Replacement player unable to join
This issue relates to the following game:
http://webdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=139971
We have had Russia being banned for multi-accounting apparently, and we were told by GameMaster to try to find another player, which was promptly done. However, the replacement player allegedly cannot find the "join" button for the game and therefore cannot join. Could we please get some guidance as to what we should do in this case?

Web based diplomacy or face to face???
I got to play f2f for the first time in 25+ years. It was quite enjoyable to have open banter with other players and fully articulate what your thoughts are, but after returning to the game so many years later and now playing on the web, with drop down menus and computer making the moves for you. I think I like the web better. I would however like to play f2f every once in awhile.

What's the community's thought?

Guys, there's too many serious threads here. We need some fun. Let's write a story.
OK, here are the rules.

One by one, we each add on to the story. You can only add one sentence at a time, and each post must be separated by at least one other post. Your sentence must be grammatically correct and within the realm of possibility. If we do well with this one, we might move on to something more outlandish. I'll post a final edit of each paragraph, time permitting, when we get enough. Have fun with it!

In a certain game there were two players who metagamed.
After telling the mods who said that they can't see anything wrong and the game was ruined and not fun,i decided to stop playing but doing ready every phase just to see if they will draw at the end, wich actually happened. It was clearly metagaming to me since no player in his right mind will draw in the situation given.
Also it was totally shown in their profile page that one of the players played 9 games in total and 7 of them with the player in question.
My previous post "this is not a cheating accusation " was silenced but the bigger player was banned for multy/meta.
I have two questions : 1- why did the mods told me they see nothing wrong.
2- why isn't the second player banned when 7 of 9 games he played were meta?

MY EMAIL:

Hello,
I cannot stand by while yet another person is silenced inappropriately for wishing to discuss a game that has finished. Again your hammer strikes on the wrong side of the rulebook - punishing real players while allowing cheating players to reign and giving them precedence in your warped logic system. As such, I find it necessary to recommend new players to avoid dealings with you as your maniachal system of moderation will destroy their playing experience. I believe that it is your moderation, rather than my sardonic responses, that endanger the reputation of the site to new players. And besides an April Fool's joke, I have never claimed to represent the site; even in my message I recommended dealing with Kestas to the new player if he has an issue with the mod team.
I daresay you are making it almost sticky-worthy to recommend new players to be very careful what they say and who to as a run-in with yourself can result in harsh consequences far more than making a wrong move in a game or entering civil disorder. It is not the first time that a silence by yourself, unexplained, is accompanied by a witty egotistical response. I will not apologise.
Yours faithfully,
Bryan

JMO EMAIL:

Taus was silenced because he was accusing 2 people of cheating on the forum after reporting them to the moderator team and being told that they were innocent. The only reason I tell you that is so that you understand that you have no idea what you are talking about. Posting as "-The webdip advice bureau" made by myself and abge feel that your posts could be confusing to new members. And considering you are giving them terrible advise that would hinder them getting help, it's unacceptable. I don't need you to apologize, but you do need to understand that it won't be tolerated. You can talk to Kestas if you have an issue with any forum silence, you can also talk to abge.

As for this nonsense,

"Again your hammer strikes on the wrong side of the rulebook - punishing real players while allowing cheating players to reign and giving them precedence in your warped logic system. "

In my time as a mod I have handled 1,522 cases. Under 100 of them are forum related. That's the most anti-cheating cases of any mod ever. So just because you can't see something happening, doesn't mean you can assume it isn't.

The two points that I don't think you understand, which is why I wrote this email are:

1) Allowing Taus to slander 2 innocent players can very negatively affect their ability to get into games, and can put them in a situation where they are unfairly slandered by other players for something they are not guilty of. This is why Kestas implemented the rule that no cheating accusations are allow. Even sarcastically posted accusations like Taus are inappropriate because they allow people to draw the same wrong conclusions that you yourself are making about those two players.

2) Telling new members to avoid certain moderators just makes our job more difficult.

I appreciate your cooperation until you get the chance to discuss the matter with Kestas.

Thanks,

jmo

ARTHUR: How do you do, good lady. I am Arthur, King of the Britons. Whose castle is that?

WOMAN: King of the who?

ARTHUR: The Britons.

WOMAN: Who are the Britons?

ARTHUR: Well, we all are. we're all Britons and I am your king.

WOMAN: I didn't know we had a king. I thought we were an autonomous collective.

DENNIS: You're fooling yourself. We're living in a dictatorship. ..... A self-perpetuating autocracy in which the working classes--

WOMAN: Oh there you go, bringing class into it again.

DENNIS: That's what it's all about if only people would--

ARTHUR: Please, please good people. I am in haste. Who lives in that castle?

WOMAN: No one lives there.

ARTHUR: Then who is your lord?

WOMAN: We don't have a lord.

ARTHUR: What?

