How to Get People to do What YOU Want
Diplomats fall into different categories or archetypes. Some are bossy and curmudgeonly. Some are vague and try to stay neutral toward everybody. Some are pushovers (the best allies of course!). And some are true diplomats. There is a lot to say on this topic and I hope to get a lot of participation in this thread, but I'd like to start with a couple pointers that have served me well:

Luck in diplomacy.
I found a case of luck. In gunboat, you have 2 SCs open, and can move to one, the opponent can as well. You will either get in one or bounce. 50-50 chance of each. Luck is involved.

Out-Guessing Your Opponent
Oftentimes you are presented with difficult tactical decisions. Consider a move where you could take a SC two different ways. Your opponent can defend against either move successfully, but not both. Which move do you choose?

I miss King Atom
Now that he's gone, I kind of miss him. Though his comments were often inane and nonsensical, there was a sort of clarity of thought to them that, in retrospect... I really respect. You might even call it a kind of genius? Come back to us, KA!

gameID=71352 - everyone determined to submit orders in time and not to leave in the first turn just 'cause Austria sucks - is welcome to join the game. However, volunteers from the late "Why so Anonymous?" game are most likely to be given priority (pacta sunt servanda). But I think we will have some free seats.

unsportive behaviour
@ Splitdiplomat userID=36887 to withdraw your draw vote seconds before a CD while the rest also votes draw, only because you came out of the turn well is very unsportive behaviour (at least in my eyes).

So it is with regret i see you reached the end of the game while i did my best to ensure you would never reach it.

@ the rest, how would you think about something like it?

Unsporting, or Unsportsmanlike.

Unsportive is not a word.

but my question is, am i the only one getting mad by this kind of behaviour? Because frankly, i was giving orders without caring because it was just a matter of counting out the time of Turkey leaving. And while i thought it was very visible what i was doing, (trying to force Germany to draw) the other players just continued.

Out of curiosity what is your native language?

I would agree that withdrawing the draw vote was unsportsmanlike, however you were already in 1904 when the CD happened. At that point the game is both on GR, and is valid, you've already played out enough of the game for a CD of three centre power to be not a huge deal. Particularly in that position.

Second a draw because someone CD's in 1904. Give me a break. I wouldn't accept a 1904 draw for that, unless I had no alternative. If a major power cd's cancel, if you need it to end cancel. But a minor power cd, in a live game, either play it out or cancel.
damian (675 D)

Ah you're talking about Turkey, not England. Eh. Important event. I'd consider cancelling, or if there were only a few powers left 3 or 4 I might draw. Still 1905 the game was well underway.
Victorious (768 D)

the cd of England was not that big because he was already defeated when he was gone. And nobody voted draw so everybody agreed about that. But the fact he voted draw already is the thing that mades me mad. I dont think your after 1903 argument is valid because of that. And Turkey was a very important ally for me.

But more irritating, i already had kind of the same experience with the same player some time ago. That game, he was russia and England CD's in 1901 and germany in 1902 gameID=65132. and yet again, he was the only player not wanting to draw.

BTW, my native language is Dutch

I agree its infuriating. That it's rude to play on just because things turn out your way. However I'm also saying that if you feel it effects the game that much it shouldn't be drawn. It should be cancelled. Unless a draw was the inevitable result anyway. Ie a stalemate had already been set up.

Drawing at that point is as much a perversion of the game as playing on is.

Its certainly irritating however. I don't disagree. Particularly when an important power gets canned.

In the other, circumstance. Against I would say that game should have been cancelled. CD's in 01 are ridiculous. Though some other people are fond of the its part of he live game experience argument. I think CD in the first two years means cancel, after that, cancel or play on. Draw if it really makes sense.

Nifty. I kinda thought some of the grammar structure looked germanic. I'm in the process of learning Norwegian, which shares some characteristics.

I disagree with you guys. I'll vote draw if its to my advantage to vote draw... I'll cancel it at the last second also if that's to my advantage. Anyways, it looks like it didn't do him any good anyways.

I find it hard to believe anyone with "diplomat" in their name would do anything even remotely wrong! :-P :-)
Victorious (768 D)

@ damian, i would have voted cancel if the rest had done so, just like i offered it the secons example.

@ Yellowjacket, so you would have pushed for the win, even if you would gain it because of some random luck it was not your ally who left? i dont want to wast my time playing a screwed game.

i made sure it would not do him good, but sadly, it was not good for me either

Victorious: of course! I've said before that quitting/frustration/luck is very much a part of the game if you're going to buy in for 31. Play for more and the noobs can't join, and you don't risk that. Play for little and you have no choice but to take advantage of stupidity wherever you can. The times that you can't capitalize you just have to remember that the more idiots in play, the better the chances of you going home with a solo, and it'll play to your advantage next time.

Should I be suspicious? Multi theoretical question
When a player enter orders not to move during two turns, and then CD, just in time for another player to encircle him and grasp all of his centers, should I be suspicious of multi or that's the kind of thing that happens all the time?

Of course I won't point to any specific game, as I wouldn't want to make cheating accusations in the forum. All I want is your oppinion as wether I should bother the mods should that occurr or it's a common situation.
