CGS games?
So, I was looking for a game to join, when I spotted this. Spot them every now and again. What are they? And what does CGS stand for?

Thanks for the game guys - was just saying in the other thread - this is my first live gunboat (FtF not counted :)

I was very brutal... sorry about that.

thanks!!! :)
Good game all around.
Sorry Italy but you took Smyrna and so I took Naples you could of supported me there instead of taking it but you choose not to.
And Germany and France kept fighting even though Russia had 15SC and Germany didnt even bother to stop him at Berlin(WTF)

Good Game Ivo

Sorry Barn3tt. Just thought your move to deny me Edinburgh was in poor taste after I helped you out at the beginning. Then I figured that if I couldn't get the builds to defend myself against Russian aggression, perhaps Russia should get the win. Sort of a WTA fail safe for mutually assured destruction. You screw me, I screw everyone.
Barn3tt (41969 D)
26 Oct 10 UTC
gg, Ivo- not usually that bad.

OK, let's clarify France and Germany fighting- didn't once attack a German center.
tilMletokill (100 D)
26 Oct 10 UTC
That was definetly well played.......I beleived you were going to think we could work together for a few more turns after I stoped pressing in the Black Sea but you moved perfectly when I was going for Italy giving him reason to attack me and you to do it too.

How did you help me? You got Belgium and were welcome to London. I'm sorry, but you played poorly and threw the game way too prematurely. If denying you one center in the beginning of the game is grounds for a game long vendetta and throwing the game, then I really don't know how you'll ever succeed.
JetJaguar (820 D)
26 Oct 10 UTC
It was a gunboat, so there's no way to know that I was welcome to London and you never supported me into Belgium. Look at the history and the multiple times you had supported you into Belgium early on. Long and short was that you got greedy and I got pissed off. You've obviously been around the block multiple times, and I think you understand the situation.
Barn3tt (41969 D)
26 Oct 10 UTC
I can understand not being happy with me. Why would I be building a friendship with you with a England in cd. However, Diplomacy is about adapting to the changing board. You didn't adapt. So, I guess I don't understand the situation. That being said, gg. Until next time.
JetJaguar (820 D)

Also, if my objective was to throw the game, then I didn't play poorly. I just played toward an unconventional objective.
Barn3tt (41969 D)
26 Oct 10 UTC
Lol- then, in that sense, you played a fantastically.

just a game
Ivo_ivanov (7545 D)

Fra does have a point, but he did not make the choice easy for Ger. From where I looked I only saw F threatening to kill G, but playing weak moves and leaving centers open. If it was intentional, I don't think anyone got it.

Having said that, Ger should have moved against me earlier. If Fra stabs him at least he tried and someone else messed up.

Not sure it would have helped though - I had the south secure, only a matter of time, so didn't really need the German centers, just to hold Scandinavia.
Ivo_ivanov (7545 D)
26 Oct 10 UTC
JetJaguar - I don't want to be ungrateful, and sorry for the ugly stab, however "throwing the game" is poor play. You need to have very good reasons and no other reasonable choice to go that way. Nothing like that hapened here.
JetJaguar (820 D)
26 Oct 10 UTC
I simply found the Edinburgh move really tacky... bad sportsmanship as it were. It was a clever move and a smart one from a strategic standpoint. In a regular game things could be smoothed out, but in a gunboat I took it to be pretty much an up yours gesture.
Barn3tt (41969 D)
26 Oct 10 UTC
Well, why would I let you in? It wasn't clear to me that you were going to move on Russia? At that point, Italy and Turkey looked to be perfectly capable of containing Russia.
JetJaguar (820 D)
26 Oct 10 UTC
Respectfully disagree Ivo. Throwing the game is a viable response to the actions of others in a WTA game. I don't consider it the height of great strategy, and it certainly is self defeating, but I believe it adds an interesting dynamic to game play. I for one want people to think twice before they stab me or get greedy. Tall poppy syndrome writ large I guess. If you're against people throwing the game, why did you take the win?

Barn3tt - had your moves succeeded that turn, you would have had three spaces to build and only two open home SCs. After supporting you into Belgium and holding the line at the standard German-French border, why wouldn't you let me in after it's clear that I wasn't on the offensive against you. At that point I didn't see any evidence that you were going to help me out one bit, so I more or less said to heck with you after what had been a decent relationship/alliance.
Ivo_ivanov (7545 D)

"I for one want people to think twice before they stab me or get greedy."

You have to give them a chance to do that. You made your point to FRA once you took BEL and pushed into BUR, vote for a draw and move back, if he's stupid enough to attack you again you'll still be able to give me the game. If you want people to learn you have to give them a chance to learn and get a reward. Only negative motivation (what you're doing) is not going to get you anywhere. There needs to be a stick, but you also need a carrot. You're ruling out a win-win scenario with FRA because of emotions. This is poor play. You may disagree, but what I'm saying is not an opinion, it's a logical conclusion :)

"If you're against people throwing the game, why did you take the win?"
Soccer pundits have a saying "if there were no mistake there will be no goals". It's the same in here - if noone makes mistakes all games will be 3-5 people draws.

Plus, part of the credit goes to me :P - I played you well, making sure I'm always the third party and in position to change allies. I kept FRA isolated and my Balkan neighbors always on the brink and overextended, and then stabbed when they were most exposed. I'm quite happy with my play actually - very good decisions for logistics and timing, allowed me to move very fast :)

Anon gunboat looks like a place where one develops very brutal skills. It's like playing against AI bots, no human element, no names, no nothing... not sure whether I like it or not.

I see where you're coming from, but I've also been in games where I've tried to throw the game and just had the offending party wind up as a part of the draw (and man isn't that dispiriting). From that perspective throwing a game is actually harder than you think. As for emotions coming into play, all I can say that I found the result of an end game on even terms w/ France rather gratifying. But then I also laugh when I see strangers fall.

What is a featured game? One of the games I am playing got a star next to it, and it says that is is a featured game, with one of the highest stakes. Is this something automatic?

Go for the win or draw with good players
In the eyes of a high point player, is it better to try to go for the win or take a three-way draw (in world map). What is more "respected"? What creates more "trust" for future games? (I know its a form of meta-gaming, but I think that for long-playing players-it appears important). Thanks for your opinions.

Retreating in an endgame situation
I just finished an anonymous gunboat game and I do not believe that any of the dislodged units in the last season were permitted to retreat. Surely under certain circumstances that retreat could be the difference between a solo and a draw, no? Does webDip process the win before or after autumn retreats, and/or does it have programming to know whether the retreat can affect the outcome of the game?

The Wonderful 100: History's Greatest Persons
There are so many people on this site with so many interests, and so many important people throughout history at that, I thought it might be interesting to see who and what we value throughout mankind. "Great" can be any combination of importance, influence, and personal feeling for the person, can even be "evil" people--everyone nominates 5, when we reach 100 or so, we'll vote and see...WHO are Wonderful 100, the Greatest Figures in Human History (and who'll be"#1!") ;)

Win : Draw ratios
My position is that it is better to risk a place in a draw for a reasonable chance at a win.

So a better win:draw ratio is more important than a your (win+draw) : (survived+eliminated) ratio...

Map didn't update.
Don't know if this is a problem with anyone else, but I'm playing in gameID=39406, and the map didn't update with the results of the 1902 build phase. When I click on the icon to get the large map, I see the disbanded and newly built units. More concerning, though, is that I can't issue orders for my new unit...not only does the map not show it, the orders don't load for it either.

Any ideas as to why this is happening? Anyone else experiencing the same thing?

What happens if you order your troops to attack your own troop with strength enough that it would ordinarily be dislodged?
