This Time On Philosophy Weekly--Grouped Stars or Dividing Stripes: Nationalism vs. Global
Now, this one I DEFINITELY want, if possible, folks from other nations outside the US to contribute to, as I'd be keen to hear what someone might have to say who actually IS part of a greater-than-a-nation-union, such as the EU, but it's a pretty simple question:
Politically AND Ideologically, which is preferable--Nationalism or Globalization/Unions, and which do you believe is the "future" politically?

Babak the no show. Thought you'd at least be coming but having to leave early.

I'll post a play by play tomorrow. Flight + 3 hours of sleep = dead Zachary.

It wasn't until 3pm that I didn't regret going. Some REALLY frustrating things they do as individuals and as the group.

NOR was accepted. There was no real timer, you could take as long as you wanted. YOU READ YOUR OWN ORDERS... it just wasn't very "diplomacy convention."

All and all I still had a great time. Played Austria and ended up at 12. The Italy, Turkey, and Russia walked in together and were good friends and all worked against me (usually).

At one point Turkey told me: "If you want me to stop hitting Serbia so you can take Trieste back, you have to give me Serbia and Greece."

Are you kidding?

And when I told him no, he said, and i quote: "Well we have nothing futhur to talk about today, bye." Was an hour before he would even look at me.

All of these complaints and I still had a good time. Some good guys there even if they don't quite respect the game as much as the Boston webdippers did.
let me know the next time you play, Ill try to make it, someones going to have to give me some heads up on ftf though, im clueless

would have thought f2fers would take it more seriously than we did but maybe that was a result of us f2f noobs trying to prove ourselves

At one point the difference between me taking a center or losing one was all up to whether or not the player specified a coast. Because he read his own orders, it got really heated with me demanding to see his orders. Several of the players did not even understand why it mattered and thought he should just be allowed to say the coast right then and there. I was floored.

He didn't specify the coast btw. Giving me the center and my first chance of doing more than surviving.

@Thucy. I think its the opposite problem. WebDippers take the game much more seriously than the F2Fers I've encountered. These players go to Indy and HuskyCon. They're not "newbs." They just don't respect the delicate rules and strictness required to have a fair game because they've never been forced into those rules by a computer or judge.

Geo, i'm really bummed that I had to miss it, but I really had no choice. Family needs came before Dip wants ;) but I'll be back in DC in future weekends and will make it out... I'm so glad you did get to go and you ended up having a good time.

i'm actually quite surprised by what you encountered. for the most part, the folks in DC I've played with were very much in tune with 'official' rules... they run one of the better tournaments in the country in the fall with over 7 boards per round at last count. so I'm not sure how this came to pass. with your permission, I'd like to cut/paste your observations into an email to the DC email list and see if there is an explanation for this. I've never run into this at any of their house games.

anyways - glad you still had fun and that it worked out. great job surviving and thriving... much kudos good sir, and again apologies for not being able to show =(

Can I write something that isn't so destructive and yelling and maybe say the same things but in a constructive manner?

I was happy to go and sad to miss you. I needed to be in DC today anyway, so it worked out. And my flight was surprisingly productive and excellent. Next time though, tell your family to let you know before the day of the game! Was difficult explaining my desire to leave a day early (and spend more money) to the superior.

I do want to make sure that above all, I still had a great time and it was nice meeting new enthusiastic players. I felt bad that not everyone got to play (Another thing I can't believe. Instead of doing two CD Italy games, they played one full game and left 5 players to sit on their thumbs playing some other board game) but hopefully they let some of the other players in on the afternoon game.

Geo - go for it - write something more 'constructive' as you put it and I can post it for you on their list. if you are going to be near DC, you might want to just get on the diplist email list - its worth it.

well, the family thing was a wake. so not something that could easily be changed or planned ahead for... =/

Death with Honor
In order to promote good playing behavior, I'd like to introduce the concept of "Death with Honor", which I suggest to be included as a tie-breaker in tournaments just after the number of wins. Definition follows:

Your 2012 Presidential Pick
I know it is a little early, but I am curious. If the American presidential election were tomorrow, who would you vote for and why? You can pick Republicans who have not announced their candidacy yet. You can also pick a Democrat that you would pick over Obama.

points distribution?
I recently won gameID=61459 and I'm confused by the points distribution. Shouldn't the distribution be 20/10/1 scaled up to 135/68/7 and not 131/73/8?

Pondering the idea of writing some fan-fic for some epic games here. Does anyone have suggestions for games with lots of drama, twists, climax, etc? Would the players involved be willing to give interviews for the inside stories?

Why are there so few quality World Dip games here?
I've played hundreds of games, and on this site my win\draw ratio is quite strong, as it generally tends to be. I consider myself to be a strong player, not an expert, but quite skilled.

However, I am noticing that in the World Dip variant, the talent pool seems to be rather shallow...why is this?

PPSC vs. WTA
What are your thoughts? After a couple of couple of games under my belt I'm beginning to grow quite irritated at PPSC. It always seems to dwindle off into one less well doing player helping another better doing player to a solo for a fair share of points. More under the cut.

After the private university furore, Dawkins is in trouble again
Apparently one of our elders and betters has made a somewhat questionable analogy between a man chewing gum and the unwelcomed propositioning of a woman at an atheist conference. I am sure that this was eminantly logical but I am just struggling to see how!

I have a game that was paused, but one player hasn't returned for 3 days (he is not the one that requested the pause) and everybody else is ready to go again. How long does etiquette demand we wait? Can we even GET somebody to unpause it?
