Live game during the server reset. . .
I was signed up to be in a live game before the server went down yesterday and the game didn't start till hours later. I wasn't online and went into CD and Turkey won with an impressive 5 centers. (Everyone CDed but him.) Anyway the mods will cancel the game or am I stuck with the CD and impaired GR as a result?

High pot games WTA just aren't what they used to be.
Have high rollers been in a funk lately? I'm confused, hurt, and disappointed. Does nothing prevent NMRs anymore? How do you specify that you want to play a game without poor attitudes, or a game in which spiteful players don't throw the game to whoever's leading (in a WTA, no less) after his lying backfires? There are only so many players who can afford a 1500-point bet, and I bet a lot of poorer players would RELISH the chance to take their points.

This was a really strange game with a strange end (a 5-way with no stalemate lines near to be reached).
I would like to say France (strat) played a really solid game and I have to thanks Italy (Lando) for the move against France that give me a chance to survive.
I really didn´t understand Germany, why in the hell he keep attacking me when it´s clear France is the one who is taking his centers.
I agree with rdrivera2005, this was a really strange game. When I drew Austria I assumed I would probably get torn apart at the beginning. I figured my best bet would be to dive into the Balkans and hope for ugliness between Russia and Turkey. It ended up working out far better than I expected. The only real moment of danger for me was in Autumn 1901 when Russia had an army in Galicia while both Vienna and Budapest were unprotected. I took a gamble and defended neither, hoping he would rather secure Rumania, and lucked out. After that it was pretty smooth sailing.

Starting in 1902 I was in a unique position of power. Germany's movements towards Warsaw and Italy's builds (looked like a potential Lepanto) led me to believe that both of them were heading east; Russia would have his hands full defending against both Turkey and Germany (plus England in Norway constantly threatening St. Petersburg), and Italy would keep Turkey too occupied to stop me from sweeping further east. Seems I guessed correctly.

After Russia went down I noticed I was the only person who hadn't voted for a draw. I considered it briefly but decided that at the very least Italy and I could finish off Turkey for more points (sorry, Ava!). So I waited a couple of turns until that was done and re-evaluated the map. Mainly I was waiting to see if Italy would keep fighting with me or if he would turn on me. My route to 18 SCs was questionable at best at that point, but without Italy turning on me I figured I might have a chance if I fought it out and eventually backstabbed him. When he moved towards me in Spring 1906 I realized that the current outcome would be the best I could hope for. Continuing on would lead to Italy's destruction, sure, and possibly Germany... but by then France might be in a position to gain the solo, so I figured it was time to wrap things up while I still could.

Having said all that, good game all!

Not much for me to say, given how pathetic my life was as Russia. I have just no idea how to handle him, although I'd like to think this one was out of my hands?
Must say I expected more from Austria, who had the game under control and I think should have progressed on rather than accepting a draw.
@figlesquidge: Understood. If it were PPSC I definitely would have kept going. I seriously doubt I could have made it to 18 SCs with the game being WTA, however.

rdrivera: in 1903 both england and france attacked Germany for the first time. in 1904 both attacked again. in 1905 I put a play on norway to force north sea to hold norway and prevent a move whereby you convoy an army to norway and move that fleet to barents.

basically, I felt that both were attacking me. I believe the maps show that both were in fact attacking during the same time period.
figlesquidge (2131 D)

@twa - Maybe so, but you could definitely have reduced the size of the field. StP was within reach and with it a secure hold & stalemate mark across your northern border. Still, a positive result is a positive result. What would you suggest I do differently as Russia in future?
@figlesquidge - Eh... St. Petersburg seemed like a long shot to me. I could have taken Moscow, no question. As for St. Pete, it seemed far more likely to me that England would be able to grab and hold it. Without naval support in the northern half of the board I would never be able to get any further.

As for your performance as Russia... I'm really not sure. Every game has different circumstances; Even given identical situations, the "right" move in one might be completely wrong in another. In this one it looks like you basically just jumped by four different countries. I'm not sure there's much anyone could have done.
Err. I meant to say you GOT jumped by four different countries.

