How long do I need to stay in a center for it to be mine? See Belgium and Denmark...Are these truly the right color?

Irony
I am American (Minnesota), born and bred. A while ago I had a college professor (he was from Scotland) tell the class that he was going to skip the section on Irony in our Introduction to Shakespeare class because every American has a "pure and internal understanding of the word" and there was nothing he could teach us about it that we didn't already truly understand.
pootercannon (326 D)
20 May 09 UTC

It was not in my nature as a student to raise my hand in class, and I never asked him what he meant - but I never forgot it. This forum has a large European base, so I pose the question to the rest of you for discussion. What do you THINK he meant?
jbalcorn (429 D)
20 May 09 UTC
Wow. That would be ironic if it weren't so screwed up. :-)
ag7433 (927 D(S))
20 May 09 UTC

Maybe because as an American it is very ironic that the leader in capitalism is buying up banks, ordering CEO's to be terminated, and allowing car companies to fail, while starting to buy up failing media companies. Ironic that the free speech and independent media is so heavily influenced by government. .

But your class was probably before today.
Jerkface (1626 D)
20 May 09 UTC
He was probably just lazy.
trim101 (363 D)

he was being ironic pooter a common thought in europe is that americans on average dont get irony
pootercannon (326 D)
20 May 09 UTC
Yeah ag, the class was almost 10 years ago.
Darwyn (1601 D)
20 May 09 UTC
trim...if that's the case, it sounds like the prof was being sarcastic.
jbalcorn (429 D)
20 May 09 UTC
If we had a pure and internal understanding of the word....

We wouldn't be debating it! :-)
saulberardo (2111 D)
20 May 09 UTC
he was just giving a real example of irony in the hope it could be enough to make you understand that section...
cgwhite32 (1465 D)
20 May 09 UTC
That's a great example of irony, laced with sarcasm. I like this professor!

Did no-one get it at the time?

what about canadians and their views on irony
(alanis morissette anyone?)
Onar (131 D)
21 May 09 UTC
You mean a song titled "Ironic" (Or something similar), that was in fact, not ironic in the slightest?
Friendly Sword (636 D)
21 May 09 UTC
"what about canadians and their views on irony"

No!! That song is not in any way reflective of Canadians, any more than Hanna Montana drivel is reflective of America.

Irony is not ironic.
Onar (131 D)
21 May 09 UTC
I thought the song and viewpoint was something to be proud of, though.
Poseidon (121 D)
21 May 09 UTC
I really like this post. Isn't it great how you can be so ironic and sarcastic when talking about irony?!
Chrispminis (916 D)
21 May 09 UTC
Friendly Sword, you missed the ultimate irony of the song. Onar's got it down.
Friendly Sword (636 D)
21 May 09 UTC
Ah... it may still annoy me, but tis true Onar and Chrispminis. I suppose it works.

Of course, with that reasoning, near anything can be justified, whether its depth of meaning was intentional or not. ;)

In my experience, British people and Australian's often say that American's don't understand irony. I am not sure if I agree. Some of my favourite comics are American and definitely have fantastic grasp of irony. Bill Hicks for one, and then of course TV shows like Seinfelf and South Park.
Given the hyperbole of his statement, "every American has a "pure and internal understanding of the word"", he was certainly being ironic.
pootercannon (326 D)
21 May 09 UTC
But ... What if he wasn't being sarcastic and/or ironic? If he was being straight up, would there be something about Americans that could lead him to think and say what he did?
jbalcorn (429 D)
21 May 09 UTC
The hyperbole makes it clear that he was being ironic. If he had said "Americans tend to understand and appreciate irony" that would definitely have muddied the waters.

Oh, and also, you have to say that quote with a really thick Scottish accent.
Submariner (111 D)
21 May 09 UTC
pooter... as it's taken you 10 years to ask anyone what it means, the self evidential irony is total.
Submariner (111 D)
21 May 09 UTC
If anyone British (or European) had been sat in that lecture hall when he said it, they would have been pissing themselves laughing. I'm chortling now! What a sarcastic bastard he was :)
jbalcorn (429 D)
21 May 09 UTC
And the Scottish accent makes it all the better.

"Oh, you Americans have a PURE and TOTAL grasp of irony, do ye? Well, it's CRRAP!".
pootercannon (326 D)
21 May 09 UTC
Haha. Well, there were only about 20 of us in the class and, really, none of us got it.
