Life as a moderator
Just a little reading to get an understanding of the life of a moderator...
fortknox (2059 D)
05 Jul 12 UTC
I want the players to understand a little of what it is like being a mod.

We are players of the webdiplomacy site that show specific attributes and personality to help control the site. We enjoy the job, but there are two edges to the sword. We don't moderate anywhere, we moderate a site of a game where treachery, lying, stabbing, mixing words, negotiation, and diplomacy are the forte. When there is an authority making a decision you don't like, you can imagine the reaction we get. You guys know when to band together, when to pull someone out to lynch, when to switch sides, when to mince words, and when to back off…. well most of you know when to back off… ;)
We soon learn the rule of many hats:

The positives
Moderator hat: You investigate cheating allegations, you find people trying to ruin games. People put you in a higher standard than the rest. You are respected. Your words carry more weight. What you do is remembered more than most average users. People come to you to rescue them when they feel there is cheating. You can be a hero for sniffing out a cheater before major damage is done.

Player Hat: You enjoy the game, you play with several people, you joke around, you strategize.

Human Hat: You make friends, you joke around, you can handle each case differently because it involves different people and you can determine when there is a heavy violation and a minor one. You give people second chances, you empathize, you try to make the site better.

The negatives
Moderator Hat: You are always a moderator: you can't just be a player. Every game you play, everything that you are saying is watched by all players. Anything bad and it gets publicly announced for a lynching. If you make a mistake on a ruling or get overruled, it becomes fodder for the 'peanut gallery' to abuse you with. Every mistake is remembered so it can be brought up at your next big ruling. You competency is being questioned at every turn.

Player Hat: Lying in a game, a normal aspect, is questioned when it happens. You make enemies. You have enemies from games from before your moderator privileges were given. You have people asking for rulings inside a game for another game.

Human Hat: You make mistakes, you get frustrated, you lose your cool, you have extreme emotions, you can't get to everything in time. You have a real life, and that real life can affect your mood, you have bad days, you have good days in your real lie, then problems and issues and drama while modding sours your real life. You burn out, quickly, needing breaks, often.

These are just a few of the things we go through. I understand that you, as players, also go through all of the human and player hats, but by being a moderator, we are held to a higher standard. We toyed with the idea of having a "moderator" account so all official announcements would go through that, and we'd be regular players otherwise, but felt it was against our own multi-account rules. So when I tell a joke, it is a joke….that a mod told. If I ask someone to stop, some people think that I'm making an official demand as a mod and they are in trouble. I can make this pretty simple: Stuff on the forums is a suggestion (except when specifically and obviously dealing with moderator issues, like this email), stuff in a PM is usually a strong suggestion, and stuff you get in an email from the webmod account is an official message from the moderator group that you should take seriously. Hopefully you can tell when we are making a suggestion as a human and player vs a mod, but that line blurries. That is why we are held to a higher standard.

Abge likes to bring up what other sites are like. I'd suggest everyone join another forum that is strongly moderated and see what you can get away with. Most heavily moderated sites will ban you if you bitch about the management. We don't even close those threads. We want you to talk, we want you to moderate yourselves, we want this to be open. Our rules on the forum are very lax, though we do have specific ones, especially for games in progress to avoid unfair advantages in the game brought up. Keep that in mind.

I'm personally taking on an effort to have the whole mod team understand how to respect each request and player, regardless of how you guys handle yourselves. I know how easy it is to get frustrated and approach us angry. That same reason is why we sometimes burst out back at you, it is that same frustration. Some may not remember, but I've lost my cool multiple times (thankfully abge talked me down a lot of the times). I'm a trained college referee, so me losing my cool is very, very rare. I'm sure going through the divorce had something to do with it, but the point is that we are all just as human as you are.

We will try to get better. We always try to self-improve.

We hope you guys can start forgetting about some past mistakes and transgressions and help us make the site better instead of having this stand-off each time someone feels they have been wronged.

Anytime you feel there is something that wasn't moderated or ruled correctly, please email the moderator account with a request for an admin to look into the moderation and it will be re-reviewed by an admin then compared to the original ruling and determine if a change needs to be made. If your complaint is against an admin, you will have to contact kestas and have him look at it.
If your complaint is against kestas, deal with it or leave. The guy gave you all of this for free and owns it. He gets to make the rules. :P

Anyways, I hope this helps you see some stuff from our perspective and helps bridge the moderator/player gap. I'll be happy to answer questions as I see them, but again, in keeping with this email, I'm at work right now and have my kids this evening, so I will be busy from time to time and can't answer the questions right away at times.

