I was able to order a convoy to Godthab (South Greenland) as Northwest Canada or whatever the heck I am (yellow). The convoy was not successful, but I never should have been able to order it in the first place.

Question about open games
I have been in many games in the past few weeks where a player or two (or three) went missing. Rarely has anyone jumped in and taken over the power. I was wondering, What are the percentages of a game getting a player to jump in after a country has gone CD?
jimgov (219 D(B))

I know that I want to jump into a few, but the points needed vs. the rewards are pretty bad. Is there any way to make it more attractive to a player to take over a power, like making it only 1/2 of the points the country is "worth" at that moment? Just a thought.

No there isn't, because sometimes the powers to be replaced are in brilliant situations.
However, some form of scaling could possibly be used, perhaps the fraction could be related to pot/ (fraction of units owned )^2 or similar. I haven't tried this though so I don't know how it would go.

Yeah, I think half price if a power has equal or less than his starting SCs
figlesquidge (2131 D)

Hmm, these are more sensible ideas. Don't think we've had this chat before, people have always just been demanding cheaper CD takeovers.

My first ever Diplomacy win was taking over a CD Turkey where the juggernaut was up to about 20 centers, and Russia had left himself wide open to a stab. That CD takeover most definitely should not have been half price.

Recently took over a CD turkey where Italy and Turkey were holding of a growing Germany. I played for two rounds and drew the game and made about 25 D. Easiest 25 ever!
figlesquidge (2131 D)

Precisely. I know of a game where that sort of thing happened. Russia was taken over and stabbed Italy for the lions share of a 3k pot.

yes because in certain games you build up a relationship with another player and a new player just can't carry that forward.
jimgov (219 D(B))

Well some countries are "worth" an amount, I presume, based on SCs, and the actual units are less because they were attacked and destroyed. Just keeps people out of games where a country could still make a difference instead of just being easy pickings.

Looking at analytics a couple of days ago there was a definite lull over the xmas break, but it looks like now that everyone is back hard at work the site is back to normal activity ;-P So hopefully any CD trend should have reversed/be reversing

Although in fairness General one should always expect that their ally may stab, so its still our fault if that happens to us.

If we would have a "Leave" option maybe some of those guys who decided to leave would use it. That would make possible for those who want to jump in to do it faster and not to wait two phases while CD country is falling apart and becoming less and less attractive for takeover.

Old story, I know...
jimgov (219 D(B))

I like the leave option. Unfortunately..I am afraid that some may abuse it if they get in a bad situation. Maybe you can only use it x number of times?
figlesquidge (2131 D)

I think that if you go into CD and are under 100 then that's tough luck and you shouldn't be given your points back. That would have an effect I think, although it must be noted it would lead to more people creating new accounts.
Kamen (1935 D(S))

@jimgov - how could somebody abuse it? I think that if somebody thinks he is in bad situation now he simply stops playing. With the leave option he could at least drop out at once and let others play without need to wait for a whole phase. Old rule that by missing two phases you are forced to leave should stay, of course.

New player, in a bad position, seeing a button that basically says "I quit." Not veteran players, but I could see a potential problem. You want new players to stick it out. You do not want to give them an easy way out.
figlesquidge (2131 D)
18 Jan 10 UTC
Firstly, to clarify I'm really not sure on the issue, I'm just pointing out both sides.

If we make it easier to quit, some players will jump out when they should be playing on and trying to save the game. Fining points for CDs would reduce this, but those most likely to do so would still end up doing it, and just start a new account after.
Kamen (1935 D(S))
18 Jan 10 UTC
The right thing to do would be to ask those players who have quit why they did it and how could we prevent this. At the moment we are all guessing, of course. My guess is that not having leave button doesn't stop them quitting.

The best thing is to "earn" some points and to play more "expensive" games. Then the others will come and repeating our posts here :-).

Why are games given more time when processes cease to work?
This doesn't seem logical- you would have actually had more time to input your moves. So why is more time added on?

There was a thread about 15 pages ago about getting a Texas team for the World Cup tourney. It was started by Dipper Don and is now locked. So I was hoping to solidify a team or two since sign ups are now.
