Why should you know who has finalized orders?
Would things be smoother if you did not know?

Cheap 'Victory'
What's with the people who deliberately delay or refuse to pause when everyone else has, then playing on solo to get a 'win' after everyone else has given up out of frustration at the deliberate delays?
Razz (144 D)

I haven't played here in awhile .. a year or two, really. Since I returned the last couple days, I've joined several supposed 'live' games. Several of them have ended up with one player suffering a setback and then deliberately bringing the game to a halt by not finalising their orders and dragging things out for 2 (or more) hour long turns.

Other times, when everyone has agreed to a pause, 1 player will refuse to enter the order. It seems that some players are using these tactics to get everyone else to quit the game so they can then go on and score a 'victory' and get a bunch of points.

Yeah, I know .. "don't play with those people" or "only play in high point games" .. but that's really beside the point.

I'm just at a loss to understand the mindset of these people. Is there really any satisfaction in getting a 'win' that way?

And why has that type of player seemingly become so common here? When did the Dip community degrade to ... this?

They're point-tards. I don't catch a lot of them because I'm tend to play higher-stakes WTA. :| I know, not helping.

The last player I saw who refused to pause in one of my games was Tarablus.

He's banned now.

He flooded the forum because he was a dumbass.

That is a danger especially with live games. I'm sorry to hear your experience because I've never had anything like that happen to me.

Is there any technical reason why the lowest turn setting is 1 hour? it'd make live games feasible (and discourage the bullshit) if it was possible to set a 15-20 minute turn.

I played a live game for the first time. Razz was involved too. I think the idea of 15-20 minute moves is fantastic. One hour moves is actually too long to play in a single sitting or more is too long to sit at a computer. But with 15-20 minute moves it is actually possible to finish a game in a few hours.
In the game I played with Razz we all agreed in advance to finalize our moves within 15 minutes. This worked well for a little while but then three players dropped out, which meant we were forced to wait the minimum hour per turn until they went CD. If we had been able to set 15 minute turns then these players would have gone into CD faster and we wouldn't have had this problem.
I would love to see this option introduced at phpdiplomacy.

Thanks .. when it was fun, it was fun. Shame a few selfish jerks had to ruin things.
Maybe we'll meet again when/if kestas adjusts the minimum time.
Til then .. keep your knives sharp, and your eyes open.

(LIVE) Winner fights Lyoto Machida Autumn 1908

This is the game I am asking about. I had a lot of points I was about to win when this game ended and I would like it invesitgated. I agree with Raxx that we had problems in 3 games this weekend with these poinsters and mean-spirited people who decided not to pause or draw when everyone else wanted to.
Razz (144 D)
25 May 09 UTC
Ter, after you left, Turkey unpaused and finalised moves. Even after the next turn, he refused to pause, voted for a draw, and then logged off. I suppose I could have gone on and won, but going along with the draw at that point was the least of a lot of bad options.

THat is unacceptable. I have enjoyed playing these weekend marathons and learned a hell of a lot, but twice now the game has been stolen due to a technical glitch. I want to call for a Mod to investigate, what do I do?
Chrispminis (916 D)

I think the best way to deal with this is to create a game with longer phase lengths, say 24 hours, and agree to finalize within 15 minutes. Then when people start dropping off the game is only ruined in that it's not live anymore, but you won't have to worry about someone simply outlasting you for points as these unsportsmanlike players have done.

As a moderator, I cannot really punish them for what they've done, but feel free to name and shame and bring a community witch hunt on them. =)

yeah that makes a lot of sense, i'd be really willing to play a live game but haven't yet because due to time zones etc i wouldn't wanna loose suddenyl cos it'd gettin too late, doing 24hr phases and then just agreeing to do 15min turns makes a lot more sense as the games wnt be able to get messed up as easily, it might just turn into a normal length game eventually
Biddis (364 D)

on that point if anyone wants to play a live game (24hr swetting but 15min turns) i'd be up for it :)

Crazyter - you asked before how to contact a mod, please read the threads you start!

Yes, I would recommend you just set very long phases then all finalize. The other issue is that unfortunately to avoid this the best is to play with people you know, as with all honour rules games.

Let's try out a live game with 20 minute turns. I was thinking 15 but added 5 to account for all the typing. Either or let's play a fast game ^_^

Hey guy's let's let Thucydides get on with his paper
It's interesting that people have such opinions about those who agree/ disagree with them. As I'm not one to get too bent out of shape with those who disagree I'd like to continue the debate about Collins', Dawkins, etc. here.

Thanks
Don't really want to make a big thread out of this, but just to say thank you to those in my gunboat game, Flashman in particular, for the game. My internet went (still not quite sure why) some time ago, and as you saw it caused me to effectively disappear. Very sorry for those who lost good positions, and perhaps I can offer you another game sometime coming up.
Yours,
Figlesquidge
