How long do I need to stay in a center for it to be mine? See Belgium and Denmark...Are these truly the right color?

anyone interested?

me and some friends have been playing private games, but we only have 5 players, so 2 countries are always CD. if anybody would be interested in playing some casual games with low points and doesnt mind that fact that some of the other players know each other, post a message.

hello everyone i just posted a thread on this not to long ago, maybe you remember- im creating a private game, WTA, 5 points to join. me and some of my friends have been playing a lot of private games, but were sick of having CD countries so we will welcome anyone to join.

Country Assignments

Is there an algorhythm for deciding which player gets which country assigned to him? Is it just random? Can a player specify his preferences for countries?

Irony

I am American (Minnesota), born and bred. A while ago I had a college professor (he was from Scotland) tell the class that he was going to skip the section on Irony in our Introduction to Shakespeare class because every American has a "pure and internal understanding of the word" and there was nothing he could teach us about it that we didn't already truly understand.

What would we need to make this forum perfect?

In my view:

Ability to Edit posts.
When making a new post, there could be two boxes, one for the first bit of the post, and then the second for the first reply.
(Off-topic, Mod-contact and on-topic categories)
Mod powers: Lock/Sticky/delete.
Pagination rather than falling off the bottom.
Some additional features with post editing:
--Links possible
--Possibility of adding tables
--Bold/Italic/Underline possible
--Some way of making it possible to align text- at present extra spaces are ignored.
I also like the "donor" icon idea.

I dislike the idea of editing posts. Normally I am in favor, but on this forum, I like the idea of a permanent record.

I like the idea of editing for two reasons:

1. Sometimes you post something and just aren't clear about it
2. Editing for the English in the post.

I dislike it for 2 reason:
1) If a post isn't received well, the OP can delete it, and then all the followup posts slamming it make no sense.
2) If someone wants to go back and doctor evidence (i.e. 'I never said that'), its easy to do.

Most message boards I've been on have the capability to restrict edit capabilities based on which sub-forum it is. So if a post gets moved to the flamewar sub-forum then no one can go back and edit posts in that thread, just add new posts to the end.

The quote feature is also really handy. And effectively keeps people from being able to go back and edit their posts because you've already quoted what they originally said.

I think given the use in games that these forums has (wich should be the most important use) it wouldn't be wise to allow for edits.

I'd prefer a forum more like 99.9% of all the other sites in the world use. phpBB isn't bad, it's free, it's easy to set up and admin (I run several of them).

I don't want edits. I think a permanent record is more appropriate. Perhaps the option to append a post with a note that could act as an edit while leaving the original intact?

I think it would be great if we had pagination and could access older topics.

yeah the only thing that i would add is an archive of the old things.

but this forum is really *quite* clean compared to most... all the extra boxes and smileys and tabs and garbage clogging everything. this is simple, and nice.

Yes but would it be that big of a deal to have two parallel Forums, one simply labeled "Forum A" and one labeled "Forum B"? "A" Forum is Diplomacy, "B" Forum is not. It's that simple.

Having categories in a forum for
1. Player introductions
2. Games in progress
3. Diplomacy Strategy/Tactics/General talk
4. Non Diplomacy topics

Seems like a natural thing. There is a forum on playDiplomacy that does this rather successfully.

I have no idea of the code issues, but it would seem that having just a forum button that then takes you to a whole different code base, is not an illogical thing, but as I said, I am not a code person.
