A Metagaming Game
I want to organise a game where Italy at the start divides the other 6 players into 3 pairs who must then metagame for the win. No-one may disclose their metagame ally, nor who they are not allied with. People can only comment about other pairs (real or imaginary). So only Italy knows exactly what are the 3 alliances.

The game will be anon WTA of course. Anyone interested?

The 2010-11 NHL Season Starts In 5 Days...Predictions and Picks and the Posteason--OH MY!
Yep--just a few more days and The Good Ol' Hockey Game starts rolling again! So let out your fandomonium and let's fill the next few days with some talk about teams that might actually WIN (Mets finished 79-83 today and the 49ers are basically done before they began at 0-4, so that's the end of THEM for a while...) and what you think. Who'll surpise? Who'll disappoint? Scoring leaders? Postseason picks? Cup winner? Will teams be moving North soon? Faceoff Time! ;)

Where do you fit on the trustworthy-untrustworthy scale?
How do you think other perceive you on this site, trustworthy or untrustworthy. I eagerly anticipate flame wars to come fast and furious if we get some action to this thread, so I'll start off with my own self-evaluation.

Given a scale of 1-10, where 1 equals a trustworthiness of a sort as to shame George Washington for his mendacity and 10 means that Stalin thinks of you as a mad dog liar, I'd probably put myself in the range of a 4.6 or so; slightly on the trustworthy side of things, but I can get stabby from time to time.
Parallelopiped (691 D)
21 Sep 10 UTC
I'm a 1.5 - I don't think I can shame GW but I also cannot tell a lie. Mendacity has just passed me by like a ship in the night. Straight as a die, true as a tautology, honest as the day is long (in midsummer north of the arctic circle) - that's me.
FriedOkraBlues (100 D)

I'm probably at about 6.7-7.3

A few people have been repeatedly on my bad side, but I have a few players with whom I've had consistently good relationships.

Ask Draug or Bask right now, and I'm a 9. Hopefully drano or Centurion would say I'm about a 4 or 5.
Going to echo Bob here. I'm fairly middle ground.

The deal is that I lack a consistent style, or rather, I apply it inconsistently. So I'm probably a little less trustworthy than the middle, because I lack predictability.
Where has centurion been, btw? I enjoy sparring with, or allying with, the old troglodyte.

In real life I never lie.
However, diplomacy is all about the ability to deceive & manipulate your opponents to your own benifit.
It is not lying, it is not dishonest, it is the art & skill of the gameplayer to outmanouver ones opponents by the skillful use of logic & deception.
That is what the game was designed for.
I would estimate that most players that I have played against would put me as a 2 to a 3 but some of the unlucky ones would call me nasty names or an 8 to a 9.
acmac10 (120 D(B))
21 Sep 10 UTC
I would put myself at a 3.5 overall but can be a 1.5 and up to a 4.7.

I am facinated by the reply of Perry6006.
How do you win so many games & yet never tell a lie in any of the games that you play?
Me thinks you are a practiced deceiver of great ability!!!
Draugnar (0 DX)

In dip, I'm a 3ish. I rarely stab, and then just for fun at the end and draw with my ally or to teach a lesson (right Bask?). But the irony is that I'm a bold face liar at poker. I mix up my game and intentionally do faint tells that throw my opponent off. At least for a couple of hours.
Crazyter (1335 D(G))
21 Sep 10 UTC
I used to be a 2 or 3 and very rarely stab. But my Draw rate was too high and my win rate was too low so I've stepped up the lying and stabbing a bit. Guess what-it hasnt worked!

@Draug-I am intrigued about how you intentionally do a faint tell. Like would the dip equivalent be something like you don't respond to a message but you still follow through like you promised a few times, then the next time you don't respond and you hit them with the grand stab?
I'd guess Draug makes up a trait that goes with a certain strength of hand, be it bluffing or having the strong hand. Then he plays that way until he loses a small money hand based upon someone reading him (atypical bet from opponent if he's bluffing, or folding too early if he's holding), then he starts simulating his tell when he doesn't actually have those cards.
Draugnar (0 DX)
21 Sep 10 UTC
My favorite is the "count a stack of chips and have them ready". Then you pick them up and consider them before checking. Be careful not to start towards the line or some rooms will call it a balk and make you put 'em out. When your opponent puts out their bet if they are after you, you fold. Do this a few times on marginal hands and bleed of $20 or $30 then when you have a hand, repeat and reraise. Do this once and get called. On the second time, be bluffing. He'll fold and you show the bluff. Then go back to strong hands only never showing. If he repops you, you get even more. Just be sure you have a very strong hand and consider the reward to risk potential if he repops you.
Draugnar (0 DX)
21 Sep 10 UTC
Another thing is to say to yourself the exact opposite of what you want them to do. Your subconcious tells will show but say the exact opposite of what they have. In other words, trick your subconcious to trick them.

im to new on the site to rele truly know, but id say so far on this site im a 5, now on my other diplo playground(facebook) i truly am a 2. ive only lied to 3 people on that site, 2 of them i lied to and stole the win(my only 2 diplo wins ever) and one was my cousin who wanted to ally with me and i didnt want to. so im pretty trustworthy.

wow... this is a whole different crop of Dip players - I dont think I've played with any of you (except a RT game with ava maybe)... sigh.

I'd say I'm a 9. but people who play with me probably consider me more of a 9.5 =P

seriously, you gotta ask what other people think of you...

but then again, I try to only play anonymous ;)
Pete U (293 D)
22 Sep 10 UTC
Babak - you're an 11 ;)

I vary in game - I'm a 1 in some cases, moving up to an 8 or so in others. I try very hard not to lie outright though, but sometimes it is unavoidable

@ Babak -I have played you and you're a whole lot more honest than a 9.

@ Draug-I get your drift, although not all the details, about poker. I was wondering if you had a means of doing a faint tell in on-line dipomacy.

I could said I am a 1, but I will be probably lying :-)
Some people on the site would say I am at 9, but I guess most will say I am under 5, my draw rate over 50% probably have some reason.
I try to not lell a lie unless it´s really necessary. Being vague on purpose or even telling "I am going to crush you because it´s my best shot" is sometimes a better approach.

@Crazyter - You are still a 2 or 3....

@Babak - I won´t tell you are a 9.5, but I always look twice and carefully at my back when playing with you :-)
TheGhostmaker (1545 D)

" I'm a 1 in some cases, moving up to an 8 or so in others."

So let me see if I understand - you're asking people if they are

a) dishonest
b) willing to be honest about it

is that right?
kislikd (840 D)
06 Oct 10 UTC
@stratagos - You enter a room with two men in front of two doors. Down one door is the exit, the other, escape. You may only ask one question of the two men, but you know that one man will always tell the truth, while the other will always tell a lie.

The difference between that scenario and this thread is that there is only one person, and as you point out, we don't know if they are the truth teller, or the liar :)

I'd say it's ultimately safest to assume everyone is an 11 and then scale back as the game progresses.
