Daylight super-saving time
So, I checked the calendar for sunrise in Holland. Latest sunrise during the year: 8:48 AM (from Christmas to New Year's this is fixed). What if we do this: all secondary schools start their first class at Sunrise+27 min until the sun rises at 7.03 AM, at which time school starts at 7:30 AM for the rest of the year until sun rises after 7.03 again.

March Madness Help Needed!
So unfortunately I live in the UK at the moment and only have a UK itunes account and this means I can't legally stream march madness, normally with sport this isn't a problem as I have no qualms with an illegal stream, but since it is free to stream normally I am struggling to find a place to watch March Madness - if anyone could tell me how to solve this horrible problem I would be very appreciative! Thanks.

Random Power Selection
I've been told by some people that power selection on this site is entirely random, and by others that it's weighted random, biased in favor of powers you have played less often. I didn't see anything in the Rules/FAQ, though I could have missed it. Anybody know the answer?

Whose territory is whose?
When negotiating the Balkans or the Netherlands/ Scandinavia, ownership has trends. This thread is to explore how players view ownership of centers in 1901 before the first move is even made. My first post will explain more.
dubmdell (556 D)
21 Mar 13 UTC
When I speak of ownership in 1901, I mean more than just the home centers. We can think of France as a 5-center nation entering 1902, but he may be locked out at 4 and he may do very well and have 6, but when planning long-term, does anyone really think of Spain and Portugal as unowned? In a technical sense, yes, they're unowned, but in a more practical sense, they are French, much like Denmark will /always/ be German entering 1902 and any Turkey that doesn't secure Bulgaria must have CD'd or supported himself into Rumania after a surprise capture of the Black Sea. So when I speak of ownership, I mean it in a practical preparatory sense.

That clarification made, neutrals seem to fall along certain lines. Tunis = Italy; Bulgaria = Turkey, Rumania = Russia, Serbia = Austria; Holland and Denmark = Germany, Norway = England, Spain and Portugal = France. I would go so far as to say that these territories are owned by "divine right" considering their ownership in 90+% of games. But what about the others? Belgium, Sweden, Greece? Do these have "owners?"

Of course, there are also degrees of ownership. Rumania is Russian, but to a lesser degree than Bulgaria certainly being Turkish and Tunis certainly being Italian. Similarly, Denmark is certainly German, and to a lesser degree, Norway is certainly English (Russia could bounce him 1901). If I had to make tiers of ownership, 1 being the highest, it'd look like this:

1: Bulgaria = T, Denmark = G, Spain = F, Tunis = I, Portugal = F
2: Serbia = A, Rumania = R, Norway = E, Holland = G
?: Greece, Belgium, Sweden

We could generalize this a bit more too. Does Austria really /deserve/ to own Trieste? Many an Italy have taken Trieste to hit five centers and have then had long-lasting alliances with Austria. It isn't appreciated, but sometimes the territory is ceded to Italy. So, beyond merely thinking of neutral "ownership," we could also ask if home centers are "owned" by the respective player or if they really belong to someone else.

I'd be interesting in hearing other players' views of the board in 1901. When you go for negotiations (say as Austria), do you assume that Rumania is Russian or do you make him aware that a neutral is neutral and you'll fight him for it /in 1901/? Do you play the expansionist Italy that views someone else's home center as "divinely" your own? Opinions, please, and they'll be even more appreciated if they're on-topic and not excessively pedantic. ;)

Centers belong to whoever can take and hold them.
I'm interested as to why you put Denmark and Portugal on tier one, yet Serbia and Rumania on tier two.

But usually going into games I categorize SC's as the following. I'll tier them as you did.

1. Bulgaria - T, Rumania - R, Serbia - A, Tunis - I, Spain - F, Holland - G
2. Portugal - F, Denmark - G, Norway - E
3. Sweden - R, Greece - A, Belgium - G

Consider if we're dealing with full press or no press, too.
For example, Rumania is less likely to be Russian if there's diplomacy, in my opinion.

I do not agree about Serbia (level-1, let's say), and Norway (England can always convoy there if Russia opens North, so l-1) - just because you mentioned 1901 specifically. I suppose that any Russia could consider Norway as his property starting in 1902, but it's better not to claim it in advance...
2ndWhiteLine (2736 D(B))

Serbia is much more Austrian than Denmark is German. I've seen plenty of Germans fail to get Denmark because they get bounced by England, but I've never seen an Austrian player fail to take Serbia unless they NMR. Even Portugal is less of a guarantee for France, especially if he opens F Bre-ENG, although that's not to say that it's not a French center, it just takes an extra year to own.

The way I see things, there are really only two centers that *should* be taken by a country in F1901, those two being Bulgaria and Serbia. If Turkey doesn't have Bulgaria, it's only in a case of taking Rumania or Greece, so they will likely get it in 1902. Similarly, Serbia is a must-have for Austria in 1901. Otherwise, France can do very well with a Par-Pic, Mar-Bur, Bre-ENG opening, England hardly needs Norway in 1901, and Italy is by no means required to take Tunis, especially since it isn't going anywhere.

