Nice idea, but my guess is they would make more accounts if limited to one thread or delay posting if there is a forum fallow period of say a day or two.

I think that guy was from Urop. He had it in french italian Spanish and English. I mean you gotta give him some credit for trying to be as inclusive as possible

It's weird, though. For some reason the Spanish message had a different email address than the other three, despite being posted from the same account.

I suggested this a while ago, although my suggestion was that someone who has no active or finished games should not be able to post. Possibly a better suggestion though would be this, except that people could get that restriction removed by emailing the mods if they had a good reason (this would stop people like David E Cohen and Carebear being restricted from posting).

I actually implemented a feature where users who had never been in a game would be unable to post in the forum. Zultar was against it, though, so it never got pushed to the live site.

Wouldn't that just cause the forum creatures to join and ruin games as well as posting garbage on the forum?

Thats what i was thinking. Theyd spam the forum and ruin a game. And maybe also spam in the game.

I think this traffic is automated. I think long ago, we got added to the template for a forum spambot that occasionally finds us. So I think any of the above suggestions would fix the spam for some time.

Exactly, it's about tackling automated spam. I strongly doubt that spambots are gonna start ruining games.

In that case it would be pretty cool. Why do people from urop even need fake passports though? I though you didnt need a passport to travel between countries in the urop union.

Also, there's more things in life than traveling. Just because someone might not need a passport to travel doesn't mean that someone doesn't need a passport.

Also, French, Spanish and English are popular languages outside of Europe too. Only Italian might suggest that this guy is aiming at Europeans. Or he's just going with all languages he knows.

Having operated forums on large commercial websites myself in the past, there is one decent approach which works pretty well. If a user is "new" - say has no games under his belt, or fewer than a certain number of turns, then they can still post, but no messages that have a URL (ie "www") or an email address (ie. "*@*.*") in the message. Just need to add this logic and filter on each post. Spammers that cannot properly advertise do get discouraged.

It doesn't seem to happen all that often, seems to be sporadic enough that it provides more laughs than annoyance.

@brainbomb - sounds totally feasible - just need to make them 1v1 games so as not to traumatize anyone else in the process.

@Gen_Lee - I agree with you. Until the problem is more pervasive, it's probably not worth coding to address it. The sites I worked on received heavy spam attempts daily, so we had to build barriers for it.

How about a feature to sort your record based on type of game (gunboat , full press, public) and map. The profile record is now meaningless with 1v1s. Also it was already less than helpful bc of gunboats and variants mixed in.

Perhaps they can just spam the mafia games.
