Negative points in play?
I have noticed that sometimes the points in play and available points don't always add up, and that some players have negative points in play. Is this a bug or is there a reason for this?

Human: Surely 315a is redundant since you have already exercised those powers in interpreting the vote on 309. So in legal terms there is already a common law precedent for what you are trying to enact in 315a. So it is redundant!
TBroadley (178 D)

Gamemaster: fair enough, goat. I don't want to become a dictator, I swear! ;) But the punishment is frankly absurd. Can we agree on a more... moderate punishment?
TBroadley (178 D)
23 Dec 10 UTC
Gamemaster: I see no reason not to make it official.
Rivedo Degoss (495 D)

Sergeant Major comments on Rule Change 315a: Goat, you have been commenting on 315a several times without giving the required introduction, like I did. And I thought I was the rule breaker! Also, I voted "yea" for 315a because I wanted the phrase "I am a goldfish" to be interpretted as my "yea". (I changed my mind get over it). Consider this official notice of my intent :).
Sergeant Major comments on Rules Change 312: @Human, a more moderate punishment such as torture? :) Since I can't change my vote, I urg people to vote nay on this rule change. I want to lol at Lion and Goat making stupid videos lol.
TBroadley (178 D)
23 Dec 10 UTC
Gamemaster: Uh... I can't interpret "I am a goldfish" as "yea". It looks nothing like it.
Rivedo Degoss (495 D)
23 Dec 10 UTC
Sergeant Major comments on Rule Change 315a: I am saying that "I am a goldfish" should be understood as yea. The language of the Rule Change is "understood". Are you telling me you can't understand that? It's a rather simple substitution. "Sergeant Major votes I am a goldfish on Rule Change bla bla bla". Quite understandable.
TBroadley (178 D)
23 Dec 10 UTC
Gamemaster: seriously, I thought you liked democracy! Hypothetically I could (mis)understand "I am a goldfish" as nay instead of yea. I would have complete dictatorial power!
lemon10 (150 D)
23 Dec 10 UTC
Amusingly, i don't have to make a rule video. The rule specifies that i have to make one before the second vote period after i broke the rule, but if i don't the punishment for it is... having to make another video about the new rule i broke, so i don't really have a reason to actually make the video (unless someone corrects me on this somehow) and i could just put it off forever/till the rule changes. AHAHAHAH.
TBroadley (178 D)
23 Dec 10 UTC
Gamemaster: whoa. Another reason to change this rule.

Alpaca comments on Rule Change 301: I henceforth adopt the moniker Alpaca. NOW YOU KNOW OF MY TRUE AMBITION! MWAHAHAHA! If you fools had only listened to the wise lion... TREMBLE BEFORE THE ALMIGHTY ALPACA!

Alpaca votes nay on Rule Change 312

Alpaca comments on Rule Change 315: This is potentially a very dangerous rule since we have no control over the Gamemaster's interpretation. What if he decides to understand "yea" as "nay"? Oh no, the Right Honourable Alpaca sees through your ruse, Human! (Also, I totally knew that someone was going to pick Human.)

Alpaca votes nay on Rule Change 315
lemon10 (150 D)
23 Dec 10 UTC
@alpaca, you broke the rules, so you have to make a video too, you called yourself "alpaca" in your comment before you adopted the moniker
lion comments on rule change 315: potentially, but he already has complete control as he can adopt rules when he feels like it without any votes (and their is precedent for it as well).
TBroadley (178 D)
23 Dec 10 UTC
Gamemaster: guys, I would be more than willing to resign if you don't feel confident in me. Just putting that out there. I repeat, I'm not trying to be a dictator.

Or we could make Gamemaster an elected position.
lemon10 (150 D)
23 Dec 10 UTC
Nah, i'm fine with you being gm, the threat of complete tyranny is quite small as it is :), probably smaller then if we open it up to being a elected position (since we would have multiple gm's)
Rivedo Degoss (495 D)
24 Dec 10 UTC
Sergeant Major comments on Rule Change 306: That is an excelent interpretation Lion. Unfortunately, I can't keep all of the rules straight, so I won't change my recommendation for 306 or whatever Rule it was I commented on.

Sergeant Major adopts the moniker Human.
Gamemaster: MUAHAHAHAHA I am now the Gamemaster, HUMAN! Fear my awesome power!

If I were to enter I would urge Rule 301 be amended to Roman numerals, viz.: CCCI, and that Roman numerals apply to all Existing Rules in force, but that new rules be proposed in Arabic numeration until finalized by the GM.
- In addition,I move that the Gamesmaster should be renamed Dictator for Life. [Argentina just imprisoned their last one to life imprisonment, a more just punishment than instant death. Many newspaper obituaries are written "he/she died suddenly", a euphemism and also an oxymoron.]
If accepted, I am adopting as moniker "Yellowhammer", a bird seen in Wikipedia and not on my life list of birds seen.
TBroadley (178 D)
24 Dec 10 UTC
Gamemaster: I don't know how many rules Yellowhammer just broke there.
Rivedo Degoss (495 D)
24 Dec 10 UTC
Gamemaster: He has broken none at all. Taylor4 isn't actually a player yet. He has yet to express any interest in playing :). You have to be playing the game to break the rules. (I lost the game).
TBroadley (178 D)
24 Dec 10 UTC
Gamemaster: that's true, Sergeant Major.

Goat proposes Rule Change 316: That Rule 1 D be transmuted from immutable to mutable and that the words "his interest in playing" be deleted from Rule 1 D.

Goat comments on Rule Change 316: We have had two instances of apparently willing players failing the technical hurdle of expressing an interest in playing the game. We should be encouraging participation in the noble and exciting game of Nomic, so that it eventually surpasses such ubiquitous pastimes as tiddlywinks and snip-snap-snorum in popularity. Changing the hurdle for participation to merely posting in the thread would hopefully accomplish this.
lemon10 (150 D)
28 Dec 10 UTC
Sorry, goat, thats not legal. You can change it to mutable, then propose the rule change next turn, but a immutable rule can't be changed.
FatherSnitch (476 D(B))
28 Dec 10 UTC
Thanks, Lion. I was just using the precedent that was set by Rule Change 314 so I don't see why it can't be done in a single vote.

I am leaving tomorrow morning by plane to attend a funeral and won't be able to continue my games for a few days. I was able to pause 2 of them, but the third has not been paused yet. I just don't want to CD, and this obviously was short notice. Its a 14hr phase game so I may be grasping at air here, but reply if you can help me out.

F Den M Swe?
I have read in many places that Germany will do well if Austria does well, and even better if Russia does bad.
It would make sense that bouncing Russia in Sweden in fall 1901 would do good for the germans twofold.
But unless there is a western triple, Germany has at most two more fronts to defend, and probaly does not need a new enemy.
So, Is this a good move for Germany? better for a Germany with a French Ally? English Ally?

Gunboats
What is the point of them, really? I mean, this a game called Diplomacy. If you take the communication out of it, it becomes more like Risk, doesn't it? I realize that you can communicate intentions using supports (or at least, I imagine you can) but still...

Aside from that, does it play very differently from a 'normal' game? What about either of the compared to a public press game?
