This Time On Philosophy Weekly--Grouped Stars or Dividing Stripes: Nationalism vs. Global
Now, this one I DEFINITELY want, if possible, folks from other nations outside the US to contribute to, as I'd be keen to hear what someone might have to say who actually IS part of a greater-than-a-nation-union, such as the EU, but it's a pretty simple question:
Politically AND Ideologically, which is preferable--Nationalism or Globalization/Unions, and which do you believe is the "future" politically?

Death with Honor
In order to promote good playing behavior, I'd like to introduce the concept of "Death with Honor", which I suggest to be included as a tie-breaker in tournaments just after the number of wins. Definition follows:

Your 2012 Presidential Pick
I know it is a little early, but I am curious. If the American presidential election were tomorrow, who would you vote for and why? You can pick Republicans who have not announced their candidacy yet. You can also pick a Democrat that you would pick over Obama.

points distribution?
I recently won gameID=61459 and I'm confused by the points distribution. Shouldn't the distribution be 20/10/1 scaled up to 135/68/7 and not 131/73/8?
TheFlyingBoat (2743 D)

I believe the amount of points you get in a PPSC are SCs you hold out of total SCs

so 20/34 x 210 10/34 x 210 1/34 x 210
Draugnar (0 DX)
14 Jul 11 UTC
Except a win only gets you 18 SCs worth of points in PPSC. Doesn't matter how many you win with. This is to discourage setting up for a maximum crushing win and just win it when you can.

Draugnar is correct.
Then why do people do it anyway?
Draugnar (0 DX)
14 Jul 11 UTC
Some probably because they don't know. Others (like my recent 19 SC win) because they want to make certain they didn't overlook something and either end up still at 17 and stalemated or worse.
zultar (4180 DMod(P))
14 Jul 11 UTC
Others, like smiley, do it because they are greedy bastards...
And damn, I didn't know that you would only get 18 SCs (a little more than half of the available points). Maybe that's why I like WTA. Except I don't win...

@Draugnar -- The math doesn't work that way on jayen's game.

20/31 or 18/31 I think the CD's SC dont count.
Riphen (198 D)
14 Jul 11 UTC
its 20/31!!! Did the math.
Alderian (2425 D(S))
14 Jul 11 UTC
Also, the 3 centers in Civil Disorder don't count. So it would be:
18/29 x 210 = 130.3448275862069
10/29 x 210 = 72.41379310344828, and
1/29 x 210 = 7.241379310344828.

Those numbers are close but not quite right because rounding puts them at 130/72/7, not 131/73/8.

It seems like the single center should be worth at least 7.5 so it would round up to 8. But then wouldn't 10 centers be worth 75, not 73?

It gets funky in PPSC when folks are CD and the winner wins with more than 18. But it is PPSC so I'm not too worried about it.

20/31 * 210 = 135.4838709677419, not 131.
Draugnar (0 DX)
14 Jul 11 UTC
Yeah, I was looking at that and it is funky a bit, even when computed with 31 SCs (it's 31 total owned, alderian, not 29). Rounding occurs in odd places so a variance of 3 to 5 D is nothing, but it did give him the full 20 SC credit (or 19.33 SCs worth at least).
Riphen (198 D)
14 Jul 11 UTC
Its closer when you do count the 2 SC he gains to 20.

20/31 * 210 = 135.4838709677419
10/31 * 210 = 67.74193548387097
1/31 * 210 = 6.774193548387097

I think because the 20 SC guy is rounded down the guy with one SC gets the extra rounded point.
Alderian (2425 D(S))
14 Jul 11 UTC
31 total owned, but 29 if it doesn't count the extra two the winner had. I don't see how you get to 8 when you divide 210 by 31.
Riphen (198 D)
14 Jul 11 UTC
Oh I got them mixed up thought he was saying that he got 135 but thought it should of been 131. I read that wrong. Alderian is right.
Alderian (2425 D(S))
14 Jul 11 UTC
How do you round down from 135.48 to 131? The 20 losses 4 D, the 10 gains 6 and the 1 gains 1?
Alderian (2425 D(S))
14 Jul 11 UTC
I'm not sure about right since it is still off a bit. Unless webdip just rounds everything up so 7.000000001 becomes 8 and such.
Riphen (198 D)
14 Jul 11 UTC
No I thought he got 135/68/8. I dont know what I was reading. I made a mistake. He actually got 131/73/8 like the way you posted. Divide by 29.
Riphen (198 D)
14 Jul 11 UTC
yea that is true it adds up to 212
Draugnar (0 DX)
14 Jul 11 UTC
Last I checked, the equation counted all owned and active SCs, potentially stealing extra points. And if you take the 131 and divide by 18, you get 7.27 per SC210/24 is 7.24 which multiplies to 130.3 and rounds up to 131 (it's not a true rounding but a ceiling function). This also computes correctly for the other two with the ceiling function. So it is Points / (Total Owned SCs - Extras from the win) to get a non-rounded PPSC. Then multiple by number of SCs, limiting the winner to 18 and ceiling function the result.

The numbers work above, but accisentally dropped a couple characters there. You'll figure it out.
Draugnar (0 DX)
14 Jul 11 UTC
210/29 = 7.24 per SC
7.24*18 = 130.32 ceilinged to 131
7.24*10 = 72.4 ceilinged to 73
7.24*1 = 7.24 ceilinged to 8
Draugnar (0 DX)
14 Jul 11 UTC
210/29 = 7.24 per SC
7.24*18 = 130.32 ceilinged to 131
7.24*10 = 72.4 ceilinged to 73
7.24*1 = 7.24 ceilinged to 8

Pondering the idea of writing some fan-fic for some epic games here. Does anyone have suggestions for games with lots of drama, twists, climax, etc? Would the players involved be willing to give interviews for the inside stories?

Why are there so few quality World Dip games here?
I've played hundreds of games, and on this site my win\draw ratio is quite strong, as it generally tends to be. I consider myself to be a strong player, not an expert, but quite skilled.

However, I am noticing that in the World Dip variant, the talent pool seems to be rather shallow...why is this?

PPSC vs. WTA
What are your thoughts? After a couple of couple of games under my belt I'm beginning to grow quite irritated at PPSC. It always seems to dwindle off into one less well doing player helping another better doing player to a solo for a fair share of points. More under the cut.

Apparently one of our elders and betters has made a somewhat questionable analogy between a man chewing gum and the unwelcomed propositioning of a woman at an atheist conference. I am sure that this was eminantly logical but I am just struggling to see how!
