Can an unsupported navy unit convoy when it has been atatcked by another unit?
http://www.phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=11227

Check out the English Channel move... I would not have thought this was allowable as the naval units 'activity' for the round is defending the ENG, rather than defending AND convoying. Can a moderator cvheck this out please?

Colorblind issue
I am red-green colorblind and I know this is mentioned in the FAQs, but are there any plans to change or give the option to create different color maps and press?
pootercannon (326 D)
29 May 09 UTC
I am playing in a public press game and the text from Austria, Italy, and Germany all look the same color to me and sometimes it's difficult for me to figure out who's saying what.

Also, on the map, Germany and Austria look really similar AND I can only tell where England is by the black border around the country - I have no idea what color it is supposed to be. It looks to be the same as the ocean.
TheGhostmaker (1545 D)

Figlesquidge is working on a map which I understand will have this.

As for your predicament in the public press game, I'm sure if you let them know they would add [Germany] or [Italy] or [Austria] before their messages.
LOL Pooter. I have never played Public Press for precisely the same reason. Even in regular games, I have to ask my wife who said what.
As for what Ghostmaker said, I have suggested that the programmers of this site do that in the global tab. Seems an easy thing to do. Alas, to no avail.
pootercannon (326 D)
29 May 09 UTC
It's not a huge deal in my current game - largely because I am almost dead. But it really helped make the issue more evident.
LOL, I never noticed that (to me) England and the ocean are the same color. Since i know where England should be, it was never an issue.
For what it's worth (not much, heh), I don't have any color vision issues and I still get Aus/Ger mixed up... and not that it helps you, but England is pink, Germany is brown, and Austria is... "rust" I guess you'd call it. Although the player-name and press tab for Austria is clearly red (it doesn't match the map color).
pootercannon (326 D)
29 May 09 UTC
When I first started playing the game (look at my profile -- my first game here was my first game ever), it took me a long time to figure out where England was and what the boundaries were.
You realize that England isn't an imaginary country, right?
pootercannon (326 D)
29 May 09 UTC
Right - like I said, first time playing ever. Didn't even know the game was going to be a map of Europe.

I totally agree that it would be very nice if the 7 colors were more different from each other. I suppose close colors could be made different if one was very clear and the other very dark... Just a suggestion

There is an add-on for Firefox for color-blindness people.

I'm with you all... Red-Green-Blue color blindness makes E&F text look nearly identical, I&T very similar, and A&G so identical I can never tell them apart in the public forums (and R is very close to A&G to me)
pootercannon (326 D)
29 May 09 UTC
Wow Draugnar. Russia's text stands out like a beacon to me. Turkey is sometimes too light to read very well, but I can tell them apart from everyone else. You must have color-blindness worse than me. That's pretty impressive. And sad.
Chrispminis (916 D)
30 May 09 UTC
Well it's not so sad. Colour-blindness is not a mutant trait because it carries a small advantage that is reflected in it's proportional allele frequency in the population. It's becoming more of a disadvantage because us non-colour blind people often forget about you and design things without this in mind, but you do have a natural advantage in spotting certain things that non-colour blind people would miss because we're too focused on the colours.

I do believe that figlesquidge is working on a map in which you can change the colours of the country to suit your own personal preference.

I believe this is the add-on that Lucas is referring to, but it will only work on an older version of Firefox at the moment. Hopefully they'll update it.

Yeah, pooter. Beige, tan, brown, and green all look the same (maybe a "shade" differenc but the same base to me). also Red, orange, and yellow are just light and dark version of the same color, and purple, some pinks, and blue are very similar. Dark red is black to me and the brighter the red gets, the more orange. I have nearly no red vision, and severly diminished green such that the tests that show one number for normal, and another for most color blind people, rarely show any number to me.
Draugnar (0 DX)

What really gets me is bright green and yellow on the computer. They are 100% identical to my eyes yet everyone says they are totally different colors. Same with light blue and cyan.

Wow. When there is a rainbow, all I see is a yellow band in the sky. What do you see?
It took years for me to explain to people what it is I actually see. You always get the dumb questions 'What color are my bluejeans?' But the best way to explain it I've found...

When you look at a beautiful sunset and see 50 shades of color? I see 3.
When you look at the fall leaves changing color and see 50 shades of green, red, orange and yellow? I see 3.

Its not that I can't see red sometimes or green sometimes, depending on shades, its that they all blend in together.
Draugnar (0 DX)

DJ just described it as well as it can be. Rainbows are mostly yellow to me with some change near the edge such that the blue of the sky gets a little blurred with the yellow. I have done a little playing with rainbow photos I took in digital form and managed to convert them to B&W or Sepia tones so that I could see the bands in the rainbow before.

Do you guys hate green screen and blue screen effects as much as I do because they look so fake, no matter what other people say about them seeming so real?
Draugnar (0 DX)
30 May 09 UTC
I watched Cloverfield last night and, while I enjoyed the movie, things like the head of the statue of Liberty stood out as being a digital addition using green screen.
Chrispminis (916 D)
30 May 09 UTC
Wow, really? That's so cool. I don't notice those things at all, but it's because I'm more accustomed to identifying objects by colour more, and contrast less.

I can imagine it must be difficult to describe what you see. It's not even for certain that individuals see the same colours, and I expect there is some natural variation even amongst non-colour blind people. It all depends on what is most useful for discerning objects. I could never explain the colour orange to someone, I have to rely on common experience. The best way I can understand how colour-blindness works is by looking at pictures that are supposed to look the same for colour blind people but look very different to me.
OMGNSO (415 D)

I wonder if there are picture that work the other way so colour blind people could distuinguish them while non colour blind people can't? Perhaps such a thing could be based around the green screen effects Draugnar described.
Yes, there are. The regular colorblindness tests, the 'normal' will see one number, and the colorblind will see another.
There are a host of them available online.

Also I wonder if there is correlation between colour blind and skill at diplomacy: maybe something to do with learning not to trust what you see?

The interesting thing about these tests is that they show one thing for normal, another for the typical colorblindness, and then those of us with achromatacy (spelling?) don't see anything at all. I fall in the later category.

RE: Late-game betrayal
I wanted the opinion of more experienced players about my betraying Germany in this game http://www.phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=9966, was I wrong to betray him for the win or was it his fault for leaving himself exposed to an attack from me?

How (exactly) does the '/draw' voting work?
Do draw votes expire? (I assume not)
When exactly are they processed with respect to ending the game? (The message appears immediately, but does that mean that the last vote to draw ends the game immediately? Or at end of the next turn? end of the next build phase?)

guide to special cases
Is there a nice guide to special cases and examples of this and that country configuration and set of orders somewhere? I read the manual at diplom.org and it didn't resolve it.

My question is if A1 supports A2 into B, but B attacks A1 and A2 is also dislodged, does A2 go into B?

Support question
Probably a real n00b question, but it has been years since I played Dip regularly. Can one country support-hold another country that is itself executing a support action, or does support-hold only apply to a country that is truly holding?
