Debaters
Who on this site is a debater? I am interested to see how many debaters are on here, because it seems like the skills are pretty similar. Please let me know (also high school, college, judge, etc) Just wondering, also what do you think about next years topics.

Mods! Pause these games:
(All three were paused at 4:05 São Paulo time and progressed at 4:10 São Paulo time. São Paulo is currently three hours ahead of U. S. Eastern Time.)

and won't be back until Monday afternoon --> I won't be back until Monday afternoon.

What in the world. All three of three of the above games paused. I had to leave in a hurry. I had no time to find the e-mail for the mods, to post messages in my games or even to vote again for a pause. I could only post this thread and hope someone would do something about this, but no one even bumped my thread in the 4 days I was gone. Why should I be punished by a glitch in the system? In fact, I would have been better off if the games did not pause, since the countdown timer wouldn't have been reset!

So what do I ask of the mods now? I ask that they push the games back to before I 'missed' any phases. But other players already showed their moves? Too bad. They knew the game should have been paused but they revealed their hands anyway.

Which is the greater evil, to let 1 person be "set back" in 3 games by a glitch, or have 18 people be set back by it? Be thankful you only lost 1 turn, as far as I can tell looking at those games, you aren't really hard pressed because you lost a turn, and you'll probably come out of it relatively unscathed.
JECE (1248 D)
24 Nov 09 UTC
It is not me vs. 18. Everyone has been set back and everyone is supposed to be gauranteed by the rules of this site. I actually did CD in one of those games, by the way.

And this is not an issue of subs, by the way. I knew these games would be paused a couple days in advance. I never expected the pauses not to work.

> Why should I be punished by a glitch in the system?
What was the glitch, is the problem that no mod was around to pause the games?
JECE (1248 D)
24 Nov 09 UTC
No, the problem is that all three games 'paused', then five minutes later all three games progressed to the next phase. Effectively, pausing the games had the same effect as everybody finalizing, which did not happen. I saw before the progression, however, that each of the games said the next phase was 'Now', instead of 'Paused', as my Notices reported. I had seen the same thing before, but before the games I played in were effectively frozen, as they always said 'Now', but never progressed. I believe this was before some updates. To my surprise, these games did in fact progress, and I only had enough time to post this thread, since I had to go. (If you don't understand how I was able to pause all three games at the same moment, it is fairly simple: I asked everyone to submit their votes for a pause several days in advance, so that I could submit the final vote the day I had to leave. Seeing that everyone had voted for a pause in all three of my games except myself, I did not find a sitter. Shortly before I had to leave, I submitted my final vote in all three games, and shortly thereafter all three games paused, or so said my Notices. What happened instead I explained above.)

Trying to figure out what caused that to happen JECE, thanks for the explanation, once it's under wraps I'll try and work out what to do about it in this case

Added some extra checks that'll prevent it happening again, sorry about that. Regarding your case there's no easy option for what to do, if I moved the games back 3-4 turns I'd have 6 annoyed people instead of 1 (they couldn't have anticipated the game was about to move forward due to a bug, I expect most people would give orders in case the pause didn't happen), but something has to be fixed.

I could remove you from those games in exchange for a share of the pot relative to the size of your share of SCs when you set the games to paused, because I don't think anything will fix it so that it's back to the state it was at 3-4 turns ago (unless if everyone would be happy to roll back in any of those games, let me know if that's the case)

Alright, then, I'll update you on the situation game-by-game:

gameID=13932: I only missed a build phase, where Austria-Hungary and I could build. Everyone has agreed to rolling back the clock except Austria-Hungary, who has not logged on since i made the suggestion. I do not doubt it will agree, of course (A-H missed its build). I do not anticipate any problems in setting the game back to Autumn 1906 Unit-Placement.

gameID=13931: I missed two Autumn 1908 phases (Diplomacy and Retreats), in which you can see no one did anything surprising. There are only Germany, Russia and Turkey which I would need to agree to roll back the clock. So far, I am unsure what anyone is willing to do in the end, but I honestly believe that if you told them that turning back time to Autumn 1908 Diplomacy is not a problem, they would agree to do so.

gameID=12882: I missed Autumn 1908 Diplomacy. I haven't actually suggested turning back the clock in this game, but I would only expect resistance to come from Germany. Turkey is working with me, Italy missed its turn and England I know. The only thing wih this game is that it is very complicated, and moves may have been revealed in the South to Italy (I had my moves decided, but then again maybe so did Italy. Can you as a mod check messages between players?). I'll ask now and gauge reactions.

I have at least 1 days, 17 hours in gameID=13932 and gameID=13931 and have at least 2 days, 17 hours in gameID=12882 to wait. Thanks for your help.

By the way, in gameID=13931, if people don't agree, I would like to be removed "from those games in exchange for a share of the pot relative to the size of [my] share of SCs" in Spring 1908 Diplomacy. In gameID=12882, do not remove me. I will continue in any case.
JECE (1248 D)
24 Nov 09 UTC
Alright, EVERYONE IN gameID=13932 has agreed to turn back the time to Autumn 1906 Unit-Placement. That resolves one of the three games for you.

our game only need be moved back 1 turn (to the build phase)
JECE (1248 D)
24 Nov 09 UTC
That was the Austria-Hungary in gameID=13932, by the way. He meant one phase instead of a turn, by the way.
Nazim (493 D)
25 Nov 09 UTC
I'm Turkey in gameID=13931. I have a problem with turning back the clock because the move revealed my best laid plans to JECE, who would have an unfair advantage in this case. I describe it that way because in this particular game, JECE already has a considerable advantage, and the other player (including myself) really have their work cut out for them to keep the game competitive. While I have no problem with the advantage that JECE has legitimately accumulated, adding the foresight that the proposed rollback would give him makes the rollback objectionable.

I'm not without sympathy for JECE. He was winning the game, although it is disputable whether he would have actually won, but it sucks that he now is considering being removed from the game. I don't like the idea of forcing him to be taken out of the game at all. If the only other possible resolution is to roll back the clock, I say we take it back a few turns, so we're all at an equal disadvantage with respect to planning. Take it back to the diplomatic phase of Spring of 1907 or something. If that's at all possible.
JECE (1248 D)
25 Nov 09 UTC
I'll respond in gameID=13931's Global tab to Nazim's comment.

kestasjk: Do nothing in respect to gameID=12882. Germany has objected to a rollback and I don't think I can force him not to do so.
JECE (1248 D)
25 Nov 09 UTC
I meant 'convince him', not 'force him'.

JECE, any response to my suggestion that we roll the clock back a few turns, so as to spread the advantage of knowing each others' plans to all players?

kestasjk: How much agreement is needed to turn back the clock? Is it a majority of players? Do SC counts count for anything? Does every player need to give affirmation?
JECE (1248 D)
13 Dec 09 UTC
kestasjk: Please "remove [me] from [gameID=13931] in exchange for [120 D]". (I think '15 ⁄ 34 × 272 = 120' is the right calculation.) We had been discussing the situation for a long while with the game paused, but diplomacy has failed have not come to a unanimous agreement.

Done JECE, sorry for the problem and sorry you couldnt work it out. The next update, half done, will have much more thorough, well thought out rules to prevent people missing turns as a result of system problems

Wow, I need to be careful. I can't even click on all banners. Actually, though, I like it better that way. The game will still be recorded as one of mine.
