Obama's Speech
Obama has asked Congress to delay a military strike vote until the US can see if Syria will agree to relinquish chemical weapons, thoughts?

And did anyone else catch this little gem? "Neither Assad or his allies have any interest in escalation that would lead to his demise"

Breaking Bad Spinoff
I don't watch the series, but a lot of friends do, and I just saw that AMC has given the green light to a Saul Goodman spinoff series.

Answer me this
Why is satire never used by the religious against the nonreligious? Are the faithful just taking the high road, or is it, as I suspect, that satire can only be used to poke fun at the inherently ridiculous?

There is probably a good reason
But why oh why can't I just click on links rather than copy-paste-new-tab them?
Draugnar (0 DX)
10 Sep 13 UTC
Because they aren't links. They are text. And the reason is one never knows whem that link will be to a virus or something worse (like pr0n) so Kestas didn't code to allow the insertion of a link except very specifically formatted ones like threaded=??? userid=??? and gamedid=???
Draugnar (0 DX)
10 Sep 13 UTC
threadid=??? - Autocorrect
Draugnar (0 DX)
10 Sep 13 UTC
and gameid=??? - Typo
So what's the difference? Now I manually open links that may be a virus or pr0n (ohno!). In the case of YJs post in the Mujus thread, it was even worse. But it's the same level of security on content, just more hassle to open.

I'm going to side with minister of war here, if I'm on my phone, its almost impossible to read a linked article
steephie22 (182 D(S))
10 Sep 13 UTC
I agree with The Minister on that they should just be links IMO, but I understand why they are not and I accept it. It's a dictatorship after all, which is great, but does mean you have to make one or two sacrifices :P
Draugnar (0 DX)
10 Sep 13 UTC
The difference is that Kestas and the site can't be held responsible legally for you highlighting and pasting text but they might be for links they embed.

Yes, but *who* in his *right mind* would ever even *consider* suing Kestas? ;-)

Anyway, seems rather overzealous to me. If that were a legitimate concern, I'm sure 4chan would have more problems than it does. Links posted by users != responsibility. There are plenty of forums which have clickable links, no problemo.
Draugnar (0 DX)
10 Sep 13 UTC
"There are plenty of forums which have clickable links, no problemo. "

Most of the legitimate ones (not batshit 4chan types) have a prompt warning you that you are leaving their site. That's how they CYA themselves legally.
Alright, glad to hear it is possible! So is there any reason we don't do that? It would be so lovely.
Draugnar (0 DX)
10 Sep 13 UTC
Because Kestas is the primary coder and does it because he loves the site, making nothing off of it. This isn't a commercial site with ads and stuff that can pay programmers to constantly add features.
Clearly this is a common fixture of any board since 1995 and it doesnt need ad money to turn it on. I'm sure the option is there. Clearly Kestas turned it off, by choice, for probably a very good reason. I'm just curious.

Apparently nobody here knows.
Draugnar (0 DX)
10 Sep 13 UTC
Kestas wrote this forum from scratch. HE didn't take someone else's code. So it wasn't "turned off" because it never existed in the first place.
Draugnar (0 DX)

Oh, and apparently your an idiot because you didn't know that.

Detecting hyperlinks within user-inputted text and wrapping them in <a> tags isn't hard at all, especially in PHP. The fact that Kestas and company spent time linking gameid's and threadid's and NOT generic links means they explicitly did not want that functionality, not that the engineering manpower doesn't exist to implement it.
ghug (5068 D(B))

Most browsers have add-ons/extensions/whatever that make text that looks like a link clickable. Just find one of those.
Draugnar (0 DX)
11 Sep 13 UTC
@y2k - Minoster stated Kestas "turned it off" proving he (Minister) is a moronic fucktard of the highest order. That is all.
orathaic (1009 D(B))
11 Sep 13 UTC
Yeah, i think kestas specifically decided to support linking to threads, games and player profiles - this implies the use for the forum would be to support a community based around threads, games, and player profiles... hmm. I wonder why?

Draug, what happened to the grumpy yet reasonably friendly Draug that on occassion helped ppl out on the forum. I'm sure he was here when I just joined, where did he go?
Draugnar (0 DX)
11 Sep 13 UTC
I was friendly until you stated that Kestas turned something off and kept insisting it was an easy thing. You aren't a software developer and are a freeloader here. I don't care about the latter at all. It's a free site and Kestas wants it that way. But when you attack the site creator and imply he should just bow down to your whims because your uninformed opinion thinks it is easy and that he used someone else's code and must have turned the feature off, then you have gone beyond the pale and need to be called on the carpet for your stupidity and attitude of self-entitlement.
Haha, nice. So many ad hominem assumptions on this minute thread it's almost too hard to count. Like ora said, I know quite well the function is a mere minutes away in php. Second, far be it for you to talk about attacks on kj - the only attack anyone ever made to Kestas was your legal threat to sue him. Third, I asked for his considerations, not to ask him to implement.

But you did answer my question, I guess the semi-friendly Draug of yesteryear drowned in his own vitriol. Shame. I kinda liked that guy.

I know you like the last word, so I'll leave that to you.
Draugnar (0 DX)
11 Sep 13 UTC
Since I am getting the last word, I will end on the patently offensive quote and you can't respond to why it wasn't an assumption that Kestas turned off a feature on an existing codebase and how stupid you were in assuming that. Also, I doubt you had a clue about the capability in PHP so you just assumed it was easy without any first hand knowledge.

"I'm sure the option is there. Clearly Kestas turned it off, by choice"
Draugnar (0 DX)
11 Sep 13 UTC
Oh, and ad hominem means attacking the man. I attacked the mans statements. You made a statement. It was stupid. Your statement contained an attitutde of self-entitlement. I called you on it. Don't like it? Tough fucking shit.

The other advantage of not having click-able links that I can think of is it might discourage spammers. Why take the time to spam (or write a script to spam for you) when you are less likely to get clicks. Sure we get the occasional oil painting website spam, but that's a tolerable level that just gives us an opportunity to crack jokes.

I could be wrong though, maybe even with click-able links we would still get little spam. Just a thought.