I tried to hold out for a long time. I made one misorder...F SMY-EAS instead of to ARM to block the Italian convoy. That was the end. I'm pretty sure I could've held out longer if it weren't for that. Anyhow...whatever. Bad game. Finis.
figlesquidge (2131 D)

Yeh sorry, I meant up to the StP stalemate point - clearly you wouldn't have crossed it.
jcbryan97 (134 D)

@figles: fwiw I dont think you could have done anything differently. Turkey was set against you from the opening. I (Germany) saw turkey's moves against you and decided to try to grab some SCs as well. There's not much you can do without an ally, but it looks like you played a perfect game given the situation.

The one difference I would have done is support Germany into sweden in autumn 01. Seeing turkey attack from the south, I would have done everything I could to get an ally in the north or at the very least get england and germany preoccupied with each other. But the caveat there is that while I think that's the best 'textbook' move, it would have backfired here b/c Germany was heading to Silesia that same turn. More than likely the offer of sweden as a olive branch would have fallen to the idea of an easy ransack of russia. Thus it would have done more harm than good. (in other words, i would have played it differently and done worse)

@TWA: I think you made the right call drawing. at first I thought you should have tried a bit longer, especially b/c I didnt think I (germany) belonged in the draw. but on further thought I think France's strong southern movements, solid wall against me (germany) and England's move to norwegian all gave the impression that France was nearing that point where it could go for a solo.
My comments:

As Italy I never want to attack Austria off the bat. So, when Turkey opened anti-russia I figured I might as well continue and try and work a lepanto. Now, the Lepanto did not go as well as was planned. Ava was very successful in defending in. To the point that Austria was doing very well and I still hadn't gained the Eastern Med. I felt that I needed to convoy my army back from Tunis to Apulia in case Austria got an ideas.

Eventually I got into the Eastern Med and I was able to bring the army across. I knew Austria was committed to the alliance at this point. Once I finally got Smyrna we were at a point in the game where France was the biggest power and seemed like it might have potential to keep growing.

So i quickly moved my fleets in that direction. It worked to the extent that it was supposed to. I knew France would turn on me but it made the balance of power a bit more even.

At this point, with France pouring fleets into the Med, I was really hoping Austria would let me into Ankara so I could get a build and have a fourth southern fleet to match France. The same turn Austria took Ankara he also took Sev and Warsaw. Now he was the big power.

He could easily have taken Venice. I knew this so I was trying to hedge and return my units to a place where I could try and defend from both sides. I figured I'd be in for a tough fight until Austria drew.
One question for stratagos: Why were you voting draw in 1904?
ava2790 (232 D(S))
30 Nov 10 UTC
@Lando - sigh. I have talked with you about your preconceived ideas. Let me have you know that were it not for my misorder in blocking your convoy you would have been in dire straits!
I feel like the two of us end up fighting at the start of every game we play together.
rdrivera2005 (3533 D(G))
30 Nov 10 UTC
@jcbryan - You usually look at the orders? This is a keyp point on gunboats, look at the orders and see what other players are signaling. I offer support for you more then once on 1901-1903 and you never give me a single support. Also, it´s clear France is the bigger power on the West, so joining forces against him seems obivous to me (but not to you, you keep pushing against Russia and me). You can´t play a gunboat as it was you against everybody, you have to find allies and the only ways are through moves.
I was just waiting the moment France start to land armies on my home island, when Italy did the move to the Med and save my ass.
jcbryan97 (134 D)
30 Nov 10 UTC
@rdrivera: Yes, I try to look at the orders. I understand that to be a key point in gunboats and your implication.

You offered support into Sweden and then a hold and then tried to move there as a stab.

While I understood that you wanted to appear as offering friendship, I felt that you were unreliable. That feeling caused me to cover Sweden and block your stab.

My ultimate preference would have had you support me into Sweden to show friendship (it was unnecessary as a tactic). Then move to Barents instead of supporting a hold in Sweden. I could have then supported you into StPetes and attacked warsaw myself. We would have ended with Sweden and Norway DMZ'd, using our units for better causes. But can't always get what you want.
rdrivera2005 (3533 D(G))
30 Nov 10 UTC
@jcbryan - You are right, the first rule of diplomacy is that we can't always get what we want. To me was cristal clear that our main enemy should be France, so when you didn´t move against him and started to move north while France is taking your centers it seems to me like you have choosed your side and that´s why I attacked Swe. Also, I didn´t consider attacking Russia because he is under a lot of pressure on the south while France is completelly unopposed. I still don´t get why you shouldn´t consider moving after France.
jcbryan97 (134 D)
30 Nov 10 UTC
I think you saw France as I saw Russia.

