Arguing vs. Debating
Arguing is about bluster whereas debate is more about learning, than it is necessarily impressing the other side with how awesome your beliefs are.

Your favorite Avalon Hill style table top paper-cardboard-and-dice game?
A question for the old folks out there.
I don't remember the name of it, probably D-Day. Boxed, AH style. Covered Normandy invasion and reconquest of France. Played that over and over again back in the day. Good times.

Memoir 44 is a fun game.

I've been getting away from dice based games.

The current games on my friends' and my list of regular games are:
Smallworld
Powergrid
PuertoRico
Dominion
Settlers of Catan
Agricola
Supremacy was cool for the time. We had some very fun games hanging on the brink of Global Thermonuclear War. From what I hear we were the exception to the rule. We almost never ended in nuclear winter. Even had a game that was entirely economic with nobody engaging the others in open warfare.

Also play Roborally on occasion.
Pandemic is a fun co-op game.
Last Night on Earth is a fun team game, humans vs zombies!

Does anyone else on here watch the Tabletop web series that goes up on youtube every other week or so?

Smallworld is fun--my brother introduced me to that recently. We also had a good time playing Road Kill Rally.
I have watched Tabletop. Smallworld looks like fun.

I agree with The Hanged Man, Titan is the coolest. I picked it up as an app on iPad a bit ago, it has been fun to revisit it.

Smallworld is fun.

CA, this past week's episode of tabletop was the game StarTrek Catan, a StarTrek: TOS themed variation of Settlers of Catan. Looks like a fun variation. Not sure it's worth $50 though.

Midway was cool!

Another good game was "Gettysburg" -- very in depth, had to build your lines, leaders came in to play strongly...good simulation.

Powergrid is cool - got it at Christmas - much different end-game strategy than I expected - my daughter won the first game! (Yay for her!!)

Don't really like Smallworld...not as robust a game as I wanted - lots of potential, cool concept , but kind of obvious/shallow strategy, etc...
Thanks Jon,

I'll have to watch that one. My wife likes settlers and is a big Star Trek fan. I almost bought that one when I picked up settlers. I think it was on sale for $40 or a little less at Target.
Jon65 (112 D)
22 Jul 13 UTC
CA, I saw it in Target the other day and it was still $49.99 down here. If it goes down in price I'll probably get it.

Have you played any of the Settlers expansions? I really like the Seafarers of Catan expansion.
Jon65 (112 D)
22 Jul 13 UTC
Krellin,

I recently bought some expansions for PowerGrid. I got the expansion power grid deck as well as expansion maps. I got the Korea/China map which is really interesting. The Korea side has two supply pools, and you can buy from either one, but you can only buy from one per turn. China has the power plants in a specific order and has one less than the number of players, so you essentially have 4 people bidding for 3 power plants each turn. Makes for some interesting games. The other one is Bennelux/Central Europe. Bennelux is nice because it has cheaper connection costs and thus plays quicker. I haven't played Central Europe yet, but it has nuke free zones where you can't buy nuke plants unless you have cities outside of those zones.

Branching out a little, History of the World was very good ... lots of things to think about in terms of leaders, regions, event cards, etc. There was a computer version of it with AI that I wish I could find!!
I've played the Seafarers and Knights expansions of Catan. I prefer the original. Seafarers was good, wasn't that into Knights.

Settlers of America: Trails to Rails is a fun game. Very different than Catan, but I like it.

Settlers of Catan and Talisman are popular in my house. I always liked Steve Jackon's G.E.V., but could never find anyone who wanted to play it with me. http://www.sjgames.com/ogre/articles/gevnotes.html

I always hag that problem with Diplomacy. Getting seven people who might have to devote five hours at a sitting was tough.

Ah, so many... Squad Leader. Tac Air. Gettysburg (the '77 version, I believe... the advanced game is the best simulation of Civil War combat I've found). Wooden Ships and Iron Men. Frederick the Great. Alexander. Storm Over Arnhem. B-17.

