The Boroughs Diplomacy Tournament
I am currently organizing a F2F Diplomacy tournament in the beautiful City of Marlborough, Mass. A few years ago, the webDip F2F tournament was a great success and I encourage everyone to consider coming. Details within.

No, but everyone will call each other by their WebDip names because its just weird to use real names.

Yes, I do, right on the Northboro line. Where in Hopkinton do you work, if you don't mind me asking?

If Mapu goes and can give me a ride, I'm potentially in.

Any thoughts on when it should be? Is Spring too soon? Summer? Fall?

Sometime during summer? Maybe we can use doodle.com to decide

Here is the scoring system I'm thinking of.

Solo: 100 D
Draw: 100/n points
SC Bonus: 1 point per SC (Does not apply if game ends in solo)
Phase Bonus: 0.5 point per year (Only to help prevent tied scores)

Thoughts?
yebellz (729 D(G))
21 Mar 13 UTC
How about using 60, 120, or 420 instead of 100 so that almost all (or all, for 420) results give a whole number of points?

Also, how about making SC count and phase bonus strictly tie breakers that only factor in if the result is otherwise tied.
yebellz (729 D(G))
21 Mar 13 UTC
By the way, I plan on bringing both of my game sets: 90s edition with metal pieces and vintage edition with the wooden pieces. I'm going to work on a little project to make custom SC ownership markers for the vintage set.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
21 Mar 13 UTC
Yeah, I like using 120 (just hope for no 6-way draw).

I doubt the Phase Bonus will make any difference in score (Max 10 D, probably more like 5).

Do you think the SC bonus should just be eliminated? Should draws be counted completely evenly?
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
21 Mar 13 UTC
I kind of like the SC Bonus because it should encourage people not to draw too quickly.
yebellz (729 D(G))
21 Mar 13 UTC
Do you mean 7way draw? You could always just make that worth only 17 D instead of 120/7. Only off by 1/7, so it doesn't punish the 7way drawers too badly.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
21 Mar 13 UTC
Yeah, 7way. If we have a 7way, we'll just have to introduce decimals. I highly doubt it will happen.
yebellz (729 D(G))
21 Mar 13 UTC
Why not just impose a small 1/7 point penalty?
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
21 Mar 13 UTC
So, it seems as though the Boston Massacre will be in Philadelphia this year, so this may be the only tournament in Massachusetts.
MadMarx (36299 D(G))

Regardless of the point system, the winner of the tournament should be the person that tops the final table... A technicality, perhaps, but an important one! ;-)
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
22 Mar 13 UTC
That's actually a good point. Perhaps Day 1 should only count towards the final table and then the scores are reset?

Was just showing my wife the "local attractions" in Marlboro, Mass....hoping when I clicked through the link that she'd say, "sure...we can road trip...I go see the local attractions while you play your silly game..."

Needless to say, she was less than thrilled about spending a weekend wandering around the Wayside Inn Grist Mill....sigh....

We'll have to find another method of persuasion...

I like Marx's proposal for declaring the winner.

By the way, have you contacted Alex Amann and are you on the MA diplomacy mailing list? Those might be good channels for promoting this with the local FTF crowd.

Daylight super-saving time
So, I checked the calendar for sunrise in Holland. Latest sunrise during the year: 8:48 AM (from Christmas to New Year's this is fixed). What if we do this: all secondary schools start their first class at Sunrise+27 min until the sun rises at 7.03 AM, at which time school starts at 7:30 AM for the rest of the year until sun rises after 7.03 again.

March Madness Help Needed!
So unfortunately I live in the UK at the moment and only have a UK itunes account and this means I can't legally stream march madness, normally with sport this isn't a problem as I have no qualms with an illegal stream, but since it is free to stream normally I am struggling to find a place to watch March Madness - if anyone could tell me how to solve this horrible problem I would be very appreciative! Thanks.

Random Power Selection
I've been told by some people that power selection on this site is entirely random, and by others that it's weighted random, biased in favor of powers you have played less often. I didn't see anything in the Rules/FAQ, though I could have missed it. Anybody know the answer?

Whose territory is whose?
When negotiating the Balkans or the Netherlands/ Scandinavia, ownership has trends. This thread is to explore how players view ownership of centers in 1901 before the first move is even made. My first post will explain more.

How do you "leave" a game?
I've seen different games where it says "Left" on the player's line. I don't see where you can click that - there's a Pause / Cancel / Draw option, but no "Leave the game" option.

Can anyone tell me how this works?
