Why should you know who has finalized orders?
Would things be smoother if you did not know?
Ukla (390 D)

I don't think it really matters, Edi.
In rare games someone is trying deliberately to slow matters down, and that might make everyone else gang up on them and try to wipe them out, but overall, I don't think it really matters.
What's the difference if you can see who has finalized and who hasn't? As long as everyone hasn't, then anyone can log in and change their orders, anyway. So, it doesn't really make a difference from a diplomatic standpoint. If your ally has finalized, then you just don't and wait for them to read your latest message...
In fact, knowing who has and hasn't finalized might actually speed the game up. If you don't know who has, then you might be tempted to not ever finalize your moves so that your allies/friends/potential stabees have a chance to read what you wrote to them. Know what I mean?

I think it's kind of interesting to see who's finalized and who hasn't... to me it'd be a bit like if you see that someone else seems to have finished writing their orders (i.e., is holding a sheet with a fair bit of writing on it) in face to face play.

Obviously, it doesn't mean a thing since they might possibly switch the orders later on... just like how in phpDiplomacy you can un-finalize, switch your orders, and re-finalize.

I've just admitted that it does not matter whether someone seems to have finalized or not-- but that does not mean it isn't interesting to see. So I like to see it, all other things largely being equal.

I think the reason is so you can know if you're the one holding things up, you feel more pressured to finalize, and if everyone knows who is the one who isn't finalizing they can pressure them into doing so. Not sure how effective it is at this goal though, but I tihnk more information is better

Interesting point Edi. I considered it vaguely before, but I generally came to the conclusion that it doesn't matter much and that it's really just a tool to make finalizing and ending a phase early easier. Do you have reason to believe that it would be better if that were not the case?
TheGhostmaker (1545 D)

I know I tend to finalise if everyone else has.

if someone proposes a plan to you, especially early on in spring 01, and finalizes before you answered him, you can be fairly certain that this person cares little wether or not you agree - in other words, is out to stab you.

Newbies often do that mistake, it is annoying
Pandarsenic (1485 D)

Akroma, that's their problem and their opponent's gain, though. I'm fine if they give me warning about stabbing me.

If someone finalises before speaking to you, you know they are playing gunboat by themselves: hence kill them.
Biddis (364 D)

Akroma - very true, also if two countries finalise at exact time, they are often working as allies.

I think the finalising aspect is really interesting and adds another dimension to the game, just as logging in times, it all helps piece info together.
iMurk789 (100 D)

yea, i dont think you should be allowed to know who has finalized and who hasnt.

I think it preserves an element of face to face play: in FTF, you can always see when everyone else goes to write their orders (and finishes). It is a big tip off if somebody negotiates a plan with you and then doesn't change their orders. That's what seeing the finalizes does.
iMurk789 (100 D)
26 May 09 UTC
when we play FTF usually someone writes their orders after everyone has negotiated, and if not, they do it when no one notices them. i personally think it wrecks that aspect of FTF play.

I always follow who's finalized in the beginning few years - that way you can (if barely) predicting trends, like alliances and such. For example, an Italy and Russia who put their orders in much earlier than anyone else puts up some suspiscions.
On the other hand, there is also that other strategy that seems to (somewhat unforutunately) happen every time I take too long to fill in orders - I think some people choose to delay filling in their orders if others haven't filled theirs in yet. This actually happened to be the case in a few games that I was in, and in the middle game where any phase missed is deadly, it's actually a mindgame that could work out.
Am I being cheap?
Centurian (3257 D)

It just speeds the game up for me. I rarely finalise unless I'm small or its in the very late game. But if everyone else has, I will to see the result.

Cheap 'Victory'
What's with the people who deliberately delay or refuse to pause when everyone else has, then playing on solo to get a 'win' after everyone else has given up out of frustration at the deliberate delays?

Hey guy's let's let Thucydides get on with his paper
It's interesting that people have such opinions about those who agree/ disagree with them. As I'm not one to get too bent out of shape with those who disagree I'd like to continue the debate about Collins', Dawkins, etc. here.

Thanks
Don't really want to make a big thread out of this, but just to say thank you to those in my gunboat game, Flashman in particular, for the game. My internet went (still not quite sure why) some time ago, and as you saw it caused me to effectively disappear. Very sorry for those who lost good positions, and perhaps I can offer you another game sometime coming up.
Yours,
Figlesquidge
