Somehow the English do not talk the entire game and French and him are allies? No talking to any other player for 2 hours? But somehow has this great relatinship with France. France tells me he will talk to England to discuss a 3 way draw. Yeah right He's playing both countries.

Does anybody recognise the film this comes from?
I saw this in a film long ago and, being the father of daughters, decided to remember it, but I can't remember which film it's from. Does anybody recognise it?

Scene:Man meeting daughter's new boyfriend for the first time:-
"Remember this: I own a shotgun and a shovel and there's 300 acres of woodland behind the house... soft, loamy, soil... rich, earthy, smells..."

What to do when detecting cheater in anonymous/no ingame message games?
I just want to know how to handle if 2 team players join a anonymous/no-ingame message game.

Is there any way to prevent people doing such stupid things or are there any consequences for them?

Any statistical wizards here?
I've always been poor at methods. I'm trying to analyze a pooled time series of various countries to see the effects of war/militarized disputes on state strength (as measured by taxation, institutional 'coherence', military spending, military personnel and some other factors). Any clue as to how to do to do a panel-corrected standard error procedure on a program like R or Stata?

Each round, add one point to your favorite variant, and subtract one from your least favorite. When a variant runs out of points, it's eliminated. When you post, put a (+1) and a (-1) next to the ones you change, so it's easier to follow.

I just finished reading "Why the west rules for now" by Ian Morris. And now (continuing with the theme of historical determinism) I am about to start "The next 100 years" by George Freeman. He predicts Poland, Turkey and Japan will become super-powers (and maybe Mexico also).

Can a mod please check the webdipmod email?
I have sent a multi accusation there that needs swift action. The cheating is so obvious by the players' names, but the turn runs soon and I don't want the game destroyed by a cheat. I'm doing too well in it.
the text reads:

Dear Mod,

WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH

Sincerely,

I won't post the game or the names here. That is uncool. But trust me SantaClausowitless, the names are so obvious and the "new" account was created early this morning with the sole purpose of taking over a CD.

Draug: If it's the game I think you're referring to, don't 15 NMRs out of 35 possible orders (plus one set of orders that is so moronic it might as well have been an NMR) mean the game is already destroyed? Give it up, man!

@FatherSnitch. Yes and I took over a great position at a hefty premium. But I can live with all the NMRs and CDs. I can't live with a cheat. If the game is cancelled, I'm fine with that.
Draugnar (0 DX)
24 Feb 11 UTC
Ya know, I can live with draugsnore. When I put you to sleep with my mundane moves and longwinded press, that's when I strike and decimate your home SCs. But SantaClausowitless indicates you couldn't pull a stab off on a CD nation. ;-)

For what it's worth, I think it was a new player who was tempted and gave in. If it turns out I'm right, just banning the new account and a stern warning to the player is fine by me. Maybe I'm mellowing in my old age as last month I would have been all "BAN HIM!" like smiley.
Draugner - stop posting cheating accusations in the forum.

You meltdown after every person does it. So to go and do this is pretty hypocritical.

Would be interesting considering i have the same number of wins as you despite playing less than a third of the games you have ;)
Draugnar (0 DX)

And you play almost exclusively live games which a fraught with CDs plus you play almost exclusively PPSC, which rewards the strong second. Play WTA 24 hour or more turns against the top players on this site like I do and you'll see you survives and defeats go way up, where as I'll continue to play those games and keep getting draws with the occassional win. Apples to oranges my friend. Stop playing easy to win games.
24 hour full press games against competent players are much easier to succeed in than grab bag live games, imho.
Tom Bombadil (4023 D(G))
24 Feb 11 UTC
Whats your reasoning behind that Lando?
Live games tend to be full of new players. New players tend to behave irrationally. I find it much harder to negotiate with players who don't fully understand the game. Plus there is the CD factor which benefits players randomly.
Tom Bombadil (4023 D(G))
24 Feb 11 UTC
I suppose I can agree with that. Non-live games are an easy way to pump your draw stats. I think its probably a bit easier to get a win in a live game though.
I will agree with that. The random CDs/incompetent neighbours will benefit everyone sometime sif they play enough.

But non-live press games end up drawn quite a bit.
Draugnar (0 DX)
24 Feb 11 UTC
But winning a PPSC is, without a doubt, easier than winning a WTA. All two most recent wins were in PPSC. So I'm not just talking out my ass. It is easier to manipulate players into a strong second when they know they will still get points.

And new players may be less predictable, but they can also be more easily manipulated.

As far as NMRs/CDs affecting the game, you are just as likely to benefit from one of the CDs as to be disadvantaged by it, so that's a wash.
Draugnar (0 DX)
24 Feb 11 UTC
All two *of my* most recent wins...
I stand by my comments by they apply for me more than anything.

I have started playing WTA 24hr+ press games recently. My opponents abillities have been ranged (but generally good) and I am finding them way easier than some random live press game.
Draugnar (0 DX)
24 Feb 11 UTC
Easier to win? I find that highly dubious.
Draugnar (0 DX)
24 Feb 11 UTC
And every game on your first page of games (from newest to oldest) is a live game.
You're talking to me, Draug? Yes my first page is all live games. All of my non-live games are either older than that or anonymous.
Frank (100 D)
24 Feb 11 UTC
Wow, Draug, this is incredibly hypocritical. Your post is identical to the normal cheating accusation because anyone can check your profile and figure out what game and players you are talking about immediately. And you constantly rail against those who post accusations. If all you really wanted to do was make sure the mods checked their email, you could just pm them pretty easily.

