Free Books!
Anyone who posts their choice (1, 2, or both) and thier email address will get 1. how nonviolence protect the state, by peter gelderloos or 2. collapse by jared diamond, in pdf form

Done it on this very forum before and nothing bad came of it. If kestas prefers I won't, be hey, what bad abut sharing ideas and knowledge?
TheGhostmaker (1545 D)
22 Oct 09 UTC
It is all very well sharing ideas, but you need people who come up with the ideas, and those people must earn a living like any other. As such, stealing the one thing they produce, their knowledge, is fundamentally wrong, not only as an infringement of the most basic of rights, the property right, but also on purely pragmatic grounds.
Acosmist (0 DX)

"also on purely pragmatic grounds"

this

please don't bring this site down :/
Jerkface (1626 D)

Relax, he's not even offering real books.
Sicarius (673 D)
22 Oct 09 UTC
Well I've met peter gelderloos I know he doesnt care. Jared diamond might, but hey, if he didnt want anyone to steal his ideas, he shouldnt have had such good ones.
lol stealing knowledge, thats like breathing someones elses air, pretty much impossible, and ultimately trivial.

if anybody wants them then you can email me personally.

Oh, it's just ideas? Not the author's expression of those ideas? Not his words? Then, sure, that's not copyrighted.
Acosmist (0 DX)
22 Oct 09 UTC
10 seconds on Amazon seems to confirm that both are real books; not sure what that comment was about.
Sicarius (673 D)
22 Oct 09 UTC
Ooooo you're right, distributing these books myself goes against my deep deep respect for copyright laws! what will I do with myself??? woe is me!!!!

if you dont want the books thats fine, but please dont preach to me.
Acosmist (0 DX)
22 Oct 09 UTC
Hey, consider the lives of other people for a second! Just a second! Using this site to distribute copyrighted material could have legal consequences for the HOSTS of this site, and, thus, on all of us. You get it? Did you think that more people than you might be affected by your actions?
Acosmist (0 DX)
22 Oct 09 UTC
I didn't know that anarchists were solipsists. :themoreyouknow:
Sicarius (673 D)
22 Oct 09 UTC
yes but the HOSTS of this site arnt posting copyrighted information on their site, and neither am I.

Also, if the worst thing that can possibly come of my actions is that an internet boardgame website gets shut down..... really? I mean hey, I like this site as much as anyone else here (except maybe edi birsan) but if I can get 5 people to read gelderloos' book then it was worth it.
Anyway its more likely that capital G God exists then this site getting shut down because I offered PDF copies of an anarchists 'copyrighted' book. so, not very.
Jerkface (1626 D)
22 Oct 09 UTC
They exist as real books but he is not offering real books. Were he offering real books then there would be no legal issue with his offering. And it would be very generous of him indeed to pay for the postage. My point is a minor one but I think books are different things from electronic books. And that difference is, in my opinion, under-appreciated.
Sicarius (673 D)
22 Oct 09 UTC
hey jerk, you can always print them out ya'know
Acosmist (0 DX)
22 Oct 09 UTC
"Also, if the worst thing that can possibly come of my actions is that an internet boardgame website gets shut down..... really? "

This is awesomely self-involved.
Acosmist (0 DX)
22 Oct 09 UTC
Is it part of anarchist ethics that you believe other people's enjoyment less important than spreading your message? Because that's what you said - it'd be worth getting this site shut down if you could get people to read that book. I just want to draw attention to the massive narcissism in that trade-off.
Sicarius (673 D)
22 Oct 09 UTC
Perhaps is my actions were more geared towards self interest. But my goal is the spread of information, and while the legality may be called into question, I am not doing it for myself at all. After all, I already have the books.

Also a factor, is the extreme unlikeliness of this site being shut down because of this, most notably because it has been done before, and not just by me. A member of this site sent me collapse after all.

If these guys don't mind then post a link to the site endorsed by them where this copyrighted material may be down loaded???
Until they endorse the free desimination of their material it is theft...
tailboarder (100 D)
22 Oct 09 UTC
I am not rying to do anything more than TGM. Educate everyone on copyright laws. I am only saying it is theft. If you can live with being a thief that's your choice. I don't care about your religious or political beliefs. Laws still exist. If you have a job I hope you don't get paid for your work either. That is how authors, artists, musicians, programmers etc. make a living. It is exactly the same thing.

Once again, if you don't want the books, fine.
but you're not insulting me, or educating me, or appealing to some vague sense of morality, so you might as well stop.

I've read Collapse; I wasn't as impressed with it as I was with Guns, Germs, and Steel. Diamond lays out a decent bit of history, but his arguments tying the past to current events are... a bit simplistic. As a cautionary tale of failing to consider the long term consequences it's excellent, as a "we're all gonna DIE!" case, it needs a bit of work

If you want to actually, y'know, buy this book, you can get a paperback for $8, or go here:
http://books.barnesandnoble.com/search/results.aspx?PST=B7&WRD=collapse+how+societies+choose+to+fail+or+succeed&box=collapse&pos=0

for the ebook.

Maybe not you but I am sure some of the younger people may not be aware of exactly what is taking place.
I can only imagine the kind of world we would have if no one produced anything and it really was ok to take what you want from anyone else...

Seriously how does an anarchist play a game based on cooperation with others and a clearly defined set of rules???
lulzworth (366 D)
23 Oct 09 UTC
@tailborder - To be fair, most anarchist literature envisions a society that is actually dependent on interpersonal cooperation, sometimes moreso than in current society. I don't think the political theory is particularly strong, however, you should give it credit for having some serious intellectual proponents.

grumbledook (569 D(S))
23 Oct 09 UTC
@ lulzworth - Correct. Political anarchism envisions a cooperative world that doesn't stamp out the individual at the same time. It's not advocating a Mad Max type world at all.

@ tailboarder - Diplomacy is a game based on cooperation??? : )
Sicarius (673 D)

Anti-theft devices are super easy. Oh speaking of that, I also have plans for a working emp "gun" if anyone wants those too. And I actually legally own that, who woulda thought?

ok lulzworth, check your email, you are now signed up for eleven terrorist listservs, a peta news feed, penis enlargement advertisments, and you actually won a contest too. just click here it says to claim your free laptop/iphone/PS3/20,000$

tailboarder yo're totally right. Anarchists dont beleive is cooperation or scial contracts at all, just bombs and fires and destruction and chaos and death. Also I am only 13 and use my dads work computer to get on here. oh wait no, I'm 30 nd balding and in my mom basement, take your pick.

Sicarius, as an electrical engineer, and especially knowing your posting history on this site, I seriously question your ability to devise an EMP gun, or any electronic device more complicated than a closed loop of wire.
stratagos (3269 D(S))
23 Oct 09 UTC
ednos, he's doubtlessly not the person who wrote the schematics for the EMP device - you can find them *all* over the internet.

and they're doubtlessly just as effective as anything else you find randomly on the internet
stratagos (3269 D(S))
23 Oct 09 UTC
hell, you can find videos on youtube. You'll note that they basically lay some crappy toy right on top of the "EMP" to be fried.