DENNIS: I told you. We're an anarcho-syndicalist commune. We take it in turns to act as a sort of executive officer for the week.

ARTHUR: Yes.

DENNIS: But all the decisions of that officer have to be ratified at a special biweekly meeting.

ARTHUR: Yes, I see.

DENNIS: By a simple majority in the case of purely internal affairs,--

ARTHUR: Be quiet!

DENNIS: --but by a two-thirds majority in the case of more--

ARTHUR: Be quiet! I order you to be quiet!

WOMAN: Order, eh -- who does he think he is?

ARTHUR: I am your king!

WOMAN: Well, I didn't vote for you.

ARTHUR: You don't vote for kings.

WOMAN: Well, 'ow did you become king then?

ARTHUR: The Lady of the Lake, [angels sing] her arm clad in the purest shimmering samite, held aloft Excalibur from the bosom of the water signifying by Divine Providence that I, Arthur, was to carry Excalibur. [singing stops] That is why I am your king!

DENNIS: Listen -- strange women lying in ponds distributing swords is no basis for a system of government. Supreme executive power derives from a mandate from the masses, not from some farcical aquatic ceremony.

ARTHUR: Be quiet!

DENNIS: Well you can't expect to wield supreme executive power just 'cause some watery tart threw a sword at you!

ARTHUR: Shut up!

DENNIS: I mean, if I went around sayin' I was an empereror just because some moistened bink had lobbed a scimitar at me they'd put me away!

ARTHUR: Shut up! Will you shut up!

DENNIS: Ah, now we see the violence inherent in the system.

ARTHUR: Shut up!

DENNIS: Oh! Come and see the violence inherent in the system! --- HELP! HELP! I'm being repressed!

Hi Taos,

What exactly is the problem here? You asked the mods to look into a case and they ended up banning the player. Shouldn't you be happy? Sorry it took longer than you wanted. Maybe you should have just been patient instead of breaking the rules yourself.

If you shoot someone who happens to be a murdered, you're still a murderer, too. That concept shouldn't be too hard to understand.

Anyway, we aren't going to silence this, because it's a legitimateS question, even if you are being a dick about it.

For a variety of reasons, cases can take longer than you want. I don't handle cases, so I have no idea what happened here, but sometimes there isn't enough hard evidence to meet our high standards to ban someone, or maybe we were trying to tie them to a larger multi ring. I don't know.

You can always email the mods to request an update. If you don't like the verdict, you can always ask another mod to look at the case. Forming mobs on the forum against players, though, is very damaging to the community. I can explain why if it's not clear to you.

It doesn't matter that the accusation ended up being right. The rule isn't "no false accusations on the forum". The rule is "no accusations on the forum". Accurate or false accusations: neither are allowed. Again, I'm happy to discuss why that is, but your argument that there is mod abuse because people who make cheating accusations get silenced isn't going to get you anywhere.

Taos didn't make a cheating accusation.

Every time this crops up I am reminded that we have a self-moderation policy and I concede that for the benefit of all messages relating to ongoing anonymous or gunboat games should be removed but additional moderation to that I do not see a need or desire for.

Well if we're basing everything around opinions I'd say his opinion was obviously more informed in this ocassion than jmo's.

Obviously, we are more interested in fact. Who is actually a cheater. And whether a cheating accusation was made.

I admit there is implication, but you cannot read between the lines excessively either someone was accused of cheating or they were not. In this case, they were not.

Unless the rule is changed to: do not make cheating implications.

Your job is to follow the rules

Beside all what have been said it was a not cheating accusation expressed very well in the title,it was about a finished game and open for the other players involved to discuss.
I was silenced without any warning when all my intention was to discuss it with the involved players themselves.
I will remind the mods about rule number nine(my favorite): use common sense.
Common means common like in community, commonwealth, commonly, etc.
Not common thinking of a few like in this case are the mods,or to be specific one mod who was jmo who silenced me just to feed his own ego.

Different site, but I think this is the best example I have seen.
http://vdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=2139

In the Autumn of 1540 I had 2 units on Byzantiums (supply center) border, with no enemy units near by I could have taken the supply center and solo'd. This was actually the toughest decision I've ever faced in diplomacy, since it was a guaranteed solo vs a guaranteed draw.

You can tell which I chose based on the result of the game.

Too my knowledge I have never played with siemaskoIam before or since then, he was just a really good ally in that particular game and I thought he deserved to be part of the draw.

I'm not saying this to gloat or whatever because most of you probably think I'm an idiot for doing what I did. However the point of this is that some people would rather draw with an honourable ally then betray him for a cheap victory.

Why F Mur?
Sorry if this question has been answered, I couldn't find it anywhere. In the Modern Diplomacy II variant, we have a fleet in Murmansk. But in the variant rules (that we link to!!!) there's supposed to be an army in Murmansk.

Why the change? It seems to me that it just gives Russia less options when Russia is already under a lot of pressure in the first year.
