Mods: Automatic Disbands
I've only played a handful of games here, but I have a minor gripe I wanted to vent. In each game I have played so far, there has been a unit that must disband because it has no option of retreat, yet the order must still be made in order for that disband to go through. Have the moderators considered a way to remove the necessity for a player to order a disband when the player has no other option?
Draugnar (0 DX)
19 Aug 10 UTC
Well, that would be up to the developers, not the moderators, and that would mean Kestas. We have had this dicussion in the past and the primary reason he keeps it is so that the player knows what happened instead of them going "Hay! Where the fuck did my unit go?!" and then proced to bitch about how they felt they were cheated and how this site "sucks" and make derogatory comments about Kestas's heritage, yadda yadda yadda.
realpauldec (690 D)
19 Aug 10 UTC
That was the argument I expected, but any decently experienced diplomacy player can look at a board and understand exactly what happened. In which case, I ask kestas to offer a more compelling reason.
Draugnar (0 DX)
19 Aug 10 UTC
Assumptions there... Not every one who plays here is decently experienced. Hell, we have people here wiht all of a couple games under their belt who don't even know this started as a board game back before the personal computer or they were born.
Draugnar (0 DX)
19 Aug 10 UTC
And Kestas doesn't have to give you a reason. It's his site. He pays for it, he does the work on it, and you should be thankful he doesn't charge you for it.
yebellz (729 D(G))

This feature gets requested all of the time. You're just adding to the noise that clutters the forums. It is on the developer ToDo list (forum.webdiplomacy.net), you know, that thing that you are reminded to check before you post feature requests on the forum. If you want to do something constructive about it, contribute to the development. Until then, keep in mind that there might be other more pressing issues that the developers are busy with and that whining about a missing feature doesn't help.

Sorry, but I'm just venting my minor gripe about forum threads like this.

By the way, the list of possible orders is generated client-side in javascript. The adjudicator running on the server does not generate the list of valid orders and is thus unaware of situations with obligatory disbands.
realpauldec (690 D)
20 Aug 10 UTC
First of all, I have only been on this site for maybe a month and was playing the board game for years before that. Second, I apologize that I didn't sift through the scores of other forum topics to find if this particular one had been highlighted or for a ToDo list that I didn't know existed and was not informed of its existence. Third, I would love to contribute to the development if I had the time or the know-how, but unfortunately I have neither. Finally, griping about forum threads being created is a waste of your time, the point of a forum is to voice concerns, ask questions, and add ideas. I apologize if each individual forum thread doesn't enrich your knowledge or contribute to what has already been said, but I think you should deal with it instead of griping about each forum thread that does not impress you.

Your initial post and question was fine which was why I answered it. But your response below:

"That was the argument I expected, but any decently experienced diplomacy player can look at a board and understand exactly what happened. In which case, I ask kestas to offer a more compelling reason."

That was just fucking rude and self-pretentious as if you thought Kestas owed you an answer.

+1 reapauldec.

You really haven't done anything wrong. It is a suggestion. Both reasons for and against make sense. I am, and I think most people are, more inclined to keeping it, for the reasons Draugnar said. But I don't think other players have the right to chastise you for voicing these ideas. You are new so I don't see how anyone should expect you to know all the stuff that they know or expect you to search through 600 pages of forum posts on the offchance that something you wanted to say has been posted before.
Miyazaki (0 DX)

Really Miyazaki? My first reply is quoted below:

"Well, that would be up to the developers, not the moderators, and that would mean Kestas. "

It's light hearted and points out the why that Kestas himself has given in the past. I was not intentionally condescending at all in it.

But then I get an "That was the argument I expected" and a "request" for a "more compelling reason" as if Kestas needs to answer that request.

And as far as you getting your nose in my business, shut the fuck up and stay the fuck out of it.

Oh, and I sue fuck a lot. inactive Marine. I was taught to cuss with the best and will use it until a mod says "fuck" is banned, at which time I will shift to calling people shiteaters and cocksuckers and asslickers, all of which describe you nicely.

I have absolutely no idea where you get off saying rubbish like that to people you don't know. Ridiculous, Draugnar. That's the last message I'll write in response to you ever in these forums.

Miya, you need to chill a bit. We've got people from all over the world with all sorts of personalities. (Not saying personalities are based on where someone is from in the world, but rather just saying we have a broad range of people here.)

Feel free to never talk with/to Draugnar again, that's your choice.
Miyazaki (0 DX)
20 Aug 10 UTC
Hi Alderian,

I'm perfectly calm. You commented that I needed to chill out but another player here had said the following comment to me: "I will shift to calling people shiteaters and cocksuckers and asslickers, all of which describe you nicely." There's no reason to communicate or discuss things with people who are going to be abusive in that way.

Seeing as you're a mod, could you tell me why you said that to me without saying anything to the other player? I don't see how being from different places makes that kind of verbal abuse acceptable. People shouldn't have to tolerate that in these forums, unless certain players here have a preferential free reign that I wasn't aware of.

Thanks for your help,
Miyazaki.
Tom Bombadil (4023 D(G))

Miyazaki, these forums are not censored by the mods. People are free to use whatever language that they want. I suggest that you take Alderian's advice and just ignore Draugnar if his language bothers you.
TheGhostmaker (1545 D)
20 Aug 10 UTC
We have a policy of not censoring the forums. Among the reasons are, firstly, the additional load on the mods would be too great to do it effectively without reducing the speed at which we catch and remove multis; secondly, there are some threads that are too boring for words to read; thirdly, it would require developer time to put in the required tools; and fourthly, would leave us all to often in a difficult situation of making a call in a very non black-and white area; meta-gaming gives us enough of those.

Regarding the initial suggestion, yes, it would be nice to have this, but on the other hand, there are lots of things that would be nice, but unless someone is going to either program it or pay kestas so that he can afford the time to do it, they can't all happen.

Hi TheGhostmaker,

My point wasn't that swearing should be censored, I understand that wouldn't be possible. My point was that I don't understand why a moderator would, on purely the issue of abuse, side with that player's comments and suggest it was I who needed to chill out when it was clearly that player who was verbally abusing me.

I love Hammer's Slammers (David Drake). When I was in college, we'd go play laser tag at the local LT arena (back when it came out in the late 80s) and my crew and I took names from the Slammers.

"I have absolutely no idea where you get off saying rubbish like that to people you don't know. Ridiculous, Draugnar. That's the last message I'll write in response to you ever in these forums."

That sounded like someone storming off in a huff. Hence the advice to chill. If I interpreted it wrong, my apologizes.

The other aspect of this is that you are relatively new here so I was trying to help you understand how these boards are run. Tom B and Ghost put it in better words than I though.

@Miyazaki. I will apologize. I was just yanking your chain with the last. Ask anyone here who knows me and they'll tell you I'm an asshat. A fun one, but still an asshat.

So, I'm sorry for calling you those three names. Don't go away angry. (just go away? :-) )
Miyazaki (0 DX)

Ok, I now understand what you meant. You did interpret wrongly though, I see no point in communicating with people who can't hold a civil discussion and I was drawing a line on this.

Can a mod please unpause and draw this game?
We've been paused for weeks and several of the players ( the ones who haven't unpaused) have clearly left the site.
But simply unpausing would be unfair as with several key players going CD it would be ruined and massively to certain players advantage.
Therefore can a moderator please draw this game?
