Caricatures - Public Press game
This was one that we did a while back and I thought it was fun. A public press game where everyone assumes a stereotypical accent.

ie Austria-Hungary types like John Cleese in the phrase book skit "EYE vill nut boiy dis record, it is skretched".

Speak if you guys want. I know my first comment is: I have no idea how the hell I made this happen by pissing off all 3 of my initial enemies. This is a perfect example of how you CAN make something happen without allies...lol

LA Times, BBC News, and other outlets reporting Egypt's parliament has been dissolved by their high court while keeping a Mubarak supporter on the ballot for the Presidential Election. Thoughts?

First of all, when there's a game that takes more than five hours to finish and nobody bothers to write an EoG, you know that something stinks. I'll now explain where the smell comes from.

In the first phase, it was an entertaining game. England (yours truly) went off to a good start with France (SplitDiplomat) and crushed Germany. Italy decided to attack France, which left Austria with nice chances of growing, since Russia and Turkey couldn't make up their mind whether to attack each other or not.

Germany was overrun and Italy died in a French-Austrian sandwich. France was emerging as the solo candidate, so I turned my armies against him. Turkey, which was about to eat Austria from behind, went CD in 1908.

Russia and Austria realized the danger and started working with me against France. At that stage, I knew France was SplitDiplomat because he's the only player on the site who never draws. Still, we had some significant gains and it looked like we'd force him into a four-way draw after all, but then everything fell apart.

In 1911, Bohonk took over Turkey (I wish I knew the name of the jerk who left) and continued the slaughter of Austria, who had been fully concentrated on stopping France. Entering so late into a game that adapted to the CD and disrupting everything... damn. Bohonk, you're either a lowlife or a noob or both.

Then Russia (Sargmacher) built a fleet in StP and took Norway from me. I always thought Sargmacher was a jerk and this move confirmed this once and for all. My God, what a bozo. He blew any remaining chances of a draw.

Did I mention that the game was extremely slow? If I remember right, every turn after 1901 lasted full five minutes. It was usually SplitDiplomat who failed to press "Ready". War of attrition, obviously, and I finally succumbed. In 1913, getting close to the sixth hour of play and unable to keep my eyes open, I disgustedly turned off my PC and went to sleep. That way, I managed to get my second resign on the site, even though the game finished 15 minutes later! Talk about bad luck.

I forgot to mention Germany (Bob Genghiskhan). Based on his forum posts, Bob Genghiskhan always looked jerkish to me. Well, now that I've played with him, I can confirm he is a jerk.

He let France (SplitDiplomat) walk all over him, and then, when he's lost everything, he plays lackey to him, helping him move to Denmark in hope that SplitDiplomat will leave Munich alone as a reward for his loyal ass-licking.

Of course, SplitDiplomat promptly took Munich next spring, but our boy Bob took London from me just for the kicks. "Hey, if I must lose, let everyone else lose with me!" For me, that kind of move is the king of the dick moves (threadID=885813). I dispatched Bob Genghiskhan with glee, but damage was already done. What a loser.

Zmaj: don't play games under 1400 D pot, help a lot to avoid lot of these. Of course it's not guarantee, but substantially reduces the number of bad players. You can afford it, I suggest move on, and let these below 700 D games be the playground of those who don't want to improve and play far better games.

Rokakoma, thanks for the advice. You're right, I should have moved to the big pot games already. This was just a waste of time.
Yawn.

Can I recommend that the next time you write an EoG, you actually have played until the end of the game?

Especially when the reason there was no draw was your inability to form a line? Sargmacher played that entirely correctly. Once you turned a draw into a likely loss in 1910, his best chance was to get the alliance a competent northern fleet. I would have played it the same way.

I find some serious irony in Zmaj moaning about a game going on too long! It was only 1 month ago that vaftrudner and others (including me) were moaning about your play! http://webdiplomacy.net/forum.php?viewthread=872573#872573

taking a win in 1923 when England had CD early and all had set a draw and then you took his centres and then doing the same when 10 centre Russia went CD. The worst of this deplorable play was that it took you 10 game years to take a win against unsupported armies!

This remains the only ever game I have left and only because you made it so long (5 hours) and I couldn't alter the result in any way.

How can you moan at someone else with your record of inconsiderate and slow play, not to mention extremely unsporting and downright greedy!

Ive tried this in a recent gunboat game, and it actually ended up working out fairly well. Is pretending to CD a valid strategy?

Apples and oranges
I've seen a number of discussions on the forums recently comparing two positions or ideas that are too different to reach a valid conclusion about which is better. Since invalid comparisons are in vogue right now, I thought we might discuss the classic: apples vs oranges. Go!

For debate: When is a gunboat not really a gunboat?
Hey gang: I accidentally clicked onto a gunboat game and now have no real way of backing out. Others are not really being acquiescent about a Cancel, so it looks like I'm (more or less) stuck. So instead, I'm setting up this thread as a potential discussion spot for gameID=91706. If players are talking here, is it still gunboat?
