Teaching my brother how to play
Hi,
I'm thinking of introducing my little brother to diplomacy so I'd like to set up a game for him to learn in. I won't play so I can give him advice. I'm thinking low pot, 48hrs, WTA. Any takers?
Diplomat33 (243 D(B))
06 Feb 12 UTC
Well maybe but DO NOT let him have interactions with the forums. If he is that young. Remember "the congo" thread and things like that? How old is he?

Also, there was a word doc. that someone made about openings strategy and the winning percentages from each one. Does anyone know who it was that made it and how I can get my hands on it again?

I would do that Yonni.

I think the doc that you're referring to is Tru Ninja's, I'll try to find a link. I have too many games right now, or I would join.

Right, I think it was his.

There are quite a lot of great diplomacy strategy and tactics articles online. This website provides quite a nice archive:

if you want to show your brother how to play the game,
may I suggest that you select the Player page for a very good player,
eg MadMarx, and look through his previous games, selecting games
where he has won, and they will show the last move "map"page,
but at the bottom of the page in Archives, select maps, let it load,
then scroll down to the "1901 spring" map and then by moving "up"
through each move you can discuss the game(s) with your brother

that way you can show him & discuss strategy choices,
and the tactical implementation of strategy,

it's a good way to learn things,
eg when playing England of avoiding the mistake of building too many fleets
and not enough armies
that's something I picked up from looking at another player's winning game with
England where this chappie won the game with only two fleets for the early part,
he didn't build a 3rd fleet until he had about 8 to 10 sc's,
it was a real eye opener for me, he would just build a new army for each new sc
and very effectively convoy his new armies to Europe

good luck
ghug (5068 D(B))
07 Feb 12 UTC
@MajorMitchell that's a good idea, but I don't think MadMarx is the best choice for that. Marx wins games nearly entirely through his diplomacy, his tactics are good enough to carry him the rest of the way, but there are better players to look at for those things. I would suggest a strong gunboater (Lando, The Czech, Barn3tt, Sargmacher, etc.).

I can't play, but want to pat you on the back, Yonni, for teaching the best way. Not playing, helping over the shoulder... so much nicer than people trying to teach through meta-playing in a game with their student... :D

I'll join. I would also like to recommend having your brother take a look at some stalemate line articles. Checking those out and learning the board dynamics helped me a lot in understanding what to aim for post 1902.

South American World Cup Team
So, any south american interested to play in the World Cup? We have to defend our title:
I think so far we have me, JesusPetry (both brasilians) and Sargmacher (??) interested.
Of course, preference will be given for Rubetok and Xapi, that played in the last edition, but they aren´t around for a while.

What is your favorite nation in World?
So, I've come to really like the World variant. I love the unpredictability that comes with having 17 players, the cross-global alliances that are made and broken. I also like the variety to be found in the positions and unit compositions of each nation.

What is your favorite nation, and why? This could the nation you most like to play, or one that you simply like to root for. After all, I'm sure that few of us have actually played as all 17!

Gunboat for Dummies
Alright, I've had it. Live gunboats are getting disappointingly mediocre, and populated with lots of players not moving very cleverly. This thread is for more experience gunboat players to post tips, ideas, do's and don'ts of sound gunboat play.

Diplomacy & Friendship
The basis of a friendship is trust; however, Diplomacy requires ample lying and backstabbing. I am often concerned that when I introduce a friend to the game, he (LBH, there aren't many female players) will expect me to ally or to be trustworthy. How have you addressed this split between expectations?

Question: moving troops clashing aganist each other
Greetings all!
A friend of mine in a game moved from Bulgaria to Romania one unit, and another from Romania to Bulgaria (both provinces are his). And they bounced back instead of exchanging places! Any idea why? This is the game: http://webdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=78910&msgCountryID=6

Dear all, we need a replacement China, as Baskineli retired from the site due to RL. gameID=73479 China is in a good position and it has been a fun game so far. The world game has some good players in it. PM me if you're interested, so we can arrange with the mods and Baskin, or join if China really CDs.
