If so, what's your team? How'd your season go and if in the post-season how do you think your team will do?

My team is the Oregon State Beavers (2006 and 2007 national champs). They started off great but then hit a rough patch but then ended strong just making it into the post-season.

College Baseball is underrated; what I really enjoy is the summer leagues that get college guys ready for pro ball.

I can watch a baseball game every once in a while during the summer. It's perfect for watching while drinking and grilling, but I don't have your stamina to follow 160-something games in a season. Same thing with basketball.

Personally I don't watch or attend much baseball. I enjoy listening to it on the radio. Helps occupy my mind when doing mindless tasks like dishes and mowing the yard.

Wrong. Most people outside the USA and Cuba couldn't care less about baseball of any kind. It's a very boring game to watch.

The most popular sports, globally, are:

1st: Football (soccer) - an estimated 3.5 billion people globally play or watch football.
2nd: Cricket - around 3 billion.
3rd: Field Hockey - around 2 billion.
4th: Tennis - around 1 billion.
5th equal: Volleyball and table tennis - around 900 million each.
7th equal: Golf, American Football, Baseball, Basketball - around 450 million each.

These results may appear surprising, but you have to remember the huge populations of countries like India and China who are very interested in sports, but not necessarily mainstream US sports. Indians are not interested in baseball at all, but they love cricket, hence cricket - which is also hugely popular in Pakistan, UK, Australia, New Zealand, across southern Africa and in the Carribean, being in second place.

@Jamiet99uk, taken out of context my statement might be wrong. The context was of the different flavors of baseball (Major league, minor league, college, amateur summer league, high school, and on down) most baseball fans are major league baseball fans.

I damn well know that the U.S. isn't the center of the universe. I know that more people in the world drink goat milk than cow milk.

I clearly titled the post so that those not interested could pass it by. If you don't want to talk about U.S. College Baseball, then feel free to not talk about it.

@Panthers, I was born in Corvallis and still live here. I went to Oregon State almost 20 years ago now.

Did you listen to the game today? 3 hour rain delay in Florida but OSU beat the higher seeded Florida Atlantic 6-4. Tomorrow against Florida will be a much more difficult challenge.

Congrats to LSU for beating UC Irvine in L.A. Tomorrow's game against UCLA should be another good one.

Okay, so of the teams mentioned...

OSU - goes the expected 1-2 for a 3 seed. Was a turbulent and yet fun season. Go Beavs!

Stanford - goes an embarrassing 0-2, although not the only 2 seed to do so. Cal also did.

Georgia Tech - still alive and plays an elimination game on Monday against Alabama

LSU - goes 1-2 and season is over

Texas - cruises into the super-regionals against TCU for the second year in a row. At least they didn't have to go 25 innings to get through the regional this year.

I don't understand American college sports, Especially the scholarships. To me a scholarship should be for scholars. In Canada there are no Sports scholarships, for some scholarships, sports help as an indication of an active student, but they are not a major part.

Yet my cousin is taking advantage of it and getting a free education because of Baseball in the University of NY at Buffalo.

American college sports are all about the money.

The first thing to know is that most college athletic departments run a deficit and have to be partially funded from the general funds. A very small percentage of institutions actually make money from athletics. American football is the main money maker. Basketball can also make money but to a lesser extent. Baseball rarely makes any money. Those tend to pay for all the rest of the sports.

So the question is, why have sports at all if it costs money? It comes down to awareness/advertising.

For example, small schools have found that adding sports increases the number of students. Students will have heard of the school so will give it greater consideration when choosing where to go.

The other side of that is alumni. What ties an alumni to their former school besides the piece of paper mounted on the wall? Sports. When a school has success in sports, it increases alumni donations for academics, not athletics. So the costs of running the athletic department is offset by the alumni academic donations.
