Can you marry a minor? Can you have sex with them when you're married?
Just a question I had after reading through Conservative Man's rather... typical thread...

In which countries is this possible? In which not? How about in practice?

Testing a premise.
I caught a repeat of a TV programme with Dara O'Briain the other day. The premise was that any word you choose in the dictionary could be guessed by someone who could ask you 20 questions. I'm not sure if this is true.

Star Trek Enterprise started to bore me
But Season 3 seems okay, save the occasional heavily-inspired-on-previous-star-trek-series episode. The Xindi are well thought out IMHO.

Nothing in that article indicates why the man was afraid for his life when there was a person standing on his porch at 4am in the morning. What was she doing when she was on his porch? Laying down, standing still, pounding on his door, looking in the window? It is very sad that something like this happened, but I am curious what prompted the man to be so afraid.

This happened in Michigan, a state that does not have a stand your ground law, so not sure how you could blame stand your ground on the outcome of this case.

"Michigan is one of several US states with a so-called stand your ground law, which allows the use of deadly force if a person feels their life is in danger, though it is unclear whether that will be argued in this case."
LIAR LIAR LIAR LIAR LIAR LIAR LIAR LIAR LAIR!

Michigan law allowed for deadly force only when you're in your own home, which I guess this was the case.

""It's hard to... believe it's an accident when a gun is in her face and the trigger is pulled," the family lawyer, Gerald Thurswell, told the Detroit News on Friday."
That contradicts the official autopsy:
"A post-mortem examination report released on Monday confirmed that McBride had been shot in the face, but not at close-range."

FUCK YOU BBC, and fuck anyone who wants to blame this on stand your ground.
NigeeBaby (100 D(G))

If it was not close range then surely that is worse because if she is some distance from him what did he have to be afraid of.

At a guess I would say the crazy drunk person at his house at 4am.

C'mon Nigs. The woman crashes into a parked car at 2 in the morning and ends up on a stranger's porch at 4am. No one has used any stand your ground law and justice has neither been done nor failed because there hasn't been time for anything to happen yet. What exactly are you wound up about?

Another example of pathetic journalism from the BBC. This may become a story, but at the moment it very much isn't. All we have are a bunch of rumours, half truths and wild speculation.

According to the shooter, it wasn't really self defence.

When someone was knocking on his door at 4 in the morning, he went to get his shotgun and accidentally discharged it before getting a good look at who was on his porch.

He's essentially pleading guilty to manslaughter.

First off, Dearborn Heights isn't predominantly white, not in the region that's 6 blocks away from Detroit like that paper claims. I find it hilarious that the paper quotes the story from the Detroit Free Press, and then tries to play this off as a racial murder in a all white neighborhood.

Second, there's not stand your ground law in Michigan. Third, the story completely overlooks the fact that the girl was probably in a demented state from the car accident since she was bleeding from her head before the shooting (http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-504083_162-57611554-504083/renisha-mcbride-shooting-homeowner-who-killed-teen-could-have-called-911-if-he-was-afraid-says-atty-for-victims-family/).

Fourth, the prosecutor asked the police to keep investigating before deciding to press changes, that doesn't mean it's not going to happen.
"Wayne County prosecutor Kym Worthy reportedly asked the Dearborn Heights police to continue investigating the case before deciding whether to press charges against the man."

So is it bad this girl died. Yes.
Does the man deserve to have charges pressed for involuntary manslaughter or above. Probably, and he probably will.
Is it a case of racial profiling. Really unlikely.
Does your newspaper distort the facts and lie? Yes.

Long time postal dip veteran been out of the hobby for a while got a jones to play again (last played ftf at Origins couple of years ago). Just signed up for Classic_57. Saw on another post where someone said the moves took long (one a day). I giggled at that, as a veteran postal player. Not quite sure I understand this betting points thing, but I will play and see how it goes. Wish me luck and don't think of me as blood in the water. tfwood

Should Literature Be Useful? (YES. ABSOLUTELY. ...Right?)
http://www.newyorker.com/online/blogs/books/2013/11/should-literature-be-useful.html I disagree with the degree to which the author of this article praises sheer idleness and imagination in literature--in my mind, that is NOT what makes literature great, at least not on its own. The best authors, far from being simply imaginative, had arguments to make about the human condition OR very real arguments to make on social, psychological, and political policy. Thoughts?

NFL Pick 'em: Week 10--The Niners/Bears w/ Reinforcements & the Pack w/o Rodgers!
We start Week 10 tonight with the Redskins and Vikings...but I'll just assume we're all picking the REDSKINS (and now watch the Vikings play spoiler, lol.) Da Bears have Jay Cutler back and will be going up against Suh and the Lions for 1st place in the NFC North, and with Aaron Rodgers gone 4-6 weeks, this could be the Lions' big chance. The Niners get Manningham and Aldon Smith back vs. the Panthers, Bengals/Ravens, Broncos/Chargers, it's Week 10--PICK 'EM!
