RR gated games- minimum requirement or must be greater than?
It says on my profile that my RR is 85%, but I can't seem to join or create games that have an RR requirement of 85%. Anyone know what might be causing this?

Is this something people still want? I haven't noticed many people setting games up with RR requirements - or have I just been looking in the wrong place?

Support cut by attack
I know that if you attack a occupied territory that is trying to give support move or hold then that support is cut. However, when a single attack with no support on the attack happens and the unit giving support has support from another country/unit shouldn't the support still happen. For instance; Smyrna support move to Con - Armenia support hold Smyrna - Syria move to Smyrna no support. Shouldn't the support to Con stand?

Just asking
TrPrado (461 D)

No, the support is still cut. The only way any sort of support would not be cut by it is in the scenario of Smyrna supporting a move from Armenia to Syria.
CoachShack (223 D)

Is that just an original rule from the board game? I guess it makes since in a battlefield situation whenever you are attacked you would have to turn to meet even if you had support. But you could split your force to handle both.

the idea of coastal support not helping with attacks from inland has been addressed in some variants, and the situation you're referring to has been also

A lot of the rules in Diplomacy don't make sense if you try to consider a real world situation (for example, the beleaguered garrison, or forward retreat). But, instead of thinking of support as another army in the same province, think of it as fire support and spotters. In that situation, coastal support could provide eg artillery fire to defend a territory from attacking forces.

But, really, don't think about it too much.

Diplomacy is an *abstract* game, CoachShack. It's not supposed to be a realistic battlefield simulation. 90% of the game is about negotiation, not battles.
A_Tin_Can (2234 D)

Negotiation? I thought it was about swearing.
Jamiet99uk (865 D)

That is a form of negotiation.

CoachShack: Yes, it's a rule from the original board game. This is an implementation of the original board game.

Great point Jamie. TY JECE.

And the abstraction means that one unit can't beat two without help. This is one of the basic inderlying principles. If Con moves to ank and smy supports, then Ank tries to cut that support, it fails as the supporting unit is already 'attacking' the unit in Ank.
orathaic (1009 D(B))

Or course you can defend a territory without resorting to a support hold.

You could instead order your 'defender' to move into the territory, this bouncing the possible attacker; meanwhile you have freed the unit to move out without losing a (possibly vital) territory.

So in your example:
Arm - Smy (Defending Smy)
Syria - Smy trying to take Smy)
Smy - Con (attacking) - with support...

For once I 100% agree with Jamie. You want wargames, go play them! Calhamer designed the game to reflect the name!

Don't agree with Jamie. That's why we can't have nice things.

Also Diplomacy for a long time was a distinct sect of wargaming.

I have access to many nice things, Valis. I just won't let *you* have them unless you start being a good boy.

Valis, I can speak with a some authority on the origins of the Dip hobby - it actually more grew out of the SF hobby; if you went to any Dipcon in the 70s, 80s and 90s, you would very rarely see wargames being played; only the occasional game of Axis and Allies (and one insane pair who insisted on bringing Drang Nach Osten, setting it up, making just a couple of turns, then putting it away again - all over a weekend!)

Words or uses of words you believe should be eradicated.
I admit it, I hate the misuse of language, or the creation of pseudo-words, especially when a public figure uses it in place of a perfectly functional alternative. I'll start with one that was used recently by a BBC (forsooth!) presenter:

New game idea
I just randomly thought of this: it may just be me being....me but how is this:
Anonymous (otherwise defeats the point) games where each player plays 2 countries. It could work for maps with an even number of countries. I'm not sure how points and such would work though, maybe just add them. It would add a new way to stab someone lol.

Feedback Request on Game
Hi, I was wondering if someone could give me some feedback/advice on the following game please: gameID=160372
I was Austria and in the second half of the game I was really trying to work with Italy to stop Germany winning. But Italy never seemed to get it. Is there something more I could have done in this situation to guarantee a draw?

non-live game advertising
Sparked by a different thread, I'd like to make known my disagreement with having non-live games advertised in a single thread.
I don't have the hard data, but I feel like there are less coordinated games, and those that are have their own thread (see abge or ssorenn's games for example)