Also that game should be cancelled anyway due to all the NMRs and stuff. And why would an experienced and talented player such as yourself even join a game like that in the first place?
Kingdroid (219 D)
24 Feb 11 UTC
Agreed about PPSC. I got my first win just recently because of the 'strong second' mentality.
Ummm... I won a WTA game yesterday, and the reason i havnt won many long term games is because my long term games are still ongoing. And live games may have CDs but they also have their own challenges to win. Try planning, communicating and entering in 10 commands in 5 minutes
Draugnar (0 DX)
24 Feb 11 UTC
@Frank - I really was just trying to get a mods attention to check their email. I wish it had been an anonymous game so it wouldn't have been deducible. And your, right, I shouldn't have included even the little bit of info I did. That was wrong of me.

The lot of you need to stop being so stuck up about everything.

It wasn't a cheating accusation post. So stop waving your virtual dicks in everyone's face and calling things out just so you can feel like your better then others.

We don't post cheating accusations on the forum for a reason, so we aren't slandering names. Draug didn't do that so just drop the issue. It makes the lot of you look like a bunch of egotistical jerks.
Draugnar (0 DX)
24 Feb 11 UTC
Thanks, damian, but Frank was right in that I should not have given out so much information that a simple look at my profile told them which game it was.
damian (675 D)
24 Feb 11 UTC
I can understand the point. My rant just happened to be placed hear because I'm sick of seeing people waving "rules" in other peoples faces any time they talk. Like it makes them better or something.

They aren't official rules, they are instead based on courtesy and respect for other players. So what said if you need to bring them up you bring them up in a way that is courteous to other players. I don't care if you think your being funny by brining something up. If you feel someone has erred on the side of being discourteous remind them politely don't go jumping down there throat. They aren't hard and fast rules either so err on the side of not worrying about it too much.

So what if someone happened to mention that they wanted people to ready orders in a gunboat, it's not going to effect that game that much.

Whatever a person just asked the mods to check there email no need to go jumping down his throat about it.

It's not clever it's just being a dick. Remember kiddies, being a dick, it's just not cool.

(Yes I know I'm a hypocrite. What the hell, call me out on it and I'll just ignore you. Just chill out. )
Draugnar (0 DX)
24 Feb 11 UTC
Well, Frank was just calling me on it because I have been known to jump down n00bs throats who call people out on the forum as cheats when the n00b just doesn't know how gunboat works and how you can signal your intent with your moves. So I got what I deserved and I may even deserve a bit more. Hard to say that.

What Draug says is true. Good on you Draug for admitting it (we are only human). Although I must admit that this thread gave me a laugh.
damian (675 D)
24 Feb 11 UTC
Again I will reiterate. Posted this here because this is the most recent example. I'm not judging whether you deserved it or not.

I do find this whole jumping down throats thing really annoying, and unnecessary. Much more is accomplished by just asking politely. I know I often intentionally spite people who jump down others throats by doing just what they asked people not to do.
damian (675 D)
24 Feb 11 UTC
I was just pointing it out in hopes of changing some peoples mind and making them reconsider methods. Hopefully you take it to heart. Or some such.
Maniac (184 D(B))
24 Feb 11 UTC
I hesitate to raise this point because I am well aware that we have debated forum accussations before, but the rules state that.....

4. Do not use the software or moderators as a diplomacy tactic

Lying is fine in Diplomacy except when it gives mods/admins unnecessary work to do!

Falsely accusing someone of being a multi-accounter/meta-gaming to rally others against them in a game, or claiming that your orders didn't come out the way you entered them to cover up your motives, means mods/admins spend time looking for cheaters/bugs which were made up.

All accusations against other players must be made directly to the mod/admin team directly as specified below, in private, for this reason, and software bug claims must be genuine, even if only told to another player.

On a strict interpretation Dragnar never broke the rules. Dragnar never made a FALSE accussation, even if he is proved wrong, he accussation isn't false if he believes it to be true; He never made the accussation to rally people against others and finally he never made an accussation against other players.

That said, all rules have a strict interpretation and a common sense interpretation, and I'm glad that Dragnar has acknowledged that his post was against the spirit of the rules.

On another matter, what do I do if someone has accused others of multi-ing in a game? You see dragnar acheived his desired result by posting on here, his 'breach' was rewarded, if I email mods and nothing happens quickly, should I post that accusation on here now? Have the mods opened up a new can of worms? Should the game be unpaused straight away?
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
24 Feb 11 UTC
@Maniac

It's very common for mods to pause games when they looking into things. Also, we have no problem with reminding us to check the email, especially if it's a time-sensitive issue. However, it would have been better if Draug had simply said "Check your email," as it would have been very clear to us what he was referring to.
Maniac (184 D(B))
24 Feb 11 UTC
@abge - thanks - check your email please.
peterwiggin (15158 D)

1. I think it would be more fun if somebody who wasn't a mod checked the mod gmail account.

2. Live games are much easier to win, simply because it takes a lot of communication to stop a solo. That, and there usually isn't more than one other competent player, and once he's taken out, everybody else just goes in circles until I have 18. non-live wta games are much harder to win . . . I'm about to get my first one though!
