NFL Pick 'em: Week 13--Are You Ready For Some (Thanksgiving) Football?
Ah, Thanksgiving football...the last refuge of a man looking to avoid a family argument on Thanksgiving day. Truly there's no more unifying sentiment than "Shut up, eat your food, and root for the Cowboys to lose!" Come Sunday, the Chiefs and Broncos will clash, and the Saints and Seahawks go at it on Monday Night. It's a good and important week of football, so--PICK 'EM!

Everyone loves a BJ........ BORIS for President.

You have to love this guy ..... he is a throw back to everything that was, and unfortunately still is, wrong with British politics, but we love him because he is so off-message and un-PC.

Ressurecting an old 0 replies thread
How difficult would it be to make a real-time game similar to Diplomacy? Where your troops move slowly to their objectives over the course of a day or so, and with more flexibility of orders (co-ordinates rather than provinces) etc?
SYnapse (0 DX)
26 Nov 13 UTC
In other words all the armies/fleets have a zone of influence, when the zones intersect a battle occurs and they can't retreat for 1 day. Other units can join to support hold or attack. The army that loses retreats by the distance of its zone of influence. When a zone of influences falls on a supply centre uncontested that is taken.

Why would that be worth creating?

There are plenty of "real time" strategic level wargames out there. Diplomacy is abstract - trying to make it more "realistic" in some way is missing the point of the game.

There's a good reason your first thread got no replies.

*burn*

And I agree, Diplomacy is made unique in the way that it is set up at the present moment. To change it would be to change the game entirely.

Sounds like you just want to play an RTS wargame.

I suggest the Hearts of Iron series.
A_Tin_Can (2234 D)

I imagine this would be similar to Tempest Chess- see eg http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UvyJvqwlU5s
It would be impossible to make a real-time game similar to Diplomacy, as Diplomacy is a turn based game. If your objective is to make a real time game that revolves around holding supply centres in order to sustain an equal number of indestructible (or near-instantly replaceable) armies, where all armies have equal power, that is a different matter.

It would be like Diplomacy in the fact that manoevres take days rather than minutes.
SYnapse (0 DX)

Ie. it would be online, you set your armies up to move to certain places and they start going there at a slow pace. Someone can stab you by changing their moves while you're logged out, allowing for dummy movements and complex stabs.

Hellenic, imagine a web based slowed down Hearts of Iron and youre close to what I'm thinking of. Also get rid of unit stats and random dice battle mechanics
This is a game I'd like to play. True, it's not diplomacy, but it's a game I'd enjoy.

There are a few games making advantage of Google Earth/maps. It would be great if you could do this somehow.

My idea is for like 50 players playing on a world map. Zoomed in you command battles like on the scale of France having 5/6 provinces. Units would also "draw" your territory on the map with their zone of influence, so borders would be dynamic
VirtualBob (242 D)

You would need some "fog of war" aspects as well as a significant delay between when orders are issued/changed and when units begin to move toward the new objective. It would certainly be interesting, but might interfere even more than Diplomacy does with any semblance of real life outside the game.

@SYnapse: the game you're thinking of is called Battleship.

Synapse, an AMAZING free game very similar to what you said (only with an added economic side) is supremacy1914.com
Its amazing, sadly I can only play during summer as I'm too busy during the year and its time consuming.
But give supremacy1914 a try, its amazing, if you decide to try it out, and need guidance I will happily assist :)

So far tonight I made a game where you click a tank and give it orders to go somewhere and it starts moving there very slowly. I need to create a timer to show the ETA to target and collision boxes to hit the other tanks sphere of influence, a battle kind of screen where you are locked in combat, support hold and attack, a scrolling map, territories + SCs and like borders that move depending on where your armies are and should have a game going!

@ SYnapse: You have me muted and thus won't read this, but your problem is highlighted when you say "you click a tank".

It's not "a tank". - it's an entire army. The token representing an entire army looks like a tank, but it's not one tank. Diplomacy is not a tactical-level realistic wargame. Duh.

Indiana Jones and the Quest for Plot Relevance?
http://www.nationalreview.com/corner/361670/did-indy-matter-jonah-goldberg
While that's admittedly a double sin, posting something from The National Review and TBBT, I'd never thought about it that way...granted I've only seen the film a couple times, but still, huh--was Indy was mostly or completely pointless to the overall plot, or did the best worst archaeologist of all-time really come out awesome after all...at least until Kingdom of the Crystal Skull? ;)

From Draw to Solo - Part 1
Playing to draw is quite easy for most of us - but how to turn that into a solo? I've seen many people struggle with that question and I'm no exception. For this reason I thought it would be good to analyze some actual cases and get some advice from the more advanced players on the site: how to get the solo? My first case, inside, I hope others follow!

why is liberal considered a swear word in the us?
i don't consider myself liberal, but i'm wondering why liberal is almost considered as a swear word in the us - at least that's what i gathered from reading the forum ect.

i don't want to hear you rant about how dumb liberals are, i just want to understand why.

Favorite Cocktails
I love cognac and wine, but aside from those two "regular" favorites, I love to try out new cocktails...they're just so impeccably tasty AND have that wonderful effect of leaving you "happy" enough--not really a somber drinker, except for one time, but that was due to extenuating circumstances--to be sociable but not dead on your feat or a drunken mess. So, for taste and effect alike...favorite cocktails? :)

I work for a museum. Right now we're waiting for the IRS to give our institution approval to apply for a CAGE number so we can get SAM code so we can get a DUNS number so we can get a grants.gov account so we can get an account with IMLS so we can apply for a Museums for America grant. Bureaucracy sucks.

Trading places
According to the Avalon Hill Diplomacy Rulebook, units cannot trade places without the use of a convoy. Is this also true in a situation where one of the territories is bicoastal? Can a fleet in Bulgaria (west coast) move to Constantinople while a fleet in Constantinople move to Bulgaria (south coast) or would this constitute a bounce?
