Well, I'm not saying that I would like to play Italy in a gunboat game. Actually, I haven't tried a gunboat with Italy yet, but I have a feeling that I might not do well with Italy in gunboat. I would probably order Ven S hold Tri and hope that Austria understands the power of an Italian-Austrian alliance. However, if Austria doesn't, I would try to work with Russia to take out Austria and Turkey. Of course, this hinges immensely on what the other players decide to do. I would hope that Russia sees Austria and Turkey as his primary threats/targets, and that France is tied up trying to resolve the Western triangle.
Maybe you should ask Centurion to expand on his opinions. He said a few posts ago that he actually thinks that Italy is amongst the easiest.
In my previous post, all that I was saying was that with Diplomacy (in general, not just gunboat), the idea of a universal "best/easiest" or "worst/hardest" country is a little bit silly. What matters is how well a player's playing style and game strategy fits that country. Also, what probably matters even more is the style and strategies of the other players and how one can read the situation and adapt one's own strategy and style appropriately.
Whenever there is a thread like this, we get people with vastly different opinions. Every power get its supporters and detractors. I think that simply saying something like "Country X is the best" or "Country X is the worst" doesn't really contribute to the conversation. However, if people discuss their reasons, and try to understand and explain how their playing style and/or strategies influence their successes or failures with a particular country, then I think we would have a very meaningful and worthwhile discussion.
