"Foolish...Voting For Liberals. It's What Kids Do." The GOP Targets Students
http://news.yahoo.com/s/yblog_theticket/20110308/ts_yblog_theticket/ahead-of-the-2012-campaign-states-debate-voting-rights

So to expel their image of being stuffy old white males in flanel suits, the genius GOP has decided to try and eliminate same-day voter registration and voting and limit college voters in other ways...nice...

More judge-like game settings?
I really like the web-based driven Diplomacy game play but are no fan of the handling of deadlines and the high occurrence of no ordering and civil disorders. Has anyone attempted to bring a more judge-like approach to game settings, deadlines and grace periods to this project? Anything up and running out there or does anyone having work in progress? I'd rather join forces if anyone is working on it than starting on duplicate work,

I finally won 2 games !!!
I have been playing webdip here for almost a year, and I had finished 48 games not being able to win any of them. Then in the last hour I won not 1 but 2 games. gameID=47420 and gameID=51611. I think I finally found a strategy that works for me.

FTF game in Melbourne
It has come to my attention that there are a few people here who are from Melbourne, Australia. Anyway, being completely and utterly free this Labor Day weekend (read: no one wants to hang out with me), I would like it if people wanted to meet up and play a game of Diplomacy. I know that it is a little late, so if a later date was organised, I'm fine with that.

8.9 earthquake off the coast of Japan, tsunamis, aftershocks
CNN livestream: http://www.justin.tv/live_news#/w/948725776/18
I know, CNN sucks, but this is the best stream I've found so far.
Al Jazeera's livestream has it too: http://english.aljazeera.net/watch_now/
If you know anyone in Japan, or anywhere on the Pacific coast in Asia you might want to give them a call and let them know. Tsunamis are still moving and there may be more aftershocks in the region.

forced draw conditions?
Say you have a (purely hypothetical, of course) situation where 2 countries are holding a stalemate line against a 3rd in a gunboat game, and the 3rd country is refusing to draw.

Is there some number of moves with no change to the line after which the mods will force a draw?

Soros v LCTM, or how I learned to love the quants...
So I've been reading Niall Ferguson and his view on George Soros when LCTM begged for a bail out and it got me thinking, if the worlds decisions can be divided into gut or analysis, what kind of diplomacy player am I?

I'm interested to know if players on webdip would evaluate their styles as a gut player or an analytical player?

Tips on Ghost Rating..
When I joined, I was pure. I would not let GR nor points rating deter me from joining a game that looked interesting, for whatever reason. ...But now I find the ratings to be one factor in my considerations. I'm sliding down the slippery slope to letting GR rule me!!!!!! But I digress...

Voting Pause.
I am not currently in a game awaiting players to pause, nor am I complaining about a past game. This just struck me as somewhat impractical. A Pause vote, in my opinion should be a majority vote. I'm sure countless situations have occured where a small number of players refuse to vote pause when a legitimate reason is given. Pausing, as far as I'm aware, does not affect the outcome of the game.
maltizok (787 D)

thats true but consider this, you and 2 other players have formed a stalemate line that nobody can pass in a live game. the other 2 players decide they want a 2 way draw instead of 3 way draw and both vote pause so the game stops. eventually they unpause it after you have been offline for a decent amount of time, it makes you CD and they voted draw....how would that be fair?
well, he isn't saying an unpause shouldn't be unanimous.
The Situation (100 D)
10 Mar 11 UTC
Pausing would be majority vote, but unpausing would be full vote. Of course mods would retain ability to pause/unpause if required.
maltizok (787 D)
10 Mar 11 UTC
yeah i suppose that wouldnt be a bad idea, especially because i was going to say something about if a player would be close to defeat and the game gets paused they could just refuse to unpause and try and get the game canceld but the mods having the ability to unpause/pause games solves that problem. i would be in favor of a majority vote for pauses
Draugnar (0 DX)
10 Mar 11 UTC
Pausing could be used to get more time to negotiate. And considering that refusing to unpause is considered metagaming, it would be very unfair to allow majority rules on a pause and not on an unpause. Yet, as has been pointed out, majority rule on an unpause is frought with abuse potential..
The Situation (100 D)
10 Mar 11 UTC
Pausing can still be used for more time for negotiations. It is only more difficult right now. I don't quite see how unpausing would be considered metagaming.
maltizok (787 D)
10 Mar 11 UTC
maybe it would be better to have 2 pause options, one that remains as it is now and a 2nd one that is majority vote but if that one is used there can be no messages sent between players in game or through PM to players in that game until it is unpaused again
The Situation (100 D)
10 Mar 11 UTC
Now that you brougt it up, why do we have chat during pause? We could perhaps view messages (if mods post for some odd reason), but I don't really see a reason for chat during pause.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))

@Situation

Because there's no way to keep people from communicating outside the game.

@OP

I think majority pause is something worth considering, but it seems to me that unanimous unpausing is necessary.
Draugnar (0 DX)
10 Mar 11 UTC
Well, having the chat allows the primary player for whom the pause was instantiated to tell people when he returned.

As far as unpausiong and metagaming. It has happened in the past that a draw was forced by players refusing to unpause. I know cause I'm one of the guilty parties where we forced the third nation to draw as he wanted the game to end and we refused to unpause. He wanted the pause so we used it against him. After that incicdent, the mods declared it against the rules and metagaming should it ever happen again.

10 Mar 11 UTC
The mods will only intervene if someone tries to use unpausing as a diplomatic tool. If, let's say, someone asks for a 3 day pause before the first phase, but doesn't return for a week, a player could ask to cancel the game. Right, Draugnar :)
The Situation (100 D)
10 Mar 11 UTC
@abgemacht
Perhaps, but then we run into the same problem with non-anonymous gunboats.

@Draugnar
Perhaps, but then you could attempt to employ a mod to unpause it.

@Situation

Yes, but just because there's a problem doesn't mean you need to make it worse.
The Situation (100 D)
10 Mar 11 UTC
@abgemacht
Removing chat from the game during a pause wouldn't really worsen a problem. Anyhow, it was just a side suggestion vaguely related to the thread topic.
trip (696 D(B))
10 Mar 11 UTC
I do wonder how one person refusing to unpause can be meta-gaming.
trip (696 D(B))
10 Mar 11 UTC
@TS: if the game was anon and the player who asked to pause didn't come back, how would the other players be able to communicate, or know who to communicate with.
Draugnar (0 DX)
10 Mar 11 UTC
@trip - metagaming is using anything ourside the game for a strategic advantage. Pasues aren't part of the game and the mods have declared unpausing to not be part of the game. Therefore refusing to unpause *is* outside the game. Metagaming does not require collusion between multiple players.
