Top-100 GR "World Map" Challange Game
I have not played a GOOD world game in a long time. I wonder if it is possible to have 17 out of the top 100 GR players join such a game. It would be quite a feat. This can be anon or non-anon and it should be 36 or 48 hours. WTA only. Indicate your interest inside (please post only if your Oct GR rating is 1 to 100)

The culture of canceling games
I think games get cancelled too readily on this site. Iif someone NMRs in the first year then by all means it is easier to start again. But a few years into the game I think you should just play it out. So what if someone else gets lucky because of a fortunate NMR or CD. It's only a game. And it is such a big investment of time and effort to call it quits with no result.

Anyone Use Ubuntu or other Linux OSs?
Thinking of trying it to save 100$. Want to know if you can game on it well with windows games.
damian (675 D)
15 Dec 11 UTC
With windows games. Nope. But you probably already know that.

If you're curious, thought and don't mind doing a bit of tinkering to get things up and running. Wine can run most games. http://appdb.winehq.org/ Anything on the platinum or gold list should be fine.

Diplomat33 (243 D(B))
15 Dec 11 UTC

wine is fine but I don't like to muddle around with the scripting just like to play when gaming.
damian (675 D)
15 Dec 11 UTC
So what are you asking then. To play windows games without Wine?

Sigh.

Should have known...nonsense troll post.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
15 Dec 11 UTC
Oh, so the tides have turned, I see!

Honestly Linux is not great for Windows gaming.

Dosbox is great for older games.

Wine will work for older games and some newer ones as well. It's really hit or miss.

If you want to play new games like CoD, Skyrim, SCII, etc, you're going to have to do a lot of serious work to get them to play (and they still might not).

As I've said before, one of the biggest reasons I still use windows is because I'm a PC gamer.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
15 Dec 11 UTC
A Virtual Machine is always an option, but I don't see the point, because you still need a Windows license and it's a real waste of resources.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))

@D33

Do you have any relatives in College? Most colleges give out Windows 7 licenses to students.

I got 9 from my University.
fortknox (2059 D)

I'm a heavy ubuntu user... some things work, some don't.

Honestly, I forced myself to do my gaming on an xbox instead of windows and I haven't regretted the decision. I'm not win free (except one work laptop), and couldn't be happier.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))

@FK

Do you have Ubuntu on any laptops. A few weeks ago, I put it on my laptop and have been very happy, but I occasionally have overheating issues because CPU scaling doesn't quite work. Because of that, I've been sticking to Win7 so I don't damage my laptop. It's a shame because I use Ubuntu on my lab computer and really like it.

I still have a gaming PC. I just can't get away from the keyboard and mouse. It offers so much more control and flexibility over a controller. Plus, I'm addicted to LoL, which isn't for consoles or Linux.

I just wondered if it could be done. Guess I'll just but W7 like I wanted to. Just a little money conscience.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
15 Dec 11 UTC
Based on some of the nonsense HW you've said you wanted to buy, I wouldn't call you "money conscience".
Diplomat33 (243 D(B))
15 Dec 11 UTC
Nonsense! W7 is the greatest OS on earth! Wish I could afford Ultimate!
fortknox (2059 D)

All my ubuntu boxes as ubuntu, abge. I'm unfamiliar with the issues you are having. Have you done heavy googling on it?
fortknox (2059 D)
16 Dec 11 UTC
Ugh... All my laptops are ubuntu... That's what I meant to say. Sorry.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
16 Dec 11 UTC
Interesting.

What versions are they running?

Yes, I've googled a bunch and tried a number of things. I'm careful how what I do, since I'm making HW changes.
ghug (5068 D(B))

I dual boot Mint, but the wifi card in my laptop is a piece of shit, and I haven't had the time to replace it yet, so I don't use it as much as I would like to. Diplomat, go ahead and get Windows and then install something on a small partition and just play around with it a little, you'll be amazed by the visual, speed, and functionality increases.

If you're a student, or know a student, or teacher, you can probably get a cheaper copy of Windows.

I really like UNIX, I maintain three BSD servers (this server, a home gateway, and a business domain controller), and I used to use Ubuntu on the desktop while in uni, however I have to say that UNIX just isn't as good value as Windows on the desktop.
The only way $100 for Windows on the desktop isn't worth it is if your time is worth next to nothing, because it will take you a lot longer and much more grief to get a desktop system you'll be happy with using UNIX (and although I love the simplicity of UNIX systems, Windows 7 is also a really excellent OS)
Geofram (130 D(B))

Not a fan of Linux, any flavour, even though I use it every day. Also, I am such a student that can help with Windows 7 on the cheap.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
16 Dec 11 UTC
Yeah, I got so many free copies of Win7 from my uni it's ridiculous.
zultar (4180 DMod(P))

Can I have one of those free copies, abge?

The deal with linux is that it takes weeks to set it up just like you like it, but once it is... And you really set it up well... It just makes life beautiful.
I'd tell everyone to put guake and gnome-do as first time ubuntu apps, and you'll be in heaven.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
16 Dec 11 UTC
Well, i wouldn't say *weeks*

I had my laptop set up really nice in about 2 hours. Except, you know, it catches on fire.
ghug (5068 D(B))
16 Dec 11 UTC
Hey, some manufacturers (read: apple) consider that a quality feature.
fortknox (2059 D)
16 Dec 11 UTC
It takes me several hours to get it setup to my liking, then tweaking for the next few weeks when I see something I want to change (especially things like conky)
orathaic (1009 D(B))
16 Dec 11 UTC
yes, i like ubunutu, use on most of my machines.

compared with windows, i find it much easier to figure out how to tweak things - friendly community to answer questions.

While it may take me hours to set things up they way i want them, it would take me longer on windows, mainly because i can't find the help needed to do it...
fortknox (2059 D)
