my mexican neighbors are screaming at eachother right now in spanish.
Reminds me of a Facebook post of a sign that said "For Lease" with a phone number after it ("To Let" for my UK/irish friends). The number was spray painted river and written above was "navidad". Hahaha forlease navidad. Gotta love the taggers with the Christmas spirit! Who, I just heard a gunshot! They're probably just celebrating the birth of our lord, but I should take cover just the same. @ spyman and YJ. Wow perusing our footballing analogy you guys certainly believe in playing the man, rather than the ball. Just to remind you the specific ball we are talking about is AGW. To repeat I would be very interested to hear your views on that particular subject. All I have managed to ascertain to far is that you both regard yourself as part of the consensus - so that's alright then (!)

To address myself specifically to you Spyman: You are right I am almost certainly wrong on this topic. Indeed, we are all almost certainly wrong on most matters scientific - that is part of the process and I for one embrace it. Some of our current zeitgeist might indeed survive the test of time, but I defy anyone to successfully predict which these might be (back to Planck and von Jolly again). In my more spiritual moments I view the scientific method as being one of continual creation, what could be more exciting?

And to you YJ: naturally I take at face value your statement that you are PhD student. It would be unwise for you to give more personal details over the internet; you never know how much hassle this might cause you or anyone else come to that. If yours is a typical school you will have access to other subject fields. May I respectfully suggest that you attend some lectures on the philosophy and/or history of science? I think that you might find them to be quite informative. Personally I think that these should be compulsory for all science pgs, but that is my particular hobby-horse.

@spyman, two things made me skeptical, first the comment about employment prospects. Medical physics PhDs are highly employable. And second, the almost apologetic way he described why he went physics instead of engineering. That apologetic excuse making is, in my experience, almost always the other way around. People in Physics know they are the shit, and need no explanation as to why they went that route. It's the lesser fields of study, who feel the need to explain why they didn't do physics. And that explanation is usually "its too hard"
philcore (317 D(S))
20 Dec 13 UTC
Having said that, I'll say that yjs response to me calling bullshit was exactly the response I would expect from a physics student. They are rarely are so insecure that they feel the need to prove themselves. Because again, they know they are the shit.
Yellowjacket (835 D(B))
20 Dec 13 UTC
@philcore that's actually a perfectly reasonable thing to suspect. Lets just say that as graduation looms, the prospect of joining the real world weighs heavily on my mind, if that makes my statements any more sensical.
Yellowjacket (835 D(B))
20 Dec 13 UTC
@fulhamish.

I am NOT part of the consensus. I'm not qualified to be. I am a non-expert who takes the advice of experts. If and when the experts change their mind, so do I. I can't make it any more plain than that.
Draugnar (0 DX)

So you can't think for yourself and analyze data and trends? You don't have to be an expert to know that 1+1=2, not 3.
Yellowjacket (835 D(B))
20 Dec 13 UTC
No, what I'm saying is that I am not capable of peer reviewing a paper on climatology. I would not be able to objectively critique a manuscript outside of my area of expertise for flaws. I would read it (whether pro or anti-AGW) and say, "well, that sounds reasonable, OK!"

This is why I won't argue individual talking points or stats with AGW doubters, and prefer to defer to the experts. If you don't take the same approach, then I question your overinflated opinion of your abilities.
Yellowjacket (835 D(B))
20 Dec 13 UTC
And by the way, statistical analysis is really really complicated, I hope you don't think it's as simple as you're making it sound.
Draugnar (0 DX)
20 Dec 13 UTC
@YJ - I know. I *do* statistical analysis. I write software that *performs* statistical analysis. I've analyzed data for worst case wind events for engineering purposes. I understand SA. Trust me.
Yellowjacket (835 D(B))
20 Dec 13 UTC
Well that's fine, Draug. I'm forced to do stats regularly, and it's really easy to make a mistake. I would submit to you that your average layperson (who considers himself an expert, no doubt on AGW) could not define terms like "p value" or "null hypothesis," and yet they think they are qualified to "analyze data and trends," in a critical manner.
@Draug... but for sufficiently large values of "1"....1+1 does equal 3.
spyman (424 D(G))
21 Dec 13 UTC
"So you can't think for yourself and analyze data and trends? You don't have to be an expert to know that 1+1=2, not 3."

Draug are you claiming that you have conducted a statistical analysis of climate change data? Or at least some kind of deductive debunking of climate change theory?
Draugnar (0 DX)
21 Dec 13 UTC
No, but I am saying that I can read it critically without being a world renowned expert just as any entry level programmer could read the facial recognition code I am working on and understand the concepts at a basic level.
spyman (424 D(G))
21 Dec 13 UTC
(+1)
And what does your critical reading tell you? How did you arrive at your conclusion?
Draugnar (0 DX)
21 Dec 13 UTC
I arrived at no conclusion and made no claim to one. I was just telling YJ to read and think for himself and don't let the establishment tell him what to think.
spyman (424 D(G))
21 Dec 13 UTC
(+3)
The fact that AGW is mainstream science tells you that data and the theory must be consistent enough that the casting of a critical eye over the known facts is not going to be enough to justify an amateurs claim that AGW is probably false. It's not that simple. If AGW turns out to be false it will be because new facts will come to light, or (far less likely) that because the problem is so complex that the definitive analysis of the current data has not yet been achieved. The best an amateur can do is try to see if the theory seems consistent. But that amateur knows in advance that it must already be relatively consistent.

An amateur can also read what the dissenting experts think and decide who's point if view makes the most sense.

I thank you for having the courage to challenge one of my ideas. Presumably you are unaware of this article:

http://content.usatoday.com/communities/sciencefair/post/2010/06/scientists-overwhelmingly-believe-in-man-made-climate-change/1

I say that not to challenge that you have friends, even friends who work in the sciences, that disbelieve popular theories regarding global warming, but rather that I would want you to understand that these friends are idiots.

Obviously, I am open-minded to the possibility that most climatologists are incorrect about their theories, as well as open-minded to the possibility that most climatologists carry a certain amount of bias.

Nonetheless, it is a bit puzzling to me that someone would want to participate in a debate of this nature without familiarizing themselves with the body of material related to it, namely that most scientists, including Stephen Hawking, are moderately concerned about global warming.

My belief is that you would get more out of this discussion by reading rather than writing until you have better acquainted yourself with the related background material.

Please let me know if you have additional reasons to think me mistaken.

@Al,

"I say that not to challenge that you have friends, even friends who work in the sciences, that disbelieve popular theories regarding global warming, but rather that I would want you to understand that these friends are idiots."

Some of them are absolute leaders in their field. You may have low regard for the way they form opinions on matters outside their field; it matters little. You wouldn't find anywhere near 3% of professional historians claiming the holocaust didn't happen. You probably wouldn't find even 1% of 3%, maybe not 1% of that. The two are simply not comparable.

"I thank you for having the courage to challenge one of my ideas."

You're welcome, but it doesn't take as much courage as you might think.
