it is called the Cigar club to evoke a gentleman's atmostphere, like the one prevailed in Yalta where the World was divided among smokes of cigars :)

A Metagaming Game
I want to organise a game where Italy at the start divides the other 6 players into 3 pairs who must then metagame for the win. No-one may disclose their metagame ally, nor who they are not allied with. People can only comment about other pairs (real or imaginary). So only Italy knows exactly what are the 3 alliances.

The game will be anon WTA of course. Anyone interested?

The 2010-11 NHL Season Starts In 5 Days...Predictions and Picks and the Posteason--OH MY!
Yep--just a few more days and The Good Ol' Hockey Game starts rolling again! So let out your fandomonium and let's fill the next few days with some talk about teams that might actually WIN (Mets finished 79-83 today and the 49ers are basically done before they began at 0-4, so that's the end of THEM for a while...) and what you think. Who'll surpise? Who'll disappoint? Scoring leaders? Postseason picks? Cup winner? Will teams be moving North soon? Faceoff Time! ;)

My preictions:

-The Coyotes will NOT make the playoffs again; they were a surprise last year, but now everyone's gunning for them, and I didn't think they were world-beaters to begin with...so with the secret out, they may play well at times, but teams gunning for them, not to mention aa tumultuous front office that can't help team concentration, and the Ducks and Kings getting better in the West means the Coyotes might spend the winter (their last one in Phoenix?) on the couch and not in the playoffs.

-The Leafs will just make the playoffs, with Giguere (you're welcome, by the way, Toronto) behind the pipes and the fan base starting to get hot about the disappointments of the last few years, the Leafs' staff is on the hot seat, and I thionk they're ready to shock a few teams and just squeak into that #8 or #7 seed.

-The Blackhawks will not repeat as Stanley Cup Champions.

-Alexander Ovechkin will do something dirty...OK, maybe that's like predicting the Rain in Spain to fall Mainly in the Plain (or the moist temperate zone, if you're not musically inclined) but I mean I think Ovie will be ionvolved in a headlining, big-time move that his fans and the School of Goonery in hockey will call "Good ol' fashioned physical hockey" and the rest will deem a goon's action...I've never liked Ovie, but he is a great player and productive, but plenty controversial as well, and it's jsut a feeling but I think we've yet to see the best--or worst--he can do.

-The Coyotes may or may not find an owner before the December 31st deadline, but I DO think, with the sheer amount of teams failing in the US and Winnipeg now rebuilt with a new arena, corporate support, a stronger Canadian dollar, and billion-dollar ownership duo Chipman/Thomson ready to go, the Winnipeg Jets will return soon

Playoff Seeds:

Western Conference:

1. Red Wings (damn...)
2. Sharks
3. Canucks
4. Blackhawks
5. Avalanche
6. Flames (poised for a return, I think)
7.Ducks
8. Kings

Quarterfinals:

-#1 DET def. #8 LA in 5 games (Without much playoff experience against LA falls)
-#7 ANA def. #2 SJ in 6 games (don't believe me? Check 2008-09...)
-#3 VAN def. #6 CGY in 4 games (I feel the Canucks are ready to go on a roll...)
-#4 CHI def. #5 COL in 7 games (The surprise great series, CHI just edges the Avs)

Semi-Finals:

-#1 DET def. #7 ANA in 6 games (That hurt to write...the PAIN...hope I'm wrong!)
-#3 VAN def. #4 CHI in 7 games (A great series, but the Cup Reign ends here for CHI)

Western Conference Finals:

-#3 VAN def. #1 DET in seven games (It'll go the distance, and then I think sheer emotion takes over, for Detroit this is business as usual, and that'll work often--but not when your opponent is so fired up the come out and beat you to the puck off of sheer talent and emotion)
You have very strange tastes in teams. As for me, I have nothing to complain about. My Hawks hoisted Lord Stanley's Cup! I got to stand on the corner of Jackson and Wacker and scream my lungs out as the team went by.

All my years of fandom were vindicated, including the years when I stopped watching because I could take no more from Bill Wirtz. The Chelios Trade. Darian fucking Hatcher. Eddie and Dominik getting dumped to make room for Jimmie Waite. Years of claiming scrubs like Daze and Sullivan were stars. All of them exorcised in one season (well, aided by Wirtz dying a couple of years ago, sadly, before he had time to get hung upside down from a tree in Grant Park with feral dogs tearing his flesh from his bones for his crimes against Blackhawk fans). Will I miss Big Buff, Sopel, Antti, and the rest of the ex-Hawks? Yes, yes I will. But they gave me a Cup winning team, abd some glorious memories.

