Anyone read him? His Strategy is a very good read and makes a lot of sense. I know people like Mearsheimer loathe him, but I think he has a lot to say, especially about having limited objectives, that can inform today's defense policies. I'd put him right up there with Jomini's Summary of the Art of War.

Why is King James' God So "Familiar" When He's...Not?
As I've said, I'm reading my way through the KJ Bible (KJ because you can't fully hope to ever be a Man of Letters like I hope to be someday without reading the Bible, like it or not, and the KJ version has had the biggest impact on English Literature) and it struck me partway through "Exodus"--OT, almighty, intimidating God speaks using "thou," but that'd be the INFORMAL version grammatically in James'/Shakespeare's day...but the OT God is anything BUT familiar and informal...?

ISLAMIC THUGS DESTROY 15TH CENTURY MUSLIM SHRINES IN AFRICA
Timbuctoo, once regarded as equal to Cambridge or Oxford as a centre of Learning. Now Islamic thugs are running about destroying shrines and other things of great "Islamic" cultural and historical significance, killing, raping and looting

Olympic Torch relay
boring or what!
Balaran (0 DX)
05 Jul 12 UTC
I suppose I should say that I am fortunate enough to have the Olympic torch relay coming right past my front door this morning. However I i amazed that so many people have turned out and are sitting by the kerb a full hour before the woman (a local tri-athlete) is going to jog passed. Some seem to have come with deck chairs, picnics and all sorts of things to bang, rattle and shake.

I just want one person to agree with me that this is being massively over enthused about, then I wont feel quite so much like a boring middle aged misery guts, who has the onset of grumpy old man syndrome.

(Americans need not answer, as you get excited about taking a crap)

Booooring.
Balaran (0 DX)

Having now witnessed this spectacle I can say with some authority that it is a total waste of time. My 5 year old son joined in with the thousands of people lining the route and when the torch barer run passed, and everyone then went home, he burst into tears with disappointment. "I wanted it to be better" he said. It is after all nothing more than a person jogging with a torch in their hand! So why the hysteria?
ODaly (236 D)
05 Jul 12 UTC
Because it's tradition, dammit. Everyone's gotta get excited about tradition (even one started by the Third Reich).
Draugnar (0 DX)
05 Jul 12 UTC
@Balaran - It's not about the excitement of that specific moment, but about the fact that the fire supposedly came from Olympia, Greece where it is lit by the sun in a parabolic mirror and has been passed from runner to runner and torch to torch the entire distance, connecting the modern Olympic games with the ancient Greek Olympic games through the tradition.

I took a fairly large crap last night and then launched some fireworks in its honor. It was exciting!
Larfinboy (0 DX)

@2ndwhiteline. Can you be a little more descriptive?

@Draugnar The damn flame has gone out on a number of occasions. Something to do with the English weather I think.
Tolstoy (1962 D)
05 Jul 12 UTC
How did they get the flame across the English Channel? Did someone have to swim it over? Because a boat or airplane ride seems like cheating to me.
Pete U (293 D)

I went to see it on Tuesday. I thought th whole thing was great. Loads of people getting together to share in a once in a lifetime event. Chatting to strangers, lots of happy kids.
Draugnar (0 DX)
05 Jul 12 UTC
@Larfin - Yes, I know. In fact some protesters actually distinguished it last year (in France I bleieve) and were arrested. It's symbolic. Interestingly, though, in the 80s they had two flames that were done for the Winter olympics (84 IIRC) and the torch was to originally be lit b y a merging of the two (one from Greece, one from the nrodik home of the winter sports) but they decided to just use the Greek flame to light the torch.
Draugnar (0 DX)

@Tolstoy - They fly across oceans. You think the channel is a challenge? Try the Atlantic to get to Salt Lake City, Lake Placid, etc.
Octavious (2701 D)
05 Jul 12 UTC
@ Tolstoy: They gave the flame to Beckham and he floated it over the sea on a cloud of smug.

To be honest though the torch carrying lark has been a huge success. Quite why so many people have got so much excitement and happiness out of it is beyond me, but it is clear that they have and that has to be a good thing.

I think it's disturbing that your son cries over the absence of joy.
Draugnar (0 DX)

The torch carry is like the parade before the homecoming game. It pumps people up and gets interest in the games going and that is a good thing for the games and the athletes involved. Sure, it is also a commercial endeavor, but in the end, McDonald's and Microsoft aren't the ones with the gold medals around their necks.
Carrdomonation (100 D)

i dont think anyone but americans get the homecoming referance..

The torch relay is like the parade before the big sporting event. K?
It is boring to watch. would i go? yes, because it is a world wide tradition.
Maniac (189 D(B))
06 Jul 12 UTC
I've had the dubious pleasure of seeing the torch, I stood in the rain for two hours with my family because my son's twelve-year old classmate was a bearer. We were even cheering the police escorts that went by up to an hour before the bearer. Thankfully it is only likely to be in the uk once in my lifetime.

If you think watching the torch is boring spare a thought for Londoners wo will be paying for he games for many years to come.
Octavious (2701 D)
06 Jul 12 UTC
Would not the big parade at the opening ceremony be a tad more like a parade before the sporting event?

@ Maniac
I took your advice and thought for a moment about the poor wee emmets having to pay for the games for years. It made me feel all warm and fuzzy inside :D
Larfinboy (0 DX)
06 Jul 12 UTC
@ Octavious Emmets hey! What part of Cornwall are you from?

Londoner paying for the games? I thought we had all been told that the Olympics was a real money spinner for London ;)
Draugnar (0 DX)
06 Jul 12 UTC
@Oct - no the opening ceremony parade is more akin to the entrance of the competitors at the big sporting event. They just do a hell of a lot more pomp and circumstance to introduce the athletes.

So Help Me God...Naw--So Help Me WebDip Physicists, What's Higgs-Boson About?
Leaving that "God Particle" title alone--and if anyone brings God into THIS thread...shame on you, we have a debate coming up, for once, let's have a discussion sans the rhetoric, eh?--can any of our brilliant scientists here explain this? I've heard of it, and apparently it's important, but...what's it all mean, this particle...why would it hep give proof of...things? (Note my very technical jargon there.) ;)

Which subjects are sacred?
Zmaj raised an interesting point. We can slander and insult and wrestle and mock politics and religion without end, but as soon as someone starts in on personal histories and former cheating cases, it becomes very hush hush and people start tiptoeing around. Not that I disagree necessarily, but what makes personal history and former cheating cases et al. more taboo than politics and religion, the latter of which is supposedly deeply personal?
