How to Get People to do What YOU Want
Diplomats fall into different categories or archetypes. Some are bossy and curmudgeonly. Some are vague and try to stay neutral toward everybody. Some are pushovers (the best allies of course!). And some are true diplomats. There is a lot to say on this topic and I hope to get a lot of participation in this thread, but I'd like to start with a couple pointers that have served me well:

Luck in diplomacy.
I found a case of luck. In gunboat, you have 2 SCs open, and can move to one, the opponent can as well. You will either get in one or bounce. 50-50 chance of each. Luck is involved.

Out-Guessing Your Opponent
Oftentimes you are presented with difficult tactical decisions. Consider a move where you could take a SC two different ways. Your opponent can defend against either move successfully, but not both. Which move do you choose?

Now that he's gone, I kind of miss him. Though his comments were often inane and nonsensical, there was a sort of clarity of thought to them that, in retrospect... I really respect. You might even call it a kind of genius? Come back to us, KA!

Should I be suspicious? Multi theoretical question
When a player enter orders not to move during two turns, and then CD, just in time for another player to encircle him and grasp all of his centers, should I be suspicious of multi or that's the kind of thing that happens all the time?

Of course I won't point to any specific game, as I wouldn't want to make cheating accusations in the forum. All I want is your oppinion as wether I should bother the mods should that occurr or it's a common situation.

Anyone here a star trek fan and would like to play a game entirely in klingon?
We could play in klingon if anyone finds a good online translator. What fun it would be!
TBroadley (178 D)

I'm a ST fan, but I think that would just add a meaningless layer of complexity and infinite possibilities for miscommunication. Better to have each player impersonate a ST species.

I know a couple good sims people could be apart of. Depending on whether you like play by board, sms, or email.
Obi - You missed off a few:- Gorn, Lyran, Tholian, Hydran, Kzinti, Wynn, ISC. You could even add Orion at a stretch.

That brings us to 12...

*Tholian
Races from the 3 ST:TOS series plus ST:TCS (The Animated Series)

United Federation of Planets,
Klingon
Romulan
Gorn
Tholian
Kzinti (see below)
Lyran
Hydran
Orion
Wynn
Inter Stellar Concordium (ISC)

Add in the "new" powers from ST:TNG,
Cardasian
Ferengi
Borg
Breen

That's 15, so we need two more for a World game...

The Kzinti are an aggressive, carnivorous species from Larry Niven's "Known Space" future history. Niven was asked to modify a KS story "The Soft Weapon" into a ST;TAS episode "The Slaver Weapon" and thereby introduced the Kzinti to the Star trek universe. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Slaver_Weapon. The Kzinti are a major race in the excellent board game Star Fleet Battles.

My list of 17 would be...

Human
Klingon
Romulan
Cardasian
Ferengi
Borg

Vulcan
Bajoran
The Marquis (!)
Betazoid
The Dominion
Trill
Nausicaan
The Q
Orion Syndicate
Tholian
Orion Slave Girls

Really surprised some of the above haven't already been mentioned.

Sargmacher (0 DX)
31 Oct 11 UTC
To be honest though, barring the main 6 + Vulcans, it would be hard to create a unique characterisation for most of the races. It might be better in such a game to pick a character?
Diplomat33 (243 D(B))
31 Oct 11 UTC
the Orion Slave Girls might rule the world!
obiwanobiwan (248 D)
31 Oct 11 UTC
Replace one of the Orions with the Gorn, they HAVE to be in (and two Orio0ns are confusing and redundant...KEEP THE SLAVE GIRLS!) ;)

Nice call including the Maquis and Dominion...

But no way can the Q be involved--

The game would be over in the snap of a finger! :O

I agree, picking a character would work well...

For #17...how about the Xindi, or if we're into a real challenge...seperate the Breen out and have them give garble-talk...it'd almost be like playing gunboat! LOL
obiwanobiwan (248 D)
31 Oct 11 UTC
OH!

Never mind, SpeakerToAliens is right...the Andorians have to be in there!

