Negative points in play?
I have noticed that sometimes the points in play and available points don't always add up, and that some players have negative points in play. Is this a bug or is there a reason for this?

I've never been shy of any of my geeky hobbies, and I've never had any of them stand in the way of scoring. *shrug* I can see how it would be a useful excuse, though.

"Forget the fact that I'm unwashed and unable to say a single word to a woman, it's the fact that I play DIPLOMACY that keeps me from scoring."

factually, if you don't have confidence in whatever it is you're doing it seems much less attractive. No matter how 'nerdy' you think other people might think of it, especially if it is something which they don't actually know anything about...

peterwiggin those were two different statements you need to view and judge independently.
let me make it more clear.
1. maximum 1% of the webdiplomacy.net users are girls.
2. maximum 1% of the girls in general are playing diplomacy (live or through net)
3. suppose you meet a girl and you want to score with her your chances being n%
a. 99% that girl doesn't play diplomacy so, if you reveal you play, your chances drop to 0,01n%
b (NEW) the girl actually plays diplomacy. Your chances are now 10n%.

@hellalt, what kind of craziness world do you live in where only those who also play dip can breed?

You're going to get some crazy speciation effects in a short few generations... i'm just hoping some people can bring new genes into the pool...

I would say of the 99% of girls who don't play Diplomacy, about 98% don't even know what it is. And that 98%, if they're interested, would probably enjoy a brief conversation about it and then make a judgment based on that. Because half of dating is listening to the other person's inane conversations about themselves.

I'm sorry, I meant to say "finding out about each other so that you may share every bit of your being." But either way, it's not like it's Dungeons and Dragons (which, even still, I've rarely gotten wholly negative reactions to) where it's popularly known as ZOMG nerdy.

The kind I want to live in.

My wife, interestingly enough, says that she has no desire to play Diplomacy...because it would result in her getting really pissed off and running and gunning at the first person that betrayed her, even at the expense of winning.

I said that's a pretty well-regarded strategy.

Urgent sitter needed
I am leaving tomorrow morning by plane to attend a funeral and won't be able to continue my games for a few days. I was able to pause 2 of them, but the third has not been paused yet. I just don't want to CD, and this obviously was short notice. Its a 14hr phase game so I may be grasping at air here, but reply if you can help me out.

F Den M Swe?
I have read in many places that Germany will do well if Austria does well, and even better if Russia does bad.
It would make sense that bouncing Russia in Sweden in fall 1901 would do good for the germans twofold.
But unless there is a western triple, Germany has at most two more fronts to defend, and probaly does not need a new enemy.
So, Is this a good move for Germany? better for a Germany with a French Ally? English Ally?

Gunboats
What is the point of them, really? I mean, this a game called Diplomacy. If you take the communication out of it, it becomes more like Risk, doesn't it? I realize that you can communicate intentions using supports (or at least, I imagine you can) but still...

Aside from that, does it play very differently from a 'normal' game? What about either of the compared to a public press game?