If we consider how each Country believes to be the right owner of a given SC, then I'd say:

1. Bulgaria - T, Serbia - A, Tunis - I, Spain - F, Portugal - F, Denmark - G, Norway - E, Holland - G
2. Rumania - R, Greece - A,
3. Sweden - ? (I don't think I'm its right owner as Germany or as Russia), Belgium - ? (in full press, probably it's more English for balance matters)

Thanks for the discussion so far. Good points being made.

@goldfinger, I consider Portugal as definitely French. I've only seen one game where Portugal went for 5+ years without an owner. I'll grant that a haymaker England can force France to forgo the center in 1901 and 1902 even, and may himself take it instead of the Frenchie, but in 90+% of games, I think it goes to France without contest. Denmark I think similarly about, although I've never seen (as 2WL says) an England bounce a German from Denmark.

@BoV, I'm not talking about long-term ownership. Certainly when we get into 1902 or 1903, we start thinking, "What can I own this year? What do I want to own next year?" But in 1901, entering negotiations and making estimations as to what we expect, I think most of us will, barring persuasive press and NMRs/CDs, expect certain centers to go to certain nations. A tier 1 center, in my opinion, are the centers which will belong to a power almost without question (key word: almost). A tier 2 center is one that I would consider to belong to a nation, but I wouldn't be surprised if I could persuade someone to prevent that ownership (or prevent it myself) while also not counting on that persuasion. A tier 3 center would be one that is completely up for grabs. So while Russia could enter 1902 and think, "I could own Norway. That's mine, bitch," it kind of misses the point. Is Russia thinking Norway is his in 1902 because Norway is still neutral, like Sweden might be, or because it is English and he has a bone to pick? I guess what I'm trying to get at is, how do we view the board in a hypothetical fashion when we sit down to a game? Sure, we have probabilities running through our heads, but surely no one sits down thinking, "How can I keep Turkey out of Bulgaria?" The only way would be to persuade him to hit Rumania or Greece and hope he didn't also go Smy-Con-Bul.

Edit: Oh, your second post is a little more how I was thinking. Ignore about half of that reply to your first post. :P

@2WL, I agree that Tunis is not required to be taken in 1901, but I do expect in most games for whoever is Italy to go for it. Hell, it'd be 1903 before Turkey could get there himself, and that's optimistic! I'd still consider it an Italian center by "divine right" even if he forgoes the option in 1901.
@dubm - I've seen France forgo Portugal many times in 1901 - due to Italy opening to Piedmont, but I guess its still french in respect to the fact that eventually a french unit will settle there in that scenario. As for Denmark, there are a handful of games where England has convoyed into Den in collusion with Russia or something. Denmark going to England certainly happens a lot more than Holland going to England in 1901
Thucydides (864 D(B))

Norway is definitively English.
Sweden is Russian - a German bounce is always seen as an act of war as far as I'm concerned.
Denmark is German.
Holland is German.
Belgium is contested.
Greece and Serbia are Austrian.
Bulgaria is Turkish.
Rumania is Russian.
Tunis is Italian.
Iberia is French.

It may not be what's fair but it's what I expect at least. If I am any one of those countries, those are the SCs I expect. If they are taken from me without a strong prior agreement I'll see it as aggression.

And thus I think only Belgium is the only truly contested neutral. Greece is second place.

Sweden really is Russian. Fuck any German who thinks he has some kind of claim. He can have it if he is ready for war, just like he can have Warsaw that way.

Hey, ThucThuc, remember this? gameID=102239. We should do this again.

And, amazingly, what I've been trying to say in too many words you hit on the proverbial head: "If I am any one of those countries, those are the SCs I expect. If they are taken from me without a strong prior agreement I'll see it as aggression." That's a much more descriptive way of saying what I was trying to say... Thank you.

@goldfinger, good point about Denmark vs. Holland. I hadn't considered how much "harder" it is for Germany to gain Denmark over Holland, the latter of which is a stronger guarantee than the former.

@Thucy again, I'm not sure I agree about Greece. I would agree that, in most games, Austria has first dibs, but if he misses out on it in 1901 (a scenario that is not unheard of by any stretch of the imagination), I think Italy has a rather strong claim. I'd say that in 1902, a still-neutral Greece has claims in order of Austria, Italy, Turkey, with the claim difference between the three being on the order of Holland vs. Denmark for Germany's ability to claim ownership (that is, a hair's difference in claim legitimacy).

CSteinhardt has perhaps unintentionally spoken to this topic in this thread: threadID=987981

"Gascony: The key to France and its natural five centers." Another vote for the notion that neutrals "belong" to someone already in 1901. I'd like to hear more from him, if he'll pop into this thread.