Russia was in Munich before France ever moved against me. France's first move towards me was a retreat into Ruhr after you took Belgium from him---I don't fault him too much for that in a gunboat (I try not to hold grudges in gunboats).

France's next move was to take Munich... but not from me. They kicked Russia out of Munich. At that point I wouldnt consider France to be a lifelong ally, but I wouldnt discount the possibility of a NAP between us (as much as possible in a gunboat).

France's first actual attack on me came after you stabbed me and supported him in MAO. To me France seemed pragmatic and too strong to defeat, especially if my only hope was relying on a tenuous relationship with someone who's already stabbed me.

I'd also point out that you supported France to hold in MAO before I ever retaliated against you. I assumed that support order was a sign to France that you two ought to cooperate against me.

Russia at that point had lost Sevastopol, but gained Munich. Because Turkey was being hit by a Lepanto they use Sevastopol to support Moscow---the gesture is returned. I certainly couldnt count Russia out.

Another point to explain my thinking at that time is that I was looking to defeat nations, not just cripple them. The sooner we eliminated a nation, the better chances I had at being included in a draw. I didn't want Russia to have a lone unit in StPetes that was being propped up by you or Turkey.

hope that helps understand my mentality and move choices.

A quick answer for Lando, then back to the books:

I voted draw the instant you moved on me because I couldn't simultaneously fight off you, England, and Germany. It was my way to communicate to G and E and say "look, I can't win, but Italy is going to let Austria solo. We can do the draw thing if you're game"

I then redeployed against you and did not take the opportunity to move on them. This stalemated you, which (in my mind) meant you were going to get flattened by Austria from behind shortly.

Germany (idiotically IMO) moved on me even though I had indicated I was willing to support him, but I gave him one more chance prior to the end of the game, and he didn't do it again. If he had I would have supported England against him and probably ended up with a three way draw - and if both of them had attacked I would have kamikazied and given Austria the win.

Had you waited one more turn to move on me I may have been too far involved with invading England to back down, but on the flip side I may have had enough builds to keep you stalemated while I beat on them
rdrivera2005 (3533 D(G))
01 Dec 10 UTC
@strat - "Had you waited one more turn to move on me I may have been too far involved with invading England to back down" - this is exactly what I was thinking when I say that Italy save my sorry ass.

@jcbryan - You are right, I could have waited a little longer before giving up to try to set some allliance with you, but I was worried that if I wait longer France will just crush me (and he would).

All in all, a good game and the result is far better then what I deserve....
jcbryan97 (134 D)
01 Dec 10 UTC
@strat: Can you explain how my reclamation of Kiel was idiotic?
stratagos (3269 D(S))
01 Dec 10 UTC
Because you were completely and utterly hosed unless england and I *both* supported you, yet you attacked both of us. Had austria continued, he could have taken everything you had in Russia, and signaled to E and I through the use of support moves that we were free to finish you. Given that you had just demonstrated you were an opportunistic twit who wasn't on-board with the whole 'stop austria' thing - especially since I could have easily taken BER myself that spring but did not so you could possibly defend WAR - that would have been a tempting offer.

It also prevented me from defending MUN in a way that left me freedom to push Italy back - not necessarily a horrible thing from your POV I admit, but certainly annoying from mine

I also came very close to deciding to take it back and sending singals to E that he should take your northern territories; I chose not to, but had I done do, or had you done any other hostile move on me, Austria would have doubtlessly seen how chaotic things were and continued his go for the gold. You would not have survived that.

Whatever you intention or logic was, it read as a short sighted and greedy move, and made me *much* more likely to take the risk of finishing you off rather than keeping you around for the draw. I couldn't risk exposing HOL because you'd already shown that giving you an opening was not wise; that made it that much harder to set up a stalemate position
jcbryan97 (134 D)
01 Dec 10 UTC
Well when I have more time I'd like to discuss this further. I felt I was playing a precarious balance during the game and have benefited from my talks with rdrivera. I'd be interested in your take on rdrivera's position that you were our obvious enemy target.

But that will be for later, because right now I must honestly say i'm frustrated that you continue to use terms like idiotic and twit. I can understand flippantly using a term to express frustration in the beginning---I dont care for it, but can understand it. But the continued use of it is not good. especially when it goes from describing the moves or actions of the individual to describing the individual themselves.
stratagos (3269 D(S))