Put Andorians and Gorn in, adn take the Orion Syndicate--leave the Girls, I say!--and the Q--way too powerful and impractical--out, and this could be fun.
Sargmacher (0 DX)

@Obi: I was the one who suggest Andorians - not SToAliens?
Sargmacher (0 DX)

One of my favourite alien races was Species 8472. I always think it's a shame they were so undeveloped.
obiwanobiwan (248 D)
01 Nov 11 UTC
sorry sarge
@Sarqmacher - Andorians weren't a playable race in SFB. Though they were a major player in Archer's time, by Kirk's time they were a minor species, more a part of the Orion Traders/Pirates group than the Federation.

I agree you couldn't have the Q, they'd be just too powerful. Nor could you have, for the same reasons, the Thasians, Trelane's species, Talosians, Andromedans, Metrons, etc., basically anyone who could "say a magic word and make everyone disappear.")
Draugnar (0 DX)
01 Nov 11 UTC
Didn't one of the novels make it clear that the Trelane was actually a member of the Q continuum?
Mafialligator (239 D)
01 Nov 11 UTC
But novels are "Non-canon". To be canon in Star Trek something has to have appeared onscreen in a movie or a TV show....or so I've heard. Not that I've actually engaged in long pointless internet debates about this stuff...

(I actually haven't, I just happen to know that)
Draugnar (0 DX)
01 Nov 11 UTC
Interesting results from my web research. It seems Trelane, being a child, could not have ever been a Q. The Q had never had children and Q's decision to have one in "The Q and the Grey" means Trelane couldn't have been a child (I suppose, like Athena, Q sprung from the head of Q fully grown when they were Qirthed).

Also, Trelane used technology to augment his powers and was woefully uninformed as to the nature of the taste of food, heat from a fireplace, or even the appearance and mannerisms of the 22nd century, where as Q never needed any technology nor had any limitations or gaps in his knowledge.

zakdorn would be brilliant at diplomacy!!!

and what about the sheliak?
Sargmacher (0 DX)
01 Nov 11 UTC
Wow. It's turned rather nerdy. I thought it was more to find 17 'identities' so that everyone could play as a fun Star Trek identity/persona. The Q would be a fun one to play. It doesn't matter if the Q are omnipotent - obviously that would not extend to a game of Diplomacy.

To say you couldn't have the Q in a game of Star Trek themed game of Diplomacy because they are "too powerful" in the Star Trek universe is ridiculous on so many levels. The whole idea is designed for fun - not to perfectly mirror the universe of Star Trek.
Sargmacher (0 DX)

Haha, very funny and true ulytau - so funny that people are already mimicing you.
Draugnar (0 DX)

The mimicry was to add another nerdy reference - The Princess Bride - to the mix. :-)
ulytau (541 D)

We had some lulz potential in the chain of Star Trek thread turning nerdy? comments and you ruthlessly stopped it, Sarg! But thanks for the thumbs up :)

It seems my Nerd2NORP transformation is going well since I didn't got Draug's refference! I also cut on my weekly dose of lurking. Stopped buying tech magazines as well. Maybe one day, I'll be able to unchain myself from Pokémon and live happily ever after. One can always hope.

As a sidenote, I actually mistook Star Trek for Star Wars the other day in front of my Trekkie friends. That was also the last time I saw them. Do you Trekkies ever forgive?

Tng was my fav series as I grew up with it. A fleet of 9 cloaked warbirds could hammer a Borg cube easily :)
Sargmacher (0 DX)
02 Nov 11 UTC
Ha, yeah Romulan ships had amazing advantages in that game. I loved the way it brought Sid Meier's Civilization into a Star Trek reality - so much fun, wasted so many hours on that game - and so much money as the Federation trying to appease the Antedeans!
"The Q would be a fun one to play. It doesn't matter if the Q are omnipotent - obviously that would not extend to a game of Diplomacy. " - If Kestas joined in he could be Q 'cos he could change anything in the game.
