Who on this site is a debater? I am interested to see how many debaters are on here, because it seems like the skills are pretty similar. Please let me know (also high school, college, judge, etc) Just wondering, also what do you think about next years topics.

So I just got denied from my favorite college
I don't mean to rant...
It's just what bugs me the most is that they may have never looked past my transcript and found out what kind of person I was.

The Holidays!
Tell us how you're celebrating!
Lord Stark (100 D)

With all this negativity, I thought I'd create a thread for us to share the holiday spirit.

I'm spending Christmas at home with my parents and grandparents. I'm excited to see them.

I also plan on seeing The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnasus, which should be excellent.

Bump?
Don't tell me I'm the only one doing something for the holidays.

I'm taking off work at 3:30 on 12/18/09 (American dates) and won't return until 8:30 on 1/5/10. Two plus week's off and I have absolutely no specific plans, beyond going to my mother-in-laws on Christmas Day. I'm sure we'll go downtown to eat at Palomino's (I have a $50 gift card for them) and go ice skating on Fountain Square, maybe head to the Levy and check out a movie and take a carriage ride then eat at Brio's at least one day as well. Probably head to any local Christmas fairs and festivals to much on hot cocoa and cookies. We may even go out to The Beach Waterpark one day for their holiday festivities.

Going up to Lake Tahoe (California) for Christmas and then going to a New Years Party in SF with some freinds... going to be awesome

Haha sounds fun. I feel like I should recognize the names of some of these places, but they don't quite resonate with me...

Lord Stark are you in the UK because that moving is only coming out with limited release in the US and I'm not sure if I will be able to see it in my area

Lord Stark (100 D)

@Denis: What movie? If you're talking about the Song of Ice and Fire HBO series, it will be on American television sometime late next year. Incidentally, I am American. :)
Lake Tahoe sounds fun. Is that the one that borders like three or four states? If so, I've been there before, but it was like 7 years ago.

Oh! Well, Fandango says it's out on Christmas Day, and it hasn't failed me yet. Maybe I should check my local theater's site... I would be seriously bummed if it didn't play here.
Draugnar (0 DX)

Mine would only be recognizable to Greater Cincinnati folks. Downtown is Downtown Cincinnati, the center of which is Fountain Square (http://www.myfountainsquare.com/) and the Levy is Newport on the Levy, in Newport, KY (http://www.newportonthelevee.com/). Finally, The Beach Waterpark is a waterpark near Kings Island in Mason, OH (KI is one of the top parks in the country and home of the former and current record holding roller coasters). They theme the park and freeze the wave pool for ice skating every year during the holidays. KI used to do this, then stopped, then started again, but has stopped once again.

Sherlock Holmes opens Christmas Day. I intend to catch it the day after, unless my in-laws want to go catch it with me on Christmas Day.
Lord Stark (100 D)

Sounds like a lot of fun, Draugnar, hope you enjoy your vacation!
Acosmist (0 DX)

I put my foot down about seeing that movie on Christmas itself. I will brook no dissent.
Lord Stark (100 D)
12 Dec 09 UTC
Well, Denis, Fandango has no listed showtimes yet, but I've set it up for an email when there is a schedule. If it doesn't show here (there are three large theaters in town, including a "Regal Stadium 14"), there's a larger city not far away, and I'm willing to drive for an hour to see this movie, haha.
Draugnar (0 DX)
12 Dec 09 UTC
LOL, Acosmist +1!
Lord Stark (100 D)
12 Dec 09 UTC
Haha Draugnar, Sherlock Holmes is another one I'll probably end up seeing with the family that day (my younger brother works all morning/afternoon so we're not celebrating until the evening). Honestly, Robert Downey Jr. as Holmes + martial arts skills is a little.. odd, but it looks awesome nonetheless.
Draugnar (0 DX)
12 Dec 09 UTC
I expect to be disappointed in Sherlock Holmes for two reasons... First, it looks like the usual Hollywood action/adventure, which I enjoy, but which has no place in a cerebral character and period piece as Sherlock Holmes should be. Second, growing up with Jeremy Brett and having an appreciation for what Basil Rathbone did with the role, I just can't see Robert Downey, Jr. pulling of the air of intellect of the World's Greatest Detective. Doing the drugs? Sure. But being one of the greatest fictional minds of his or any time? Not likely. But then again, he did an outstanding job with Charlie Chaplin, so I'm giving him a chance.

But Jude Law as Dr. John Watson... That is an outstanding choice of casting. Inspired even.
Lord Stark (100 D)
12 Dec 09 UTC
I agree that it was a very strange casting choice... And you're right, it looks like more mindless Hollywood junk that won't do justice to the character. But, regardless, I expect to enjoy the movie.
Draugnar (0 DX)
12 Dec 09 UTC
I'm sure I'll enjoy it, but I'll just have to come home and put in one or two of the Jeremy Brett portrayals and remind myself that Mr. Holmes is NOT an action star.
Lord Stark (100 D)
12 Dec 09 UTC
Haha, yeah. And I agree about Law as well, love that guy.
Draugnar (0 DX)
12 Dec 09 UTC
My favorite Jude Law role was as the Gigolo robot in A.I. He is like Johnny Depp in that he can do anything and it will be perfect.
Lord Stark (100 D)
12 Dec 09 UTC
A.I. was awesome. I also really liked Alfie. (He seems to dig the womanizer roles...)
