"Foolish...Voting For Liberals. It's What Kids Do." The GOP Targets Students
http://news.yahoo.com/s/yblog_theticket/20110308/ts_yblog_theticket/ahead-of-the-2012-campaign-states-debate-voting-rights

So to expel their image of being stuffy old white males in flanel suits, the genius GOP has decided to try and eliminate same-day voter registration and voting and limit college voters in other ways...nice...

More judge-like game settings?
I really like the web-based driven Diplomacy game play but are no fan of the handling of deadlines and the high occurrence of no ordering and civil disorders. Has anyone attempted to bring a more judge-like approach to game settings, deadlines and grace periods to this project? Anything up and running out there or does anyone having work in progress? I'd rather join forces if anyone is working on it than starting on duplicate work,

Designing my final syllabus
So I'm in the process of designing my last syllabus before they cut off my funding, and I wanted to do something different this time. What cases do you think would most interest 18-20 year olds?

I teach an introductory course on comparative politics. My course tends to "stick to the book", so to speak. I use a widely used CP textbook and don't deviate too much from what you'd usually find in an intro CP course. I was thinking of scrapping the textbook and just focusing on countries that interest me. The usual cases I go over are: US, UK, Germany (for the democracies), China and Iran (authoritarian systems), and I rotate between Russia, Mexico, and Brazil for transitional countries.

I want to do a unit on Canadian politics, but frankly I can't find good summary articles on the Canadian political system that the class could read.

I think you should compare the political structures of the Zerg, Terran, and Protoss empires. Such a class would be of great interest to 20 year olds.

What I've learned from SC:

Supply Depots are better defensive structures than Bunkers
Just because a building can fly, doesn't mean it can escape from an attack
More carriers makes it harder to defend against Scourge, not easier
Sometimes, it's OK to nuke your own base

Putin: As an International Relations MA I'm interested in what you might put in your course. Before I answer, however, can you define what "comparative politics" means in the context of your course?

I ask this question because people in the USA often seem to use the term "comparative politics" to mean "studying the politics of foreign states" in general, whether or not the comparative method is being used.

"Supply Depots are better defensive structures than Bunkers"

Oh, yes. So much better.

Last night abge, I finished getting the last campaign achievement. I have them all. And I got them all on Brutal. With the exception of the "Finish the SCII campaign in less than 8 hours."

Modern Canadian politics are fairly boring. The Conservative party is Center-Right, the Liberal Party is Center-Left and the NDP and Greens and Block Quebecois are farther to the Left. So the Conservatives get a minority government with 36% of the vote.

Previously when the Reform was Right, Conservative Center-Right, Liberal Center, NDP and Block Left, the Liberals would get a Majority government with 40% of the vote.

Even the conservative party will not touch Health care, CPP or EI. We had the conservative government block the foreign acquisition of Potash Corp. So even the conservative side of Canadian politics is not 'Conservative' by US standards.
Our Conservatives would be considered Liberals were they in the U.S.

South Africa, Turkey & Poland would probably be of some interest. Just think how 18-20 year olds can see fairly dramatic changes over the course of their lifetimes.

Also, Israel's poltics would probably appeal to both the left & right wing crowd.

When are you going to be teaching this class? A semi-live following of Tunisia, Egypt, Libya could be very interesting.
Putin33 (111 D)

Oh we've been talking about the Arab uprisings in class throughout. But I haven't done multiple in depth lectures about their political systems, although we did discuss several articles about it. The class begins March 28. My previous class just ended Wednesday. I still have a final to give and papers to grade though.

@ Jamiet

"I ask this question because people in the USA often seem to use the term "comparative politics" to mean "studying the politics of foreign states" in general, whether or not the comparative method is being used."

Comparative politics in this context means studying and comparing the domestic politics of various countries - including the US (which is one of the cases I go over). We do discuss the comparative method, but it's not necessarily essential for comparative politics in this context. Other methods are also used.

That's an odd system? How do your semesters work?
Putin33 (111 D)

I could do a unit on the EU, which is technically an international organization, but acts like a sovereign state in many ways. Plus, there is no IR class that talks about the inner workings of the EU. That might be dry though.

We're on quarters. 10 week classes. We're moving to semesters soon though.

Oh, I thought there were bigger breaks between quarters. If you haven't given out exams, that's like 1 week in between quarters...

Yep. We have longer breaks between summer quarter & fall, and between fall & winter.

I agree with JetJaguar that you should consider studying South Africa as one of the case studies. It's a fascinating country politically, both historically and today.

Putin teaches poli-sci. That explains a lot. :-)

But seriously, where do you teach? OSU? How long have you been there? My niece was a poli-sci major and went on to DC. She is at Georgetown I think working on her masters now after spending some time in the diplomatic corps travelling the world with some senator or other and setting up conferences and stuff.
Putin33 (111 D)
11 Mar 11 UTC
Yes OSU. I thought we just had a long argument about student IDs and Columbus? I've been here a little over 5 years, although I took a two quarter break in the middle of it.
Putin, I'm taking a class on Turkey right now, and I have to say Turkish politics in the last decade are very very interesting.

I was just confirming on the OSU. But I guess my niece graduated just about when you came on board. She did the early graduation before the big one that year (2006).

I have been playing webdip here for almost a year, and I had finished 48 games not being able to win any of them. Then in the last hour I won not 1 but 2 games. gameID=47420 and gameID=51611. I think I finally found a strategy that works for me.

FTF game in Melbourne
It has come to my attention that there are a few people here who are from Melbourne, Australia. Anyway, being completely and utterly free this Labor Day weekend (read: no one wants to hang out with me), I would like it if people wanted to meet up and play a game of Diplomacy. I know that it is a little late, so if a later date was organised, I'm fine with that.

8.9 earthquake off the coast of Japan, tsunamis, aftershocks
CNN livestream: http://www.justin.tv/live_news#/w/948725776/18
I know, CNN sucks, but this is the best stream I've found so far.
Al Jazeera's livestream has it too: http://english.aljazeera.net/watch_now/
If you know anyone in Japan, or anywhere on the Pacific coast in Asia you might want to give them a call and let them know. Tsunamis are still moving and there may be more aftershocks in the region.

forced draw conditions?
Say you have a (purely hypothetical, of course) situation where 2 countries are holding a stalemate line against a 3rd in a gunboat game, and the 3rd country is refusing to draw.

Is there some number of moves with no change to the line after which the mods will force a draw?

Soros v LCTM, or how I learned to love the quants...
So I've been reading Niall Ferguson and his view on George Soros when LCTM begged for a bail out and it got me thinking, if the worlds decisions can be divided into gut or analysis, what kind of diplomacy player am I?

I'm interested to know if players on webdip would evaluate their styles as a gut player or an analytical player?

When I joined, I was pure. I would not let GR nor points rating deter me from joining a game that looked interesting, for whatever reason. ...But now I find the ratings to be one factor in my considerations. I'm sliding down the slippery slope to letting GR rule me!!!!!! But I digress...

Voting Pause.
I am not currently in a game awaiting players to pause, nor am I complaining about a past game. This just struck me as somewhat impractical. A Pause vote, in my opinion should be a majority vote. I'm sure countless situations have occured where a small number of players refuse to vote pause when a legitimate reason is given. Pausing, as far as I'm aware, does not affect the outcome of the game.
