Obama's Speech
Obama has asked Congress to delay a military strike vote until the US can see if Syria will agree to relinquish chemical weapons, thoughts?

And did anyone else catch this little gem? "Neither Assad or his allies have any interest in escalation that would lead to his demise"

Breaking Bad Spinoff
I don't watch the series, but a lot of friends do, and I just saw that AMC has given the green light to a Saul Goodman spinoff series.

Answer me this
Why is satire never used by the religious against the nonreligious? Are the faithful just taking the high road, or is it, as I suspect, that satire can only be used to poke fun at the inherently ridiculous?

Messages lost ?
Hi, some players in my game pretend that some messages are not received by the other power. Is it a documented problem or do they badly do something ?
thanks !

Dip board game
I just want some advice on which version of the board game is recommended. Preferably one with actual armies and fleets rather than blocks of wood.

That one is pretty good - nice map & metal pieces.

Does anybody own the 2008 version? any good?
I have the 1982 edition. I like the older map. It has colored plastic stars (armies) and anchors (fleets). I'm not fond of the wooden pieces from the 1976 edition. I prefer the stars and anchors to the metal cannons and ships (1999), probably because I'm just more used to them. It's really just whatever best matches your taste and style.
I have the 2008 version and I like it just fine. I don't know any of the older editions though.

See, I feel just the opposite. I prefer the wooden pieces, and they especially pop in the Colonial Diplomacy board. The plastic stars and anchors never did anything for me, and the metal cannons and ships are slightly better. But the wooden pieces remind me of those tactical maps of the era, Generals pushing wooden division markers around.

I love the 1976 edition (and previous) with the blocks of wood ... the game is already abstract, why introduce model ships and stuff?

The metal ships and cannons are pretty awesome, i'd love to get my hands on a copy...

I grew up playing on the blocks of wood version, so I have a soft spot for it, but the only one I have currently is the newer version with the cannons and ships ... it really does not matter a whole lot though!

I actually learned with paper maps and colored markers, so its still weird to me when I see the physical board.
I like the concept of wood over plastic, but the actual wooden pieces are too cubist. The fleets are like roads from Settlers of Catan.
ckroberts (3548 D)

Oh man, I love Settlers of Catan.

I have a related question. I have a newer board with cardboard units which I do not like. Where would be the best place to get plastic or metal places, preferably not too expensively, to replace them? My idea now is to salvage games at thrift shops but that doesn't seem to be the best idea.
I bought my first Settlers box for a buck at a school rummage sale, sat on it for years without ever trying it. You can get older versions of games on eBay.

To clarify, I have a newer version of Diplomacy. I like my Settlers just fine, though if I were a rich man I'd buy the fancy one with the wooden terrain tiles.
I know. I just mushed the two ideas into one paragraph. You can get older versions of games, including Diplomacy, on eBay.

We bought my mother in law the fold up Settlers table top board that you can place on a card table and has built in slots for the tiles, cards, etc. It's pretty cool, and we use it when we go visit her.
The metal units are awesome. I have three boxes, yessss my precious.

so...v1999 has the metal guns and battleships? that's the one I want then :)
but..yigg, virtualbob, rancher, I do like the idea of a general in full regalia pushing wooden blocks around with a stick :) does any version offer a wooden stick?
and on a tangent, did generals of the era (and earlier) use blocks, or shapes to define inf/cav/art on their maps?

A Solution in Syria
The object of most people, at least those posting on this site, about the war is as simple as averting an international war.

Here's a new one: http://ideas.time.com/2013/08/29/diplomacy-with-iran-key-to-ending-syria-war/
