NFL Pick 'em: Week 13--Are You Ready For Some (Thanksgiving) Football?
Ah, Thanksgiving football...the last refuge of a man looking to avoid a family argument on Thanksgiving day. Truly there's no more unifying sentiment than "Shut up, eat your food, and root for the Cowboys to lose!" Come Sunday, the Chiefs and Broncos will clash, and the Saints and Seahawks go at it on Monday Night. It's a good and important week of football, so--PICK 'EM!

Indiana Jones and the Quest for Plot Relevance?

While that's admittedly a double sin, posting something from The National Review and TBBT, I'd never thought about it that way...granted I've only seen the film a couple times, but still, huh--was Indy was mostly or completely pointless to the overall plot, or did the best worst archaeologist of all-time really come out awesome after all...at least until Kingdom of the Crystal Skull? ;)

From Draw to Solo - Part 1
Playing to draw is quite easy for most of us - but how to turn that into a solo? I've seen many people struggle with that question and I'm no exception. For this reason I thought it would be good to analyze some actual cases and get some advice from the more advanced players on the site: how to get the solo? My first case, inside, I hope others follow!

Favorite Cocktails
I love cognac and wine, but aside from those two "regular" favorites, I love to try out new cocktails...they're just so impeccably tasty AND have that wonderful effect of leaving you "happy" enough--not really a somber drinker, except for one time, but that was due to extenuating circumstances--to be sociable but not dead on your feat or a drunken mess. So, for taste and effect alike...favorite cocktails? :)

I would recommend Pedialyte. Hangovers are partially caused by the dehydrating effect of alcohol. Pedialyte replaces lost electrolytes.

I don't drink (and I never have) so I'm speaking from secondhand experience, but I've witnessed some legendary rallies with a bottle of Pedialyte.
Mapu (362 D)

And since Bo Sox is still young enough to take Children's Advil, Pedialyte is a sound choice.

Drink 4 glasses of water for every ounce of alchohol in your body. You'll be pissing every 20 minutes after waking up, but at least you wont have a headache.
Gunfighter06 (224 D)
25 Nov 13 UTC
Hey, you don't have to be a sick kid to take Pedialyte. Seriously, Pedialyte works wonders. I personally witnessed a buddy of mine go from blackout to no-hangover sober in 4 hours.
Gunfighter06 (224 D)
25 Nov 13 UTC
Also bosox, drink one glass of water per alcoholic beverage while you're drinking. It's not a foolproof cure but it takes the bite out of a hangover.
2ndWhiteLine (2736 D(B))
25 Nov 13 UTC
You don't necessarily have to walk around with a bottle of Pedialyte, but have a few glasses of water over the course of a night. Also, don't drink on an empty stomach. Eating something at the end of the night always helps too.

Gunfighter, I know you mean well, but if I'm drinking I'm not in the "let's do the smart thing" mode... I'll see if we have any of that sitting around at home though.

If not I'll go buy some I guess o_O`
Invictus (240 D)
25 Nov 13 UTC
Don't worry, bo_sox48. Your ol' pal Invictus is here to help.

1. Drink a a full bottle of water right before you go to sleep. This often comes close to preventing the hangover altogether.
2. Drink as much water, ginger ale, or Gatorade as you can stand in the morning if you do end up being hungover.
3. Hair of the dog does work. Have a bloody mary.
4. Eat a BLT. Scientifically proven to be the best hangover food.

Generally, clear liquors give milder hangovers than dark ones. Keep that in mind.

And now the obligatory caution not to drink in high school. High risk, low reward. Ultimately up to you though.

Probably the case. But hey, if I had ever gotten to have a three day sleepover with drinking and girls in high school I'd tell everyone about it too.
krellin (80 DX)
25 Nov 13 UTC
It reminds me exactly of said girls whom, after 2 drinks, start stumbling around and announcing to all, "I'm sooooooo drunk..."

The stories they tell the next day (of supposed 3-day sleepover with boys and girls) are highly exaggerated, and far less interesting than you are supposed to believe...

That may well be true. I certainly wouldn't be impressed in absolute terms, veteran of probably scores of college parties that I am.

