Somehow the English do not talk the entire game and French and him are allies? No talking to any other player for 2 hours? But somehow has this great relatinship with France. France tells me he will talk to England to discuss a 3 way draw. Yeah right He's playing both countries.

Does anybody recognise the film this comes from?
I saw this in a film long ago and, being the father of daughters, decided to remember it, but I can't remember which film it's from. Does anybody recognise it?

Scene:Man meeting daughter's new boyfriend for the first time:-
"Remember this: I own a shotgun and a shovel and there's 300 acres of woodland behind the house... soft, loamy, soil... rich, earthy, smells..."

What to do when detecting cheater in anonymous/no ingame message games?
I just want to know how to handle if 2 team players join a anonymous/no-ingame message game.

Is there any way to prevent people doing such stupid things or are there any consequences for them?

Whoever is Germany in "A Fish Called Walrus"
You need to click the "Ready" button, not just the "Save" button for the game to progress. You are slowing up the whole game unnecessarily.

Any statistical wizards here?
I've always been poor at methods. I'm trying to analyze a pooled time series of various countries to see the effects of war/militarized disputes on state strength (as measured by taxation, institutional 'coherence', military spending, military personnel and some other factors). Any clue as to how to do to do a panel-corrected standard error procedure on a program like R or Stata?

Variant Elimination Game
Each round, add one point to your favorite variant, and subtract one from your least favorite. When a variant runs out of points, it's eliminated. When you post, put a (+1) and a (-1) next to the ones you change, so it's easier to follow.

New Map?
Hey, does anyone think that a new map at the time of the colonising of the Americas (or just North America) would be a good idea?

Iroquois and Algonquins in the ohio river valley would be a possibility too but might be too strong if the euros start off with only 2 SCs on the main land as suggested

yeah, idk how to fit natives in their with out making them too strong
2 starting terrs and cloe to one another? (which they were)

mabye limit the nuetral SCs around them?
Catch23 (0 DX)

but then whoever was a native american tribe would quit
Dan Wang (1194 D)

You could do the standing army thing to represent the American Indians where a neutral army occupies SC's but doesn't do anything aside from disbanding when attacked with sufficient force.
Dan Wang (1194 D)

Would it represent a somewhat historically accurate degree of resistance?
Catch23 (0 DX)
10 Feb 11 UTC
if u could have the Native Americans played by a computer that wasn't very tactiful, nor an expansionist, it might be better
@ Dan Wang

In my opinion, standing, stationary armies occupying SCs would be a tremendous annoyance and would only slow down the first few years of the game.

Just my two cents.
@The Master Warrior

Sort of like the colonization process?

The real question is oes anyone think that Mainland carribean split would work, Netherlands starts with one on Mainland, 2 in Carribean, France and England 2 Mainland NA 1 in caribbean. Spain, one in Florida area, 2 in Northern South America/Mexico 1 in Cuba, Port with 2 or 3 in Southern south America, Question is whether this balance would work or not in gameplay.

Something I didnt mention is the map parameters should cut off around halfway through texas, cutting mexico in half vertically and go to a little below the equator, with a northern limit of southern canada. ans an eastern limit of the tip of maine/brazil
@ Santa

Diplomacy isn't always completely realistic. Realistically, there would be small armies in the neutral countries in Classic Diplomacy.

@ TMW

However the native Americans were a much bigger delay on expansion then the small nuetral countries were. Today their still are Indians, and we fought them all the way up to this Century. Some how you would have to put Native Americans, or it would be to easy of an expansion.
Dan Wang (1194 D)
12 Feb 11 UTC
The difference here is that there is a need for the delay. In classic Diplomacy, most supply centres at the beginning of the game are fought over by two if not three players at once. In the case of a North American colonisation game, there would be nothing impeding players from just picking up supply centre after supply centre as they plow through the Great Plains.

Exactly
I see your point, but are there any Diplomacy variants out there that have stationary, neutral units? Can I have an example? I'm just curious at this point. It would be interesting to know if something like this has been tried, and if it was successful.

Why not give it a try.
You need to give me 2 maps (large- and smallmap) in the right webdip-format (and 2 more graphics with the territory-names), starting occupations and I can make a variant out of this.
Here is how to make the maps: http://forum.webdiplomacy.net/viewtopic.php?f=25&t=432
(Skip the coding part, it's outdated) send me a message or open your own thread on the dev forums if you want to know more.

I was reading this thread and it got me thinking...what if we held a tournament with the final game played on the World Map?

In order to qualify to play this game, you need to win or become runner-up in the nearest corresponding variant game. For instance:

http://www.vdiplomacy.com/variants.php#Empire4 (top 3 of 10)
USA
Western-Canada
Quebec

http://www.vdiplomacy.com/variants.php#FantasyWorld (top 3 of ?)
http://www.vdiplomacy.com/variants.php#Alacavre
Ghana
Kenya
South-Africa

http://www.vdiplomacy.com/variants.php#MateAgainstMate (top 2 of 9)
Oz
Frozen-Antarctica

http://www.vdiplomacy.com/variants.php#SouthAmerica8 (top 2 of 8)
Argentina
Brazil

http://www.vdiplomacy.com/variants.php#Colonial (top 3 of 7)
Pacific-Russia
China
India

http://www.vdiplomacy.com/variants.php#AncMed (top 2 of 5)
Libya
Near-East

http://www.vdiplomacy.com/variants.php#ClassicFog (top 2 of 7)
Europe
Russia

The winners of each variant get to choose which countries on the world map they want to play for in order of their win. If you want to aim to play say, Russia in the World Game map, you'd join the Fog of War game to qualify.

As outlined, we would need 53 players to start...

Anyway, just some thoughts...

I don't really like the World Games though. i really don't like how u can't trust any1 on ur same continent. but good idea.

What are you reading at the moment?
I just finished reading "Why the west rules for now" by Ian Morris. And now (continuing with the theme of historical determinism) I am about to start "The next 100 years" by George Freeman. He predicts Poland, Turkey and Japan will become super-powers (and maybe Mexico also).

Can a mod please check the webdipmod email?
I have sent a multi accusation there that needs swift action. The cheating is so obvious by the players' names, but the turn runs soon and I don't want the game destroyed by a cheat. I'm doing too well in it.
