An Apology to All I Have Troubled
Hey everyone it's me Zezima or Sniffy whichever you prefer... or don't prefer. The past couple days I have caused a lot of havoc here in the forums for my metagaming. I've come to say to all of you that I am sorry for what I have done. Right or Wrong it is not acceptable in this community and I will no longer metagame. I can only hope the community will accept my apology and maybe even forgive me for what I have done.

Sincerely,
Zezima

Unit Retreat question
If, for instance i had a fleet in the Gulf of Lyon and another on the South Coast of Spain which i then supported into the West Med, from the Gulf, would the enemy fleet that is already in the West Med be given the option of retreating to the Mid Atlantic?

The enemy fleet is from an Eastern nation and i am a Western power, if that makes any difference..

Anonymity
To avoid meta-gaming, is there a case for removing the names of players from the games they are involved in? perhaps you could just leave the score , shich changes regularly anyway as a guide to your contestants abilities?

Genuine Googlewhacks
Does anyone have any good 'googlewhack' search criteria?

A googlewhack being wehen you type something into Google to search for information, and it brings back only 1, yes, just one result for you.
Submariner (111 D)

In doing some research for the thread on free will v fate, I came across a googlewhack... This one was a little bit of a cheat though as it was a link from a broader search on the nexus of control that I had already done, so I can claim no credit... But it got me wondering what googlewhacks out there you have ever come across.

author:"Bijlsma-Frankema" intitle:"Understanding the trust-control nexus"

'blaggard Margrave flensed violently' is a googlewhack. Makes sense too...vaguely.

I don't know any "googlewhacks," but go to google, type "french military victories" and click the "I'm feeling lucky button." (NOTE: NOT search)
WhiteSammy (132 D)
30 May 09 UTC
also if you type "find chuck norris" and then push the "im feeling lucky button" it has a similar result
Darth (137 D)

Lol. Though actually that site is inaccurate. The French have won a war. Just One problem. There was no deaths, no battles, and no casualties. Not even a confrontation. A single family or small country (can't remember which) declared war against them because the French King insulted them.
Actually my name is a googlewhack. Apparently I published one thing in college that made it onto the internet without my knowledge.

Here's one that's two words and one result. Inspired, by woooo himself. Warning: This could break this thread. =/

"impale wooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo"

And now phpDip joins the few sites on the internet that have ever used that many o's in an exclamation of woooo...

Sadly to be truly inspired, you would need to be able to type "victoire militaire francaise" into google.fr Sadly it lists many many websites given over to French wins!
Mr. Pinguin (344 D)

If you do much searching for specific strings of words (i.e. with the search words in quotation marks), then you'll find lots of stuff with few, one, or no hits..
But that breaks the rule of only being two words long I guess.

That French Military Victories thing is funny, but completely wrong. The French were on the winning side in both WW1 and WW2.

France was overun in WW2!

But of course it's not true, but it's still funny.
Submariner (111 D)

@spyman "They were on the winning side in both WW1 and WW2"

Well so was Paraguay, who officially declared war on Germany three days before the end of both wars... it doesn't mean they did anything to help.

I think that is France's biggest problem with Britain... they can't bring themselves to admit that we saved them.

They didn't invite our Royals to the D-Day commemorations this year. Furthermore, they claimed it was primarily a Franco-American event!

Doesn't Napolean count for the French?

Napoleon was Corsican, with his family originally hailing from the Italian mainland. The original spelling of his name was 'Buonaparte'. In his youth he was a Corsican nationalist.
trim101 (363 D)
31 May 09 UTC
yeah but most of his marshalls were french and their troops were french so they have to count
Hereward77 (930 D)
31 May 09 UTC
Very true. You have to bear in mind though that virtually every major battle the French won he was in command. Areas where he was not in command tended to be problematic. Examples are Italy after his initial campaigns and the Iberian peninsula. Haiti is also another good example. It was his leadership that was the deciding factor. French armies of the time were good, but they couldn't win wars without his leadership.
Chrispminis (916 D)
31 May 09 UTC
Hereward, I believe the Corsica was sold to the French just prior to Napoleon's birth, so he would be French, would he not? If that were not the case he could not have ascended to become Emperor. It's sort of funny in that if Corsica hadn't been secretly sold to France, it would still be Genoese and Napoleon would never have been able to do the things he did.
Hereward77 (930 D)
31 May 09 UTC
You're right, it was sold to France. I really don't think that 'made' him French any more than the French creating the Confederation of the Rhine made Bavarians Rhinelanders. As far as I recall Napoleon was sent to France to remove him from the influence of the insurgency in Corsica. I can't remember the name of the particular rebel, but there was a man he admired. In any case, he wasn't French in native tongue, culture or blood.

All that said, he was a damn fine general and France's armies and marshals of the time were also formidable. That doesn't mean they could have won wars without him though :D
Chrispminis (916 D)
31 May 09 UTC
Fair enough. I don't think anybody really thinks that France has never won a battle or war and is militarily incompetent. It's been a major military power for much of European history, though I think that is coloured poorly in modern times by their opposition to the Iraq War and their humiliating defeat in WWII.

Counterpart Countries
I've seen this theory that suggests that in the EFG and ART triangles there are coutries which are counterparts of each other (namely E-T F-R and G-A) such that they do well with each other and also have similar playing styles. What does your own experience show about this?

Submariner is untrustworthy and cannot read.
He turned on me in one game, then I got stuck in 2 more with him. He contacted me in both games to make an alliance again. I pointed out we are allies in 2 games so it could work our well, and he accused me of meta gaming.
