Would your rather have Hitler or Stalin as President of the US?
not dictator or king, just President
(hypothetically speaking, since they were not born here and so could not actually be President under the current rules, so please don't bring that up)

Getting bored
I've just wanted to open a new game, but something stopped me from doing so. I realized that Diplomacy right now... bores me too much. In this new game everything will be the same, same tactics, same guiding principles, etc. What should I do?
fiedler (1293 D)
23 Nov 10 UTC
clearly you have sucked all the marrow from life. all that's left is some spectacular form of hari-kari. make us proud.
jcbryan97 (134 D)
23 Nov 10 UTC
use different tactics, guiding principles, etc?

If everything is always the same, try something new. For instance, what do you normally do with germany? instead, try a full on early assault of austria or russia. see if you can use diplomatic skills to get france and england to support you while you take out austria.

try new guiding principles. determine for yourself that you will not lie in a game. or make no promises at all in a game.

or take a break.

and i can sympathise, currently playing only 2 games where things are just slowly turning to custard despite my best efforts. such ennui.

olidip? Lots of new maps :)
Alderian (2425 D(S))
23 Nov 10 UTC
Yeah, go to olidip.net to try some variants. A new map with different number of players can really change things up nicely. Sometimes can be hard to start up a game, but you can arrange the game here and then go play over there.

Baskineli if you want to find your interest in diplomacy again just join a game where I'm in and lose your points :)
Draugnar (0 DX)

@hellalt - I've had a bad month with several loses and only a couple of draws, so you may get to surpass me again in the GR ranks.

@baskinelli: play to win.
Baskineli (100 D(B))
23 Nov 10 UTC
@pastoralan: playing to win is so 1990's. Meanwhile I have win+draw ratio above 70%, which is quite good, IMO.
MadMarx (36299 D(G))
23 Nov 10 UTC
pastoralan is absolutely correct, when you have drawn 22 games and won 3 games, that's a pretty clear sign that your style of play is far too safe, especially when you are complaining of your boredom. Don't fixate on your win+draw ratio so much either, try to have some fun, mix it up, take some risks.
Draugnar (0 DX)
23 Nov 10 UTC
But MM, some of us have a win/draw of 2/31. And yet we do take risks. I just like to play better players who can kick my ass and am happy when I can force a draw instead of get a survive or outright defeat. But I always play to win.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
23 Nov 10 UTC
Compare your win-draw to loss-survive ratio and you'll see the difference in style
Draugnar (0 DX)
23 Nov 10 UTC
Exactly, it's not just win/draw ration. I'm at near 40% wins & draws because I'm willing to take the risk even if I get my ass handed to me on a platter.
Ges (292 D)

@Baskineli: If you're getting treachery fatigue, you might consider taking a break and doing a one-shot game of something completely cooperative like tabletop roleplaying. Perhaps you could join a table of Pathfinder, Savage Worlds, or D&D at your local game store. There are often weekend or Saturday events that allow you to dip your toe in (and play with a pregenerated character if you wish) without spending any money. All the best.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
23 Nov 10 UTC
Or Axis & Allies. No stabbing there!
MadMarx (36299 D(G))
24 Nov 10 UTC
Also, Draugnar, you do not claim to be bored, that is part of Baskineli's equation in addition to winning 3 games and drawing 22. I get bored sometimes as well, and my play is also relatively conservative (lots of draws of late compared to wins), so I'd do well to take my own advice. I am hoping to take a bit of a break this winter, absence makes the heart grow fonder, though with the big F2F event coming up in June I will want to play at least a few tune up games this spring. Avoiding boredom is different for everyone, so we're just throwing ideas out for Bask to consider, or not.

Request a MOD for game cancellation
Perhaps I do not fully understand the rules concerning when a game starts, but I was under the impression that once all players joined a game, it would start soon. However, gameID=42381 has had all 7 players for the past several hours, and as it is getting pretty late, I imagine that many players, myself included, will not be able to enter orders. Therefore, can I request that a mod cancel this game?
