English words that look like they have been spelled wrong
Anyone come across weird English words that looked like they have been spelled wrong, but in fact, have not?

*wrong (yes I see the irony in asking if I am worng...)

threshold - I always think it's a combined word of thresh and hold (and pronounced as such), but one of the h's is dropped.

@Draugnar, you are correct Scots are a people (who happened to have been conquered by the English several times, although they only seem to remember the one battle they won).

hame (or haim) can be considered a Scots word, my point was that accent/dialect/history etc can affect how people pronunciate words.

If a scottish school child read the line "I'm going home" from a book they would pronunciate 'home' as 'hame'. Because of this, we have to be careful in assuming that words that we think rhyme, rhyme to everyone.

""Tattoo - Why a double t?"

Double consonants can be one of the hardest conventions for students to grasp and probably causes more errors than anything.

The way I remember how to spell words like 'Tattoo' is to double the consonant if the first vowel doesn't say its name (ie it is a long vowel)

Examples are:
Diner (long vowel, single consonant)
Dinner (short vowel, double consonant)
Coma (long vowel, single consonant)
Comma (short vowel, double consonant)

As with all rules, there are exceptions, but this one serves me quite well."

Bah, don't need the double t in french for that word. « tatou »looks fine to me. Besides, don't need a double consonant in "aspirin", why for that word? :P

"Sure, there are a lot of funny letter things going on. Why does G sometimes sound like a J? Why have X when we could just use KS. Why does the X make a Z sound when the first letter of a word, why not just use a Z? Inquiring minds want to know."

So, I'm going to be using some technical stuff to answer this question. <> will enclose a letter to indicate that we're talking about the letter itself. [ ] will enclose a letter or letters to indicate a sound represented. So, [g] as in the first letter of gorge, [dZ] as in George, [gz] as in exotic, [k] as in car, [s] as in seal, [z] as in zeal, [t] as in Tom, [S] as in shore, and [tS] as in chore.

The reason <g> represents [g] and [dZ] is because off a certain process of sound change called assimilation. The vowels [i] as in beet and [e] as in day tend to drag [g] and [k] forward in the mouth, a process called palatalization, because the sounds move from the velum/soft palate, front towards the teeth. This is why, for instance, there's English cheese and German Kaese. So, before historical [e] and [i], Proto-Germanic [k] became [tS]. Vulgar Latin [k] became [s] or [S] in similar environments, not so familiar with that shift. But basically, languages like French and English have very conservative orthographies, which is to say that when we first started spelling regularly, we spelled how we talked. The way we talked changed dramatically for various reasons, and here we are with this rather difficult spelling system.

"the k in knight and know were pronounced within the last hundred years."

It is true the k used to be pronounced with these words, but the timescale is much longer, more like the 17th century.

Yeah, my bad, that was supposed to read "few hundred"

Like another, inasmuch, someone, anyone, or forever? Somehow (another compound word) eachother isn't working for me.

Apparently you can spell "diverse" without the "e," making it look just like divers.

Yes just like the other compound words. Maneuver is also a ridiculously hard word to spell, given than Brits spell it "manoevre" I think. It was hard enough! Lol

The word cannot always trips me up. I type can not and the Word grammar checker complains. Why do they get compounded into one word? If I wanted them together I would have written can't.
UOSnu (113 D)

There's a distinction between "can not" and "cannot." I believe the Merriam-Webster Dictionary of English Usage treats it pretty well, and it's available for free on Google Books.

One of the absurd things in English is that you write 'full' with double 'l', while all kinds of words ending on 'ful' with just one 'l', for instance 'plentiful' (full of plenty). A funny word, is then 'successful'. Double 'c', double 's' and just a single 'l'.

Accessory and sorry. The may not be related in meaning at all, but the pronunciation is similar. Shouldn't it be accessorry?

Is Ghost rating (not ranking) affected by not playing for a while?
Does anyone know if your Ghost rating is impacted if you don't play any games for a while (like over the holidays)? I realize that your comparative RANKING may change.... but is your rating in any way affected?

Disbanding on the game map?
I thought that the game map used to show disbanding of armies. But in a game that just had a retreat phase with some disbands, nothing is shown. Is that intentional?