I just mean that it's understandable he'd make a big deal of this, and there's no reason to fault him for that.

Don't do the Pedialyte while drinking. It's a morning-after solution, not a during-drinking thing. It won't prevent a hangover but it will shorten it drastically.
Invictus (240 D)
25 Nov 13 UTC
Don't do Pedialyte at all. The cure's worse than the disease.

Prevention is the best cure.... when you're drinking, chug a glass of water between alcoholic beverages. Before you go to bed, eat a couple slices of bread and drink as much water as you can.
krellin (80 DX)
25 Nov 13 UTC
As the former king of alcohoic WebDip players, YJ seems to know his crap...drink - water - drink -water - water before bed ...largely soothes the savage beast. (three aspirin ztat bed, too...just to make sure your eventual bleeding ulcer is a doosy!)
Invictus (240 D)
25 Nov 13 UTC
(+1)
If you're in the state of mind to alternate between booze and water you're not on the road to a hangover anyhow.

The one big water chug before bed, however, is always a good idea if you can remember to do it. Not a bad thing to do even if you're not drinking, since all that water turns into a fool-proof biological alarm clock.
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))
25 Nov 13 UTC
@dirge ... first for me too.

@YJ ... easier said than done in someone else's basement at 2 AM and... well, you probably can figure out the rest of the story. Pretty much reiterating what Invictus said above.

@abge ... I don't have the ID. Whoever made the game hasn't sent it to me.
Yellowjacket (835 D(B))
26 Nov 13 UTC
invictus/bo that's a load of crap. I've avoided a lot of hangovers using that.

It's easy to plan out your drunk. You know, do smart shit like plan not to drive and just tell yourself you're gonna drink water too. Establish a pattern and drunk-brain will follow it.

I fail to see what about being in a basement makes it difficult to get a glass of water.

---

On a side note, does anybody else occasionally have drunk-brain play tricks on sober-brain? Like, "ahahhaaa, just wait till that asshole wakes up tomorrow morning and sees what I left on the kitchen floor, ahahhahhaa!"
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))
26 Nov 13 UTC
Whatever, headaches are gone o_O

And no, I think that's only you :D
Invictus (240 D)
26 Nov 13 UTC
It is, I agree, easy to plan out your drunk. Obviously priority 1, if not priority 0, is figuring out who will do the driving, if anyone. The water spacing thing, however, is a hard thing to keep to. Who's really drinking a glass of water after each beer? I've never seen it.

It can't be bad, obviously. It's just so hard to do, and so jarring socially, that it's not very realistic.
Yellowjacket (835 D(B))
26 Nov 13 UTC
Invictus, the water spacing is really easy and I do it as soon as I start feeling buzzed. If it's jarring socially, then I would suggest that your friend are assholes :)

Don't worry about killing brain cells. Think of it like thinning the heard. The alcohol only gets the slow ones, so you'll actually be smarter.

Of course as you get older, the heard is only made up of the fastest and strongest (if you've done a good job thinning), so then you start killing the good ones ... I killed a few of the fast ones watching the broncos game last night ... Fuck #32. Who put him on special teams?
philcore (317 D(S))

Hey Bosox, if you were on a 3 day bender with a bunch of drink 17 year olds, why the fuck did you take so much time out of that party to post fairly lucid and well thought out responses to the Israel thread?

26 Nov 13 UTC
I got back home yesterday morning. I took a bunch of shit in the morning and felt fine but once it wore off I was spinning like Crush in the EAC.

I'm gonna put that in a song someday.
The best cure for a hangover is to stay drunk. So long as you keep drinking you'll never feel the consequences...

Ddtoxicshock: bad advice! Someone gave me that advice when I was seventeen and I've been drunk ever since!
ulytau (541 D)
28 Nov 13 UTC
Water spacing is actually really easy. Once you break the seal, you will be a regular in the restroom anyways so unless the tap water there is undrinkable, you can help yourself with every visit. Not to mention that the only reasonable use for a glass of water at a party is pouring it over someone else, prefferably a voluptuous female.

According to the Avalon Hill Diplomacy Rulebook, units cannot trade places without the use of a convoy. Is this also true in a situation where one of the territories is bicoastal?
