Bug in world map.

I was able to order a convoy to Godthab (South Greenland) as Northwest Canada or whatever the heck I am (yellow). The convoy was not successful, but I never should have been able to order it in the first place.

Question about open games
I have been in many games in the past few weeks where a player or two (or three) went missing. Rarely has anyone jumped in and taken over the power. I was wondering, What are the percentages of a game getting a player to jump in after a country has gone CD?

Why are games given more time when processes cease to work?
This doesn't seem logical- you would have actually had more time to input your moves. So why is more time added on?

Allow me to rant for a minute
I was just playing this Anon game: gameID=19306
If any of the other six players reads my post they can guess which country I am pretty quickly, but, for the rest I was Turkey.
Just have a loot at the game please.

Let me start by saying that I generally play on webdiplomacy for the fun of playing diplomacy. While I appreciate the complex system put together to calculate points and standings, I personally don't put too much stock in them. By extension it's safe to say that I'm very much against meta-gaming, or meta-alliance or meta anything for that matter. I mean what's the point? (pardon the pun).

So, getting back to the game:

Russia was a new player and a little unsure of how to put in moves. He made a lot of mistakes in his early turn but soon he was doing fine, and by the end of it he was actually the strongest on the board.

Anyway, Austria was being uncooperative so I asked Russia to help, since he made some early mistakes Austria got very strong fast. Then Russia figured out how things worked and we started working well together. At a similar point Austria decided to attack Italy as well which resulted in him being attacked from three sides.

Anyway all that was a game of diplomacy - "shit happens" as it were.

What was more interesting (or irritating) was the conversation in the global chat. Generally speaking I ignore the global chat as in a 5 min live game it's difficult to message all your neighbours and submit moves let alone look at the global chat. However, when I did look at the global chat I found that there was a lot of consternation over the fact that apparently Russia and Turkey were allied. I'm not actually sure that was what the problem or discussion was about since I didn't follow all of it, but this is basically how the conversation went:

Germany, was initially doing well and suddenly lost a lot of SCs, for some reason he declared that "it would be good to know who is who in this game" and later that there was something "fishy" going on.

England agreed with Germany and soon started asking to draw or cancel the game.

Austria (after stabbing his only ally) suddenly lost a lot of SCs and declared that he was tired so he wanted to draw the game. Now he may have been tired but still that was poor form.

Anyway I didn't want a big uproar over something so small so I ended up drawing, and the game was drawn with all 7 players still intact (more or less). I did not want to continue in a game with so much finger pointing. In fact I still don't know exactly what the accusations were. As I said I wasn't carefully following the conversation and only caught snippets.

All I'd like to say is that the game which was interesting was spoilt by unreasonable accusations.

/end rant!

Yeh, you all look fine.
As for your comments I disagree. A draw is part of a game and if Austria had lost a lot of SCs then calling for a draw sounds like quite a good tactical move!

Doesn't that abuse the goodwill of others though? It's like asking for a pause and me refusing because it's tactically better for me.
figlesquidge (2131 D)

Well, not in my mind: I think a draw is part of a game and pause/cancel are external

I think it is a bit lame to ask for a draw because it is late or you are tired. If that is the case then you shouldn't have started the game.

If using false accusations of meta-gaming to get a draw out of a game is legit, then you might as well make meta-gaming legit. The point is to play the game, not to play the system in place on this website.
figlesquidge (2131 D)

I don't see why the can't ask Alderian? I wouldn't expect to be given it though!

The rules in the real diplomacy state that you can use any means to win, e.g. eavesdropping is allowed (almost encouraged). In theory why shouldn't a knowledgeable individual be allowed to hack into someone else's account and steal their info, etc? Or, maybe my posting in this forum is a ruse to get my fellow players (in the above game) banned. The point is these methods are unrealistic on web based game where there are necessary boundaries. However, those limits need to be clearer. I gave a draw for a couple of reasons. Firstly, I am honestly a nice guy. I'd rather not offend anyone than win. Obviously I stab people, lie, etc. to win a game of diplomacy. But, if everyone says they want a draw and some people really mention that they don't feel up to playing I’ll give it. Hey it’s only a game and sometimes I may need a draw as well. Secondly, it was clear that people were upset in that game for some reason or other (and to be honest I still haven’t figured out exactly what the reason is) and I didn’t want to play in such a hostile environment (ok it’s diplomacy!) so I figured I’d leave. What spoilt it was that I essentially wasted an hour.
My point is how do you define what is external and what is internal. I’ve heard a lot of people complain that others have not been giving pauses when requested. Isn’t that a tactically sound move as well? I mean if you know someone (say a neighbor) is about to CD and so requests a pause wouldn’t it benefit you by not giving a pause?

It’s all well and good to define the boundaries for internal and external rules but obviously they’ll be manipulated in certain situations. This is fine from a diplomacy perspective, but, unfortunately, there are some genuine people in this world!
figlesquidge (2131 D)
18 Jan 10 UTC
Well here we see Draw as internal and pause as External. Imagine you were actually playing with friends.
A pause is someone saying "Look guy's we've been playing all afternoon and I really need a piss. Tell you what, why don't we have an hour off, get some more <random social thing you'd run out of - Nacho's?> and get some fresh air.
A draw is something within the game because its a tactical thing.

We've got some rules coming: they'll be here very soon and I'll check with others if I'm allowed to post a draft set sooner rather than later.

Will the feature be coming someday, where you have like an account of 3 days, which you can force pause on people?
just sort of came to my mind while reading this
figlesquidge (2131 D)
18 Jan 10 UTC
What do you mean? Are you saying everyone should have X minutes of free pausing that they can force upon other players?
If that's what you mean then certainly not!
superman98 (118 D)

I think that voting should be the majority instead of unanomous because sometimes some really annoying people will not vote pause just to annoy somebody. Please add that feature!!

@fq: yes sort of, but why not?
figlesquidge (2131 D)
18 Jan 10 UTC
Well sorry, that came across rather too forceful: I wouldn't want it added.
If the feature was added it would be a nightmare for other players, and people could hold games up with no reasoning, it would lead to anger and indeed to confusion when people found their game paused without their consent.
jazzguy1987 (0 DX)

What about the majority instead of the unanomous because some people are annoying and don't vote for no reason!
figlesquidge (2131 D)
18 Jan 10 UTC
I'm not sure. I can see logic in making a pause require all but 1, but an unpause should still require everyone.

A useful possible/probably feature is the limited pause - ie pause for 2 days etc. Were these added it would be much easier to get people to agree to it.
superman98 (118 D)
18 Jan 10 UTC
Yeah: Or, even better, when everybody pauses, have everybody enter a time for the unpause so there are no annoying people who never unpause!
superman98 (118 D)
18 Jan 10 UTC
And make sure everybody agrees on the time, of course.
Draugnar (0 DX)
18 Jan 10 UTC
You could just make the pause length be for the shortest time of all the selecte dones and annoucne that the game will automatically unpause at X time on Y date.