Besides, they kept their top 4 defenders together, as well as Toews, Kane, Hossa, Brouwer and Sharpie. They'll be OK, and if they aren't, well, they still hoisted Lord Stanley's Cup in my lifetime. I wasn't sure that would happen 4 years ago.

How do I have strange taste in teams?

What's spo strange about rooting for the Ducks, Mets, and 49ers (the last two are disappointing and failures, respectively, but still, how is that strange?)
Anaheim, San Francisco, and New York. Wide geographic scatter, vastly different cultures.

I don't like the Ducks to make the playoffs. They have one top-four defenceman (Visnovsky), and he's is on the downhill. Mara? Sutton? Yikes. Fowler was a steal at 12, and with Sbisa you'll be alright again soon, but not this year. The Blues with Halak will make it instead, and both them and the Kings will be way higher. Five and six, with some combination of Colorado, Phoenix, Dallas, or Calgary rounding out seven and eight.

As long as the 'Hawks have Toews, Kane, Keith, and Seabrook they'll be in contention. I don't think they'll win this year, but like Pittsburgh they'll be around for years to come.

With the Blackhawk victory this spring, the Leafs are officially due, right? Right? I still think Burke has a Kaberle trade up his sleeve (LA?), as well as another move or two to make. Maybe playoffs this year, maybe not, but the most reason to at least be somewhat optimistic for the future since 1993... Kessel, Phaneuf, and Kadri is the best young core we've brought together in a while (sad, because it's not all that impressive...), and if one of those goalies pans out we might be ok.

@Bob Genghiskhan:

Well, LA didn't have a football team, and I saw Steve Young and Jerry Rice light it iup one night, my dad's on the phone talking on and on about his Oakland Raiders, and then my AUNT, who won't stop talking even about ten or twenty "Uh huh...uh HUH..Well--uh huhhhhh....." sessions, won't stop talking, asks me if I like a team--so I picked the team that was exciting and fun to watch that night. Just lucky it wasn't the Bills, I guess... ;) (Though the Niners NOW aren't much better...)

I WAS a Los Angeles Dodgers fan--for about a month, i was really a PIAZZA fan, Mike Piazza, catching for my little league team (and being the tiniest kid on the team) I idolized Piazza, so when they traded him I was so mad...so then I was a Marlins fan for a week...and finally a Mets fan, and he stayed there, I read up on the Mets and how they were always either losers or the underdog miracle team and that they were the little guys next to the Braves and Yankees...

And being a VERY little guy myself, the love affair stuck, and by the time Piazza left eight years later I was already a hard-core fan and in love witht eh squad (I still wish he could've signed back on for a lst year with the Mets, should've retired a Met.)

And the Ducks are near LA, and I liked the Kariya/Selanne pairing, Selanne was and is my favorite...and they TOO were the udnerdogs against the Red Wings in the playoffs, so I was hooked there as well.

So that's how I got my teams--and as the Niners at the time I started rooting for them were after their Super Bowl years and trying like crazy to fight off Aikman and the Cowboys and Favre and the Packers (oh, all those many, many years ago when he was a PACKER, and his hair WASN'T grey!) and so were underdogs sometimes, at least against Favre, the Mets were underdogs, the Ducks were...even this year, the USA soccer team, I'd never even watched soccer before but was fun to watch thgem and identiofied with them as the underdog...

I guess I like underdogs and scrappy, fighting teams...and maybe if I instead chose to love the Yankees, Steelers, and Canadiens I'd be a lot happier come the end of the season...EVERY season! ;)

@Rusty: But Hiller's a great goalie...and the Ducks have ALWAYS had a ton of shots on goal, from Hebert to Giguere to now, so that's no new thing, and the goalies have held up thus far...

We have a great couple offensive lines and tools, Getzlaf, Perry, Selanne, Bobby Ryan, some others...

The Leafs BETTER have a bright future, they have our beloved Giggy...! :/

Hope you're wrong about the Ducks, Rusty! ;)

Anyone up for a highly rated Ghost Ranking game?
I saw that some players did this last month so I'd like to start one this month. Game will be based of the October rankings list. I'm 68 so I'd like to find players somewhere in the same neighborhood. Details can be decided here as no game has been created yet.
