Inheritance: Interesting case
Since we have had a number of debates here in the past about inheritance and the law, I thought some of you would be interested in this case from the UK:

Off to Join the Navy
Well folks, three weeks from today, I leave to join the NROTC unit at the University of Notre Dame. I expect that will severely limit my Diplomacy playing time. Thanks for all the fun. I'll be back.

Why do people think the moon is old?
Have you ever been to the moon? no. The few astronauts who supposedly went to this so called 'moon' are all controlled by the government, who are too afraid to admit the truth.

taking over CD positions
When I first started here, I made the mistake of taking over CD countries in existing games. That's pretty hard to win at, especially when new to the game. And I learned taking over CD positions was fruitless and thankless.

My question is, now that Reliability Ratings are up and running, does taking over CD countries do anything to improve RR?

Every car keeps track of the amount of km or miles driven..
With regards to the engine for instance, wouldn't it make more sense to track the amount of rounds (not per minute, but total)? And perhaps the average rpm? Or is rpm not the key factor in ruining your engine?
Jamiet99uk (865 D)

Such devices exist - a tachograph, as fitted to all trucks in the UK, records this information, and more.

Why not normal cars though?
Seems like relevant info when deciding whether you take your car to the garage, or when you're buying an occasion.

Is it too expensive?

I would imagine this is a case of "close enough is good enough", with the established "odometer reading" being available in every car for quite a long time now.

These days there's an ever increasing amount of data in the various "engine computers" though, so who knows what the manufacturer is logging.

abgemacht (1076 D(G))

I suspect newer cars actually do have a lot of this data and if not, they probably will soon. The reality is that an odometer is a very easy and accurate device which is why it was first used. While a rotomoter would certainly provide more info, until recently, it would have required a lot of additional sensors and components the cost of which simply couldn't be justified.

"This wouldn't work at all on electric or hybrid cars."

Because electric motors don't spin?

And yes, RPM is the key factor to ruination of thine engine. Well, second to forgetting to put oil in it.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
24 Jul 15 UTC
Yeah, but both average and total RPM probably end up being pretty useless numbers in practicality. Rotations per Mile could be useful, but it's probably so different depending on the model of car it would be a nightmare to keep track of.
Randomizer (722 D)
24 Jul 15 UTC
It's not RPM, but how rapidly if has to go up and down as the car shifts gears. That's why there was the shift to automatic transmissions with more gears to keep the engine moving at a constant rate.

Yeah oil is a biggie. I had a high school teacher that said he never changed his oil. The class told him to sell his car while it was sellable.
fiedler (1293 D)
24 Jul 15 UTC
Soon as you put a metric on it, the customer will want a warranty. No win for the manufacturer.

An engine revving at 2000rpm will generally last much MUUUCHH longer than one revving at 10,000rpm. Constant or no.

Witness the VW beetle still chugging about, even with a manuel tranny.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
24 Jul 15 UTC
OK, but that's an unrealistic range. You're probably looking at a range of 2500 to 3500 average RPM. How much of a difference does that make? The RPM acceleration will have a bigger impact.
fiedler (1293 D)
24 Jul 15 UTC
depends on the quality of the build, cylinder configuration etc.