I'd also appreciate it if there isn't 10293 replies before I can answer a question. You guys go on tangents and I'd really life to not have a lot of 'noise' in this thread so we can just discuss the matters at hand.

Thanks.

It's all good mate and 95% of the time you are spot on, but it is good fun to see forum members taking the piss out of the Mods, not in a nasty spiteful way but in a wind-up kind of a way. In saying that your outburst telling us about people cheating was pretty cool as well, funny and entertaining. Whatever responsibilities you have you're still part of the forum. I would love to know more about who got banned and what they did.

Personally I think the moderators do a great job at, like you said, not overmodding. Behind the scenes work is one thing, but I love being able to talk. That's big to me. I like to have freedoms to say what I want. Thanks for that.
Wait, what about moderator perks like weekends in Dubai with supermodels?

@THM
Those are moderators on Berlusconi's forum, an honest mistake.
fortknox (2059 D)

@THM: I may be withholding that information, and if you want one of those trips, I'd keep that info to yourself ;)

@ulytau: I have yet to abuse power. I've seen it happen, I've disciplined ones I've seen. It is a rarity, but if you feel it is happening, please report it to me (or kestas if you think I have).
fortknox (2059 D)

Or should I go with:
ts(?);dnr ulytau: I think moderator mistakes should result in banning of mods. I enjoy anarchy.

You shrink down what I want and spin it how you want, but you made a pretty serious accusation quickly without proof or substantiation. Thanks for proving some of what I've said about how some players view the mods.

Don't listen to FK. He's just trying to hide the fact that mods spend most of their time coming up with reasons to steal points from players to spend on blow and hookers. The real reason I "retired" was to go into rehab for all the addictions I gained while being an admin.

Yeah, can't think of any complaints I've had about any of the mods. Seems to be pretty well run. I've never actually complained about any player that I can remember, but I've not had any complaints about mods either.

Yeah I don't know if you noobies knew this but 500 D = a key of coke

@rokakoma - we put in as much as we can. you can easily spend six hours cleaning out a backlog in the inbox. a single case extends usually for three or four days, because you have to coax people to respond, but the actual cumulative time spent on one case probably equals about an hour or two.