I've got a game of Tac Air going right now. The 6th Guards Tank Division is pushing its way through the 4th Jager Division. I have led German armor against overwhelming Soviet forces on the Eastern Front of WWII. I have stood on the deck of a British three-decker as she led a line of the most powerful vessels afloat against the French SOLs. I have flown B-17s over Germany, fighting off fighters and praying the bombs don't go off. I have faced down the vast Persian army of Darius. I have watched my bridgehead over the Rhine shrink as my paratroopers payed with their blood to hold it. And so many more...

Gettysburg. Best simulation definitely. but tedious as hell.

Played a couple SPI, i think, games.
- East is Red, based on 70's hypothetical warfare between Soviets and Red China, map centered on Manchuria.
- Sniper. fun beer and pretzels game-- wwii urban combat in which each counter represented one soldier.

Recently purchased Power Grid along with the robot expanson. Actually lost to the robots twice when I played me against 3 robots. Need to have a "fine" for burning fuel that has emisions - oil, coal, garbage(?). Wind and nuclear would not suffer any fines. I'll get the Korea/China expansion (ref Jones65) next.
Jon65 (112 D)

My friend has the robots, we've not played.

Civilization was an AH game, right? I am surprised no one has mentioned that.

The sequel, Age of Renaissance, was pretty sweet also.

"Wind and nuclear would not suffer any fines."

So no fines for when an earthquake triggers a tsunami and destroys your nuclear power plant? OR when things got tits up and you plant in a town of 50,000 goes critical like Chernobyl? Sorry, but nuclear may be cleaner when nothing occurs, but all it takes is one incident to wipe away all the good that one plant did by damaging the environment around it for decades, even centuries.
Jon65 (112 D)
23 Jul 13 UTC
Draug, we always joke whenever someone drops one of the nuke pieces off the table that that person should be fined for needing a nuke cleanup team to come in.
So I could see a small fine every time for oil and coal. Burning trash is recycling, technically, so I don't think there should be a pass for that. The EPA can give them a permit since the trash is being burned and not just dumped in a landfill. And then if anyone drops one of the nuke pieces they get slapped with a huge fine and then can't use their nuke plant that turn.

There was an AH game based on Zelazny's Nine Princes in Amber. Always wanted to get that but never did.
Hey Jon,

I looked at that tabletop episode with my wife. We'll be buying Star Trek settlers soon. Like I said she's a Star Trek fan :-)

CA,

Awesome! You'll have to let me know if it's actually worth buying. It's on my list of games to get, but I just haven't gotten around to it yet.
Yeah geek & sundry is having an off site set up for ComicCon and I am really hoping they do the.same for Dragoncon. I haven't seen any mention of Will Wheaton on the boards this year, but Felicia Day and the cast of the guild was there last year. I had never seen or heard of her until Dragoncon last year. My friends dragged me into the Dr. Horrible's Sing Along Blog screening. Then I introduced them to Munchkin. A month later they had found Table Top's Munchkin episode.

I'm getting excited this year, our group keeps growing. First my wife and her friend. Then they dragged me along. Then my friend and his daughter. And this year my niece and nephew. It's gonna rock:-)

What activist do you hate the worst
Activists of all political stripes are some of the most annoying and intelligence reducing people on earth. Name your most hated activist.

Right at the moment, I'm thinking Julian Assange. His pathological narcissism only serves to flimsily mask his profound idiocy.

Who the World Reads the Most: UNESCO'S Top 50 Authors (Shakespeare #3!) ;)
http://www.unesco.org/xtrans/bsstatexp.aspx?crit1L=5&nTyp=min&topN=50
Note this list doesn't count "group" works (see: The Torah, Koran, Bible, etc., which were either written over centuries or...erm, God, and putting HIM on the list just isn't fair, :p ) but still, for all our literature discussions, it's interesting to see who gets translated the most and thus, arguably, is the most widely-read (in one sense)...Shakespeare at #3 I can see, but some of these are ODD...

Draws
I have just started playing Diplomacy. I have noticed draws are very common. Games with nearly destroyed players drawing. Is that mind set of most players going into the game. "I'm going to draw". I tend to vote draw allot being new and wanting to just not die. Can threads add a poll. It would be fun to see how many players go for draw vs victory as a pregame goal.
