Being Europe on the world map sucks
There's only one SC you can get, every one of your neighbors can force two, and France is incredibly vulnerable.

I'm trying to get one together now, and the map certainly doesn't look very fair. Oh well.

What really gets me is that the Philippines is a territory but not a supply center. Why would anyone go there? What's the point?
vamosrammstein (757 D(B))
14 Jan 10 UTC
Is it similar to Albania or Naf? Useful only when everything else has been taken?
StevenC. (1047 D(B))
14 Jan 10 UTC
Yeah, the World War 4 variant is much better....so many supply centers to capture and it is much better balanced....
Invictus (240 D)
14 Jan 10 UTC
The Philippines are islands, so I suppose there's a stalemate line with fleets or something, but it still strikes me as strange.

Also America looks unrealistically weak. Canada looks like it can take "Union" on the first turn. Call me crazy, but I think a game like this should at least be balanced if not realistic. How can Chile-Argentina-whatever be stronger than America initially?

This being said, I think it'll be a fun game. I don't think I'll be switching to world map games, though.
Jamiet99uk (808 D)

Who developed this world map? Kudos to them for putting in their work, but I would suggest it does need further development.

Also, why is there a Power in Antarctica?
mel1980 (0 DX)
14 Jan 10 UTC
agreed. Antratica as a power???

And Quebec too?

Really.....
djbent (2572 D(S))

yeah Europe is in a tough spot. so is "Pacific Russia" which is such a silly name. but hey, so is Austria-Hungary in the classic board! gotta make up for what is missing tactically with your excellent diplomatic skills, jbalcorn ;D
Yeah the maps unbalanced and a little unrealistic but think about it how many builds does Italy usually get? One. While all the others can get at least two. Sometimes it's different with Italy getting two or Austria getting three in the same way that when I played USA I got three and I was the strongest power in the game. It is unbalanced but so is the "Vanilla" map if you think about it.

Antratica is a stupid power though.
djbent (2572 D(S))

i think the kingdom of penguins is a great power, that should not be messed with!

Hi guys, new to webDiplomacy - I know goonDip had variants until it closed down, but how do you access the variants like the World map you mention before here? (played this variant on goonDip and I agree, Antartica is a stupid power. Totally illogical!)
grumbledook (569 D(S))
14 Jan 10 UTC
Psh! Everyone knows Antarctica represents the Shoggoths...
saffordpc (163 D)
14 Jan 10 UTC
Antarctica is the best power on the whole map. maybe you all just to stupid to realize it. I completely agree with what djbent said if you couldn't figure that out
DarioD (2326 D)

@djbent: with the difference that Austria-Hungary is historically correct ;)

Having been both Europe (in a goondip game) and Pacific-Russia (here), I must say that the latter is the absolute worst country on the map. You have *zero* guaranteed centers, and you're surrounded on both sides by two of the most powerful countries on the map (Russia and China), neither of whom have any incentive to let you live.
jbalcorn (429 D)
14 Jan 10 UTC
@djbent it's gunboat. There go my diplomatic skills.

@Tolstoy - thanks for the pep talk!!! LOL

@jbalcorn - alright then, you're screwed ;P

Antarctica is the easiest power on the map.... what's bad out it?
Jamiet99uk (808 D)
14 Jan 10 UTC
Ambassador - you need to have over 100 D. This then gives you the 'advanced options' when you are creating a new game. The advanced options include this variant map.
pfranklin51 (140 D)
14 Jan 10 UTC
you can still join world map games, you just can't create them.
epikphail (140 D)

I am playing as antartica and I agree that It is a good country to play as, especially with the right allies.
Onar (131 D)
15 Jan 10 UTC
I disagree, I think antarctica should start with an army of some kind.
saffordpc (163 D)
15 Jan 10 UTC
just make the first build an army and your fine
Onar (131 D)
15 Jan 10 UTC
But you have no guaranteed builds. I think the map creator really set it up for Australia and Antarctica to fight.
saffordpc (163 D)
15 Jan 10 UTC
you have one guaranteed build syo
flashman (2274 D(G))
15 Jan 10 UTC
So far, from the games I have seen/played, one country has the hardest starting position (the new Austria-Hungary), and that is Pacific Russia.

I believe it has no guaranteed build in the first year. That sucks but, as said above, the classic game is not balanced either and these differences show up in the early diplomacy.

We have solved the problem in one game by adjusting the code and allocating Pacific-Russia to women players only. Great move really, they can talk all they like but get nowhere in the end... ; )

And, if anyone wants to try themselves in a real Dip-feast, please join us: http://webdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=19054

Women. Er, ladies, are especially welcome.
I concur with flashman's evaluation of Pacific Russia. It is also very vulnerable to convoy attacks via the artic circle (particularly if combined with other northern fleets) and suffers badly from having its home centres strung out in a line rather than being bunched together - making it that much harder for its units to support each other.

I had a whole list of how the map can be improved on goondip. Sadly I can't access said list anymore :/ I do remember asking for Austria-Hungary being a neutral SC.
I'm currently working on my third (feh) world map game that will outclass this map at least...

Anyone else think this game was odd?
http://www.webdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=19044
Seems like an oddly strong alliance between England/France/Italy for an Anon, no private message game... Especially considering France had troops next to both of the others' home SCs and not only did he not move in, but the others didnt even try defending them....Or am I paranoid?

World Dip Map with all players starting in EUROPE
Like it says, I had this idea the other day while going to sleep: how about a regular vanilla Diplomacy map (with a few alterations) surrounded by a map of the rest of the world? About 95%+ of the territories outside the original standard Dip map would be unoccupied, except perhaps for one or two isolated colonies for each Great Power.

Mods please look at this
gameID=19044

Check the behavior between France, England and Italy. They all joined right in the last minute and never made any true advances on one another. I believe that it is only fair to cancel the game and give everyone their bets back. I can't stand playing with these cheaters. And when confronted about it, the response from England was "no habla ingles"
