Where's the newbie section?
Someone mentioned Diplomacy to me, telling me it's a fun board game. So I googled it, found this community, and in the last 10 minutes I've been looking for the newbie section. I have no clue where to start, which games to join, etc. Where's the newbie section?

Occam's Razor and God
Occam's Razor is a theory that basically says that the least complicated option is usually the correct one. Atheists have been using this theory to state that God cannot exist, because a universe without God is simpler than a universe with God. (Continued)

Heaps Of New, Never-Before-Seen Texts Of Franz Kafka Found! (But Trapped In Court!)
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100721/ap_on_re_mi_ea/ml_israel_kafka_trial I mean WOW! One of the greatest writers of modern times...who knows what all these boxes of original texts might hold! They MUST be released! (Anyone else as excited as I am...really, it's like finding a never-before-seen play of Shakespeare's or never-heard Beatles songs or *insert great artist+never seen work here!* Think of what it could be...what MORE Kafka might have written!)

If I Were a Muslim, I'd Be Offended...And Why Can't Palin Learn When To Shut Up...
http://news.yahoo.com/s/politico/20100719/pl_politico/39899 Now don't get me wrong, a mosque built near Ground Zero in NYC is a bit odd and I have mixed feelings about the issue, but to make the connection and say Muslims, rather than terrorists perverting Islam, attacked us bordering on outright bigotry. "Peace-seeking Muslims, pls understand, Ground Zero mosque is UNNECESSARY provocation; it stabs hearts. Pls reject it in interest of healing," Nice, Palin, nice...

I've been away for about a month straight, and haven't had time to play at all, but now that I'm back, I'd like to get a game started. I'm very flexible on phase lengths and pot sizes and all that, but I'd rather it be a non-anon game. Any takers?

Opposite Argument - Make Your Case
I'd like to see people on here argue the case that is *opposite* their belief...
krellin (80 DX)
20 Jul 10 UTC
Short Example:
Socialism: Clearly the best form of government, it ensures that all citizens are provided with the necessities of life: food, housing and basic medical. Contrary to a society where an individual is left on his own to pursue his desires - which he may be ill-suited to achieve - a system in which the government directs a person towards activity that is best-suited to his ability and likewise most beneficial to society as a whole ensure the greatest benefit for all. Though individual achievement may not be recognized to the level it is in other societies, the unity of purpose amongst the population will provide a greater sense of well-being, thus creating a population that is generally more content, and thus productive. The use of force, while undesirable, is sometimes necessary to encourage a worker to perform to their ability. Contrary to a society in which the free market allows for the oppression of an individual, declining him even the ability to to work to his ability, the true crime of not performing to your ability when society requires it is where force should applied; again, this provides for the greater good.

Let's see if people can argue the opposite case -- which may take the emotion and insults out -- and truly explore an idea contrary to your belief, which can lead to greater intellectual understanding. You are on your honor to make your opposite case....but feel free to call out a cheater if you know their general beliefs from these forums! :P

“Praise to the Lord thy God, and may he mercifully inform us how to run our legislature.”

An argument for theocratic governance in the West.

A government given by God, inspired by God, and helped along on a day-to-day by God and the example of his son Jesus is quite clearly the most just and effective system of human governance known to man. Not only does such a system conclusively and absolutely justify it’s rule by the will of the almighty, but it provides the firmest possible moral grounding for all elements of State direction, and it avoids the degrading confusion and riotous nature of multiparty politics.
Given that God is the most sublime being to exist, it is quite reasonable to believe that God knows best when it comes to how we ought to set up our system. Fortunately, we have an excellent source for how God feels about any particular issue in the form of the Holy Bible. This dictates a number of principles that both Christians and non-Christians alike should agree with.
Firstly, God’s law operates on a foundation of equality before the law, something which today’s humanists claim to do, but really do not. The Bible often applies this principle to call upon those who govern to submit to the same laws that they enforce on the governed. Thus, politicians may not steal, they may not politick, unless it be in the interest of God.
The very language of “rule of law” implies something solid and unchanging. It means nothing coherent within a relativistic moral framework. Moral relativism is the ethical framework of Humanism. The rule of law historically and logically finds its best expression in the moral absolutism of Christianity. It reflects the spirit of Christian theocracy because it is fundamental to the Biblical concept of law; God’s law.
Those concerned about the threat to free speech posed by political correctness should look to the Ninth Commandment. “You shall not bear false witness against your neighbour.” In a theocracy, all truth-telling is perfectly fine, it is only slander of God that will get you killed. :)
More importantly, the Bible under a Theocracy lays out clear all of the various sins and associated punishments. The role of the officers and courts of the State is thus made exceedingly simple. Stoning for adultery is far more effective punishment than our current systems can devise!
Indeed, the Bible also exposes the fraud of today’s most cherished myth, that sexual sin is victimless behaviour and, yes, the Bible bans many sexual behaviours, declaring some offences to be criminal in nature. As a result of abandoning the lead of the Bible, western society has been subject to tens of thousands of innocent unborn babies are being murdered, hundreds and thousands of youth being emotionally scarred and diseased, including with infertility, by STDs because today’s influential adults insist on teaching amoral sex education.
Biblical theocracy is the rule of God’s law, including all the aforementioned laws that have wide support in the West beyond just Christians, laws of general equity that benefit all people, not just Christians. It is clearly and consistently superior to all other forms of government in every way.

Plus there is the added benefit of going to heaven afterwards!!!

A singular omniscient entity known as "God" exists because the canon of the bible declares it so.

How did I do?
I will probably burst out laughing while typing this, but OK:
Argument for government: There needs to be a government to keep people in line. Sure, I wouldn't murder or steal without the governmnet, but lots of others will. To keep people in line, the government must use force, which is also how they stay in power. The main thing to remember is that without government, we'd be in chaos.

Wow that was hilarious.
@Letshunt: That making a cheap shot and Christianity, not arguing the opposite case. And the reason I believe in God is not because the Bible says so, but because reason suggests that God exists.

Conservative Man: a lot of fundamentalists say God exists because the Bible says so, despite that being begging the question. Anyway, may cheap shot at atheism here if you want.

Now, if there was less government, and everything was ruled by the market then the world would work like clock-work. Why? Because the market would make everything fair and equal. Everyone starts on a level playing field, and those who work hard and have talent would rise to the top, and would lead humanity as a whole to greater heights. Corporate abuses/scandals/unethical practices would be punished by consumers not buying their products, or if the government is buying those products the people would protest against it (not that the government would buy much). Consumers will stay well informed, and know all about the practices of businesses, and corporate misinformation would be stopped due to the threat competition gives.
I can't think what else to say, I haven't had economics the entire week, so no teacher to pump me full of neoclassical theories :).

@krellin: "which may take the emotion and insults out"

I've read a good number of the threads you post in, krellin. Half the insults in those threads are from you directed towards others. A lot of the emotion, as well, emanates from you. Moreover, I've read the globals in all the games you've played. In particular, your insults in games seem to know no bounds.

Okay let me try:

Fundamentalism is an important way to view life. Because without fundamentals, you do not have a basic grounding, a standard, for how to live your life! You need to adopt a steadfast, unwavering set of principles which can guide you through your life. Compromise, though some may call it great, is just a road to disaster. Compromising your fundamental beliefs will only lead you down a path of destruction as your compromise away more and more of your values. Eventually, you'll have no beliefs left! And with nothing to believe, where would you be?