Mods. You try to kill them with fire but they just use it to make more crack and then more of them spawn out of nowhere and have them hookers and you don't have any hookers and it makes you sad to not have any hookers and then they tell you to check your email but nothing's there and it drives you crazy because you wanna go outside to buy some bread but no you have to sit at your computer since you don't have mobile internet and that really sucks and then they dock Draugnar his points and so he DDOS the site but noone realizes it as he's so hardcore he actually DDOS the reality and it lags so hard that the site is down when everyone is in stasis or some bubble because of the lag which is pretty Sleeping Rose-like situation but there's no prince to kiss you just Draugnar playing poker and riding his lawn tractor until he gets bored and fixes the spacetime latency and stuff and then the crack is ready and you're out of fire so you buy a dog but the mods are still there and they haunt you but never do anything just haunt you like you turn your back and they're there but then you turn around and no one's there which is actually really scary if you think about it for a while like I do before I go to sleep and they are basically invincible which is why Chuck Norris is always afraid of ban when he logs in since everyone does what he wants ingame so that he doesn't come and roundhouse kick them in their kitchen when they cook some chicken soup but that also means his games looks like a rampant multi on the loose which is why Chuck Norris fears the banhammer but what he can do he can't just lose that would ruin his street cred and you don't want to lose your street cred when you're Chuck Norris, you might do that when you're someone else though and then there are those discussions which are self-moderated which is sooo smart from the mods because it frees their time to finish that hooker situation that's time management par excellence but you kinda wonder why they are called mods when they do not moderate which is where the word mod comes from after all but you don't think about it too hard otherwise they could haunt you again which is bad, crack is bad but that doesn't help in front of the court since you tried to kill them with fire which means you helped them to make the crack in the first place and that's all that matters also the jury is batshit crazy and the judge is afraid of getting banned he just got his win/draw percentage over 60% and he doesn't want to start another account because that's multiing and the jury is metagaming because they want to sentence you because of your coloured socks and they don't like those because they like grey ones in their pink crocs which is pretty horrible and you tell them which isn't smart and you should've never done it in the first place but vivamus a quam et nunc ornare ornare et eu neque fusce blandit condimentum odio vitae placerat morbi dignissim posuere est in sodales vivamus varius pellentesque metus eu accumsan donec bibendum pretium iaculis in eget nulla lacus nam ullamcorper porta ante a consequat sed nec nibh erat phasellus nec mi nisl vitae posuere ante duis sit amet sem ut nisi rhoncus dapibus sed nec dolor id lectus congue scelerisque vitae id lectus donec ut lorem sed felis bibendum convallis eget sed eros in spite of the rain and then the FEDs are on mods' point payroll they get 35diplopoints for solving one problem and thats like messy solving not solving a sudoku or kakuro and then they say they will be lenient but they will not be they never are they just like to lie because it's Diplomacy that's kinda the point of all the hassle although you might just adjust the truth a little and then backstab but that won't save you because they still have some crack left and you can't take an SC full of crack that's quite an offence and could force you to disband all your fleets which were charged of convoying crack from Clyde to Brest so you dump the crack in Aegean and hope the mods won't notice but then the Somali pirates steal the crack which is also good because pirates on crack are soooo awesome and leave you alone unlike the mods who never leave you alone not even when you have just one army in Syria and tons of crack underwater unless Davy Jones is there together with Count Crackula who is mostly harmless but might mug you when he needs some quick buck for his fix but that's not some superpower or even power he just points his dagger at you and yells something about points-for-crack programme and you believe him because he's Crackula and those never lie unless it's some cosplaying weirdo then you might be in trouble but those can be easily kicked in the nuts on the other hand so all in all it's a manageable situation unless the mods show up and finally send that email where they tell you there was no infraction and everything's fine but alas it's not otherwise you wouldn't feel that strange feeling where you think they're after you they always are don't think they don't have time for you they have that's why they're not moderating the forums so that they would have more time for stalking you and being there when they're not there when you think it's stalemated but then Turkey went crazy and kept pushing so Austria threw the game but then the mods might pause and never unpause it again because they're just so badass also they never do that either because it would be too obvious and too much work honestly which is something you can't afford when you have crack and hookers waiting and they're like really lusty this time and the moderator's hat is a great fetish I heard not that I watch those parties streamed online like some loser I have better things to do like checking my email for further messages about that mysterious infraction although no one initiated the process or investigates further but you have to check it anyway because you don't want to end up like Josef K. but that's how you will end up anyway because they are the mods and you are not so you will never know anything despite constantly checking everything trying to get into the loop but never being quite there's it's like some semi-loop a frontflip sommersault or something and you cannot jump because Chuck Norris never taught you although you are sometimes checking the email together because he's also afraid everyone's afraid even the mods are afraid because they unleashed a monster upon themselves themselves and it's like a jack-in-a-box it just pops out and it's there and then it is kinda awkward but again it's not thatwasawkward it just sits in the air like an eggfart but then you are petrified because what if all those messages ended in spam and got somehow deleted by accident you could be already screwed despite taking every possible precaution none if which was apparently enough because you wouldn't be screwed would you no you would be not however not all is lost you still have your vdip account although who will play classic there with you haha that's dumb classic on vdip you might as well take a dump in a dumb dump humpty dumpty which is equally likely not zero percent but pretty similar probability as far as I can tell so long story short the mods are awesome never had any problems with them never even had to deal with them because I demand justice and I serve justice so we're cool just if they could stop being there when they are not there that would be nice thanks for your time see ya.

Players as well as Moderators are required to understand the Ethics of the role,

his "player hat w human frailties"
shouldn't this be in the Religious gags section ???

Why is King James' God So "Familiar" When He's...Not?
As I've said, I'm reading my way through the KJ Bible (KJ because you can't fully hope to ever be a Man of Letters like I hope to be someday without reading the Bible, like it or not, and the KJ version has had the biggest impact on English Literature) and it struck me partway through "Exodus"--OT, almighty, intimidating God speaks using "thou," but that'd be the INFORMAL version grammatically in James'/Shakespeare's day...but the OT God is anything BUT familiar and informal...?
